Hidden Truth
Hidden Truth
"Little brothers?" Aidan whispered, his voice shaking.
The scarred man called Alex smiled wider. "Surprised to see me alive?"
Before anyone could move, the lights went out completely. In the sudden darkness, a loud bang echoed through the room. Someone grabbed Aidan's arm.
"Run!" Elijah's voice hissed in his ear.
The emergency lights flickered on, casting everything in an eerie red glow. Aidan saw Asher being pulled toward the door by Maya, who had appeared from nowhere, blood trickling from a cut on her forehead.
"This way!" she shouted over the blaring alarms.
Victor was on the floor, holding his shoulder where blood seeped through his expensive suit. Alex was nowhere to be seen.
They ran through the maze of hallways, dodging confused employees. Maya led them to a service elevator that most people didn't know existed.
"How did you get free?" Asher asked Maya as the elevator dropped rapidly to the parking garage.
"I was never really caught," she said, wiping blood from her face. "It was part of the plan. Victor's too smart to let his guard down unless he thinks he's winning."
The elevator doors opened to reveal Elijah's sleek black car waiting with the engine running.
"Get in!" Elijah shouted, already behind the wheel.
They piled in and sped away from Carter Tower, tires squealing. No one spoke until they were miles away, lost in the tangle of city streets.
"Alex is alive," Aidan finally said, breaking the heavy silence. "How is that possible? Dad told us he died when we were babies."
"Your father has been lying to you your entire lives," Elijah said, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "There's something you need to see. Both of you."
Twenty minutes later, they pulled up to an old brick building in a quiet part of town that the twins had never visited. It wasn't poor, but it wasn't rich either – just normal people living normal lives, far from the glass towers and marble lobbies of the Carter world.
"This is where you live?" Asher asked as Elijah led them through a small lobby to an elevator.
Elijah nodded. "Home sweet home. Not quite Carter Tower, but it serves its purpose."
The elevator creaked its way to the sixth floor. Elijah paused outside a door marked 612, then took a deep breath.
"What I'm about to show you... it might change everything." He looked at each of them with serious eyes. "Are you ready for that?"
The twins glanced at each other, then nodded together.
Elijah unlocked the door and let them in. Maya followed, closing the door behind them and checking the locks twice.
The apartment was neat but simple. No fancy furniture or expensive art like the twins were used to. But what caught their attention immediately was the wall across from the entrance.
It was covered with photos, newspaper clippings, and sticky notes all connected by red string – like something from a detective movie.
"What is this?" Aidan asked, moving closer.
The central photo showed a beautiful woman with dark hair and a bright smile. Both twins froze.
"Mom," Asher whispered.
Around their mother's photo were pictures of Victor, the twins as children, and company documents. One photo showed a much younger Victor with his arm around their mother and a third person whose face had been cut out.
"I've been tracking your family for years," Elijah said quietly. "Ever since I learned what happened to Catherine Carter."
"What do you mean, what happened to her?" Aidan demanded. "She died in an accident."
Elijah shook his head slowly. "No. She was murdered."
The twins stared at him in shock.
"By who?" Asher finally managed to ask.
"That's what I've been trying to discover," Elijah replied. "But I'm almost certain Victor was involved."
"Our father killed our mother?" Aidan couldn't believe what he was hearing. "That's insane."
"Is it?" Maya asked softly. "Think about the man you know. What wouldn't he do to protect his power?"
Asher had moved to another section of the wall. His hands trembled as he pointed to a photo. "Who is this?"
The picture showed their mother sitting on a park bench. Next to her was a boy about ten years old with familiar features – a face that looked like a younger version of their own.
"That's Alex," Elijah confirmed. "Your older brother."
"We never had an older brother," Aidan insisted, but his voice lacked conviction.
"You did," Elijah said. "Victor sent him away when he was eleven. Told everyone he died in an accident. Your mother was heartbroken, but Victor threatened her to keep quiet."
"How do you know all this?" Aidan demanded.
Elijah hesitated, then walked to a bookshelf. He pulled out an old leather journal and handed it to the twins.
"This belonged to your mother," he said. "Read page 42."
With shaking hands, Asher opened the journal to the marked page:
"Victor sent my firstborn away today. Claims it's for special education, but I know the truth. Alex asked too many questions about the company. V says if I tell the twins, he'll make sure I never see any of my children again. I've hidden the proof at the summer house, behind the mirrors where he never looks. If anything happens to me, E will know what to do."
"E?" Aidan looked up. "Who's E?"
Elijah turned to a small box on his coffee table. He opened it and took out a faded photograph of two women smiling together. One was clearly their mother. The other...
"That's my mother," Elijah said softly. "Elena Hart. Your mother's best friend and personal assistant for fifteen years."
The twins stared at the photo, then at Elijah. The resemblance to the woman in the picture was unmistakable.
"Our mothers were friends?" Asher asked, struggling to process this new information.
"More than friends," Elijah said. "They were like sisters. When your mother suspected Victor might harm her, she gave my mother instructions. If anything happened to her, my mother was supposed to help her children discover the truth when they were old enough."
"But your mother didn't," Aidan pointed out.
Elijah's face darkened. "She tried. Three months after your mother's 'accident,' my mother also died under suspicious circumstances. Car failure – just like Catherine."
Silence filled the apartment as the twins tried to make sense of everything.
"So you're not..." Asher began.
"I'm not your half-brother, if that's what you're thinking," Elijah said. "That was never true. I'm the son of your mother's best friend, fulfilling a promise my mother made but couldn't keep."
Aidan walked back to the wall of photos, studying each one carefully. "If Alex is alive, and he was working with our father earlier today, why did he shoot him?"
"I don't think he was working with Victor," Maya said. "I think Alex has his own agenda."
Elijah nodded. "Alex returned to New Haven six months ago. I've been tracking him, but he's smart. Always one step ahead."
"Wait," Asher said suddenly, pointing to a small photo in the corner of Elijah's investigation wall. "Who's that?"
The photo showed a young woman with features that looked strikingly familiar.
"That," Elijah said quietly, "is the biggest secret of all. Your sister."
"We don't have a sister," both twins said in unison.
"Catherine was pregnant when she died," Elijah explained. "Victor covered it up, but the baby survived. She was adopted by a family in Europe."
"How do you know this?" Aidan asked, his world spinning.
"Because she found me," Elijah replied. "She's been helping me put the pieces together. And she's the reason we need to get to the summer house right away."
"Why?" Asher asked.
"Because she's already there," Elijah said grimly. "And so is Alex."
A loud bang on the door made everyone jump.
"Police! Open up!"
The twins looked at Elijah in panic.
"It's not the police," Maya whispered. "Victor's people."
Elijah moved quickly to a bookshelf, pulling it aside to reveal a hidden door. "This way. There's a fire escape that leads to the back alley."
As they slipped through the secret exit, Aidan glanced back at the wall of photos one last time. His eyes landed on a small note attached to his mother's picture, written in neat handwriting:
"The truth lies in the reflection of those you trust the least."
The door burst open behind them just as they disappeared into the darkness.
