Chapter 103 The truth
Chapter 103 The truth
IT FELT LIKE something stabbed her chest after Amber said that. The words ‘our child’ kept echoing in her head.
She clutched her chest. It hurts!
Amber was no longer on the line, but it felt like she still was, telling her over and over to call BK.
Even with the tightness in her chest, she went upstairs to tell BK.
She saw the clothes he had worn earlier on the floor, so she knew he was in the bathroom.
She walked toward the bathroom door and turned the knob. BK never locked the door when he was showering.
Their eyes met when she opened the door.
“B-baby…”
“A-Amber called. She said she might be giving birth. S-so she needs you… and your child…” She couldn’t stop the tears from falling all of a sudden.
BK wiped his face under the shower. He must’ve seen her tears, which she quickly brushed away.
“S-she needs you, BK…”
“But baby…”
“She’s giving birth, BK.” She swallowed hard. It hurts so much to say that. “Your child and Amber need you. Can’t you understand that?” She held on to the doorframe tightly. She felt like she might collapse any second.
“I-I’m sorry, baby…”
She looked up at her husband. “Go, BK! Amber said she needs you! Don’t mind me, I’m fine… I-I’m fine here…”
He stepped closer, but she backed away.
“J-Just go, BK.” She gathered all her strength to turn away from him. She managed to do it. But as she turned her back, her tears started to fall again. She couldn’t stop them anymore. They streamed freely down her face.
“We will talk after this, baby! Bear with me, please!” she heard him shout.
She also heard the loud slam of the bathroom door. Then his voice was yelling again.
Her feet took her to the dark part at the back of the house. She couldn’t bear to see her husband walking out that door… to go to them.
Moments later, she heard the engine of their car start in the garage. Her tears poured again the moment he drove off.
She had no idea how long she had been there. She only went back inside the house when it started to drizzle.
She couldn’t sleep that night thinking about her husband, so she decided to follow him to the hospital where Amber gave birth. She just couldn’t stay still. She wanted to see the child. She knew the place. BK had texted her the hospital’s name.
The nurse pointed out where Amber was. She had just given birth, and thankfully, everything went well. She was now being transferred to her private room.
She froze mid-step when she spotted BK’s mother rushing in. They were headed in the same direction. They already knew, making her feel even more sorry for herself.
She followed the older woman’s path. She couldn’t help but lean on the wall when she saw BK holding a baby. He smiled sweetly when he saw his mother and showed her the child in his arms.
She slapped her own chest at the sight. The older woman was beaming as she took the baby from BK.
It hurts. She was the wife, yet she couldn’t give him a child or a grandchild—to his parents.
The memory of losing her own child came flooding back. If only the baby hadn’t been taken from her so soon. She wished she, too, had seen her husband smile that way… or his mother.
What else did she have to fight for?
She couldn’t take the scene any longer, so she quickly walked out. They were already heading into Amber’s room anyway.
She wanted to forget, so her feet took her to a bar. She didn’t even know the place, but she boldly entered just to drink.
She tasted almost every kind of alcohol that the bar offered. She just wanted to distract herself. She wanted to forget. If there were a drink that could erase what she was feeling, she’d order it. She didn’t care how expensive it was. It was her husband’s credit card anyway.
Some men tried to talk to her, but she ignored them. Her focus was only on her drink.
“W-where’s your bathroom?” she shouted to the bartender after a while.
It was getting too loud inside.
Her eyes were already hazy while she waited for his reply.
“Just go straight, ma’am, then turn right at the end.”
He pointed, but she didn’t follow. Her attention shifted to a familiar figure beside her.
“What are you doing here, Miss Hernandez?” She laughed at her professor’s question.
“S-Shouldn’t I be asking you that, Sir? What are you doing here?”
“I’m taking you home, Miss Hernandez. Give me your address,” he said instead of answering.
“Hey, hey! You didn’t come here with me, so why would I go home with you, Sir?” She turned to the bartender again and asked where the bathroom was.
She was about to step forward when she lost her balance. Thankfully, Emmanuel caught her.
“Dammit, Daphne! Look at you now! I want you to go home now.”
“I-I don’t want to! I like it here! I still want to taste all the drinks—” She didn’t finish. He suddenly lifted her into his arms.
“P-put me down! Sir, come on!”
“Shut up, Miss Hernandez!”
She held her head when dizziness hit her. She couldn’t speak anymore. Her hands clutched her face so she wouldn’t see the spinning world.
Now she truly felt the effect of all the mixed liquor.
She clung tightly to Emmanuel’s arm as he carried her to his car. He even fastened her seatbelt because she was practically limp. Her strength was suddenly gone.
“Do you have an ID on you, Daphne? I’m driving you home now.”
“I-I don’t want to go home… I’ll only be sad there, Sir…”
“Where’s your husband?”
She laughed at his question and looked at him.
“H-He’s with his other family. H-He’s happy, while I’m crying.” She started sobbing again. “I-it hurts so much to see your husband happy with someone else. What about me, Sir?”
“Enough, Daphne. Thinking about them will only hurt more. Right now, think of yourself. You said it yourself. You’re alone. But you still have your parents. Why not go to Norway?”
She shook her head. “I-I don’t want to add to their problems, Sir.”
Emmanuel couldn’t hold back anymore. He pulled Daphne close and comforted her by rubbing her back. They stayed like that for a long while. He didn’t notice her falling asleep. That’s why he no longer heard her sobbing.
So Emmanuel made the decision to take Daphne to his own home, a place no one knew was his. He just didn’t want anyone to see them.
