Chapter 21
As Liv cried in Seth's arms, her mind was racing. She had to see it for herself, had to know the full extent of the damage.
Pulling back, she wiped her eyes and stood on shaky legs. "I need to go there," she said, voice trembling.
Seth rose and steadied her. "I'll drive you. But Liv, are you sure that's a good idea in your state?" Worry was etched on his face.
"I have to, Seth. I just...I have to see it with my own eyes," she replied, determination starting to overtake her grief.
The drive over was a blur. When the shop came into view, Liv let out an agonized sob at the sight before her. Flames still licked at the rubble, smoke billowing into the night sky.
Her legs gave out but Seth caught her, holding her tight as she stared in disbelief. All those memories, gone in an instant. The crowd of onlookers fell silent at her anguish.
"It's really gone," she wept, clutching Seth like a lifeline. He had no words to console her, just letting her cry as the reality fully sank in. All they could do now was pick up the pieces.
Just then, through the haze of smoke and tears, Liv heard a familiar voice calling her name. She turned to see Scarlet pushing through the crowd, face streaked with soot and tears.
"Liv! Oh god, it's really all gone," Scarlet cried, stumbling towards her friend. Liv caught her in a tight embrace as they sobbed together.
Seth's heart broke seeing the two women in such anguish. He rubbed their backs gently, at a loss for how to comfort them. All he could offer were quiet reassurances that he was there to help however needed.
After several minutes, Liv and Scarlet's tears began to slow. They pulled apart, each grasping the other's hands for support.
"At least we still have each other," Liv said softly. Scarlet nodded, mustering a watery smile. "We'll get through this together, like always."
With Scarlet's support, Liv took a steadying breath and pulled out her phone with shaking hands. She needed to call the one person who had been there for her through everything - her mother Jane.
The phone rang a few times before a cheerful "Hello darling!" came through. But then Jane must have heard the strain in Liv's voice as she said "Mom...there's been an accident. The bookshop is gone, it burned down."
Silence on the other end, then a soft gasp as Jane processed the news. "Oh my girl...are you alright? Are you hurt?" Concern colored her tone.
Liv shook her head even though her mother couldn't see. "No, I'm physically fine. Just..." Her voice cracked as fresh tears came. "It's all gone, everything we built together."
"I know, I know. But you're safe, and that's what matters," Jane soothed. "Listen, your father and I are getting in the car now. We'll be there as soon as we can to help you through this."
Liv let out a sob of gratitude. Having her parents' love and support was the light she needed most right now. "Thank you Mom. Drive safely, I'll see you soon."
When Jane and Mark arrived at the smoldering ruins, Liv broke down in tears again seeing their familiar car pull up. She rushed into their waiting arms, letting all the grief and fear of the past hours pour out as they held her tight.
"There, there, let it all out darling," Jane soothed, stroking Liv's hair. Jane rubbed her back gently. "We've got you, sweetheart. You're not alone in this."
After a few moments, Liv's sobs subsided and she pulled back, wiping her eyes. "I'm so glad you're both here." She looked to where Seth and Scarlet stood respectfully at a distance.
Seth stepped forward to shake their hands. "Its a pleasure to see you both again.."
Jane smiled warmly. "Any friend of our Liv's is family. Thank you for being here for her." Her kind words meant the world.
A few days had passed since the fire, but Liv and Scarlet were no closer to answers on how to rebuild. They sat together in Liv's living room, brooding over financial reports as rain pattered against the windows.
"With insurance and our savings, we'll only have enough to cover the costs of clearing the site," Liv sighed. "After that, I'm not sure where to turn for construction funds."
Scarlet worried her lip, deep in thought. "Have you looked into any small business loans? Or reaching out to local donors who supported the shop?"
"I've made some calls but it's a long shot." Liv rubbed her tired eyes. "Banks want collateral we don't have. And donations won't cover a full rebuild."
Just then, Seth poked his head in. "How are you holding up?" He carried in a tray laden with tea and snacks.
"Still spinning our wheels, unfortunately," Liv said glumly as Seth set the tray down. He peered at their papers.
"May I take a look? A fresh set of eyes could help." Liv handed them over gratefully as Seth scanned the figures.
The mood had lifted in Liv's living room since Seth shared his rebuilding plan. But the financial realities still weighed heavy.
"Even with donations, it'll be tight making ends meet until the shop is up and running again," Liv mused worriedly.
Scarlet nodded. "We may need to consider temporary jobs to tide us over."
Seth froze, eyes widening at the thought. As Liv's husband, he prided himself on providing for her needs. The idea of her working sent a pang through him.
But he bit his tongue, knowing this wasn't about his pride. Liv and Scarlet had lost their livelihood - of course they'd do what they must.
"If...if you think that's best," he replied carefully. Liv smiled and squeezed his hand.
"It would just be for a little while. And we'd still be working towards our dream in the meantime."
Seth forced a smile, pushing down the small twinge of inadequacy. This was about supporting Liv, not his ego.
"Then I'll help in any way I can. Let me ask around - maybe I can find you both something temporary and flexible."
Seth pondered how he could help Liv and Scarlet financially, while keeping his involvement anonymous. His pride didn't want Liv thinking he couldn't provide.
