Chapter 48

Claire nodded, a smile tugging at her lips. "You’re on your own for that one."

Heather winked and disappeared into the crowd, leaving Claire alone on the dance floor. The music swirled around her, and for a moment, she closed her eyes again, letting it fill her.

Claire and Heather stood outside the club, the pulsing bass from inside thumping through the walls, making the ground vibrate beneath their feet. The neon lights from the sign above flashed in brilliant blues and pinks, casting a playful glow across their faces.

"I swear," Heather said, adjusting the straps of her tight black dress, "if tonight doesn’t get me into some kind of trouble, I’ll consider it a failure."

Claire smirked, lifting her sunglasses onto her head, squinting at the flashing lights. "We both know trouble loves you, Heather. I'm just here to enjoy the ride."

Heather gave her a sidelong glance, raising an eyebrow. "Are you sure? Because I’ve seen you eyeing that bartender all night."

Claire rolled her eyes. "I'm just appreciating the view."

Heather gave her a playful shove toward the entrance. "You're always ‘just appreciating the view,’ but you never take the plunge. Come on, we’re here to have fun, not just stare at cute guys."

Claire laughed as they entered the club, the music nearly deafening as they were greeted by the pounding rhythm of a deep house beat. The dance floor was already packed with bodies, all moving in time to the music. The strobe lights flashed sporadically, illuminating the sea of people dancing.

Claire could feel the energy of the place, the heat, the excitement. She felt the momentary pull to just let go and forget about everything. The tension she'd been carrying  the stress of her work, the emotions tied up with Evan  it all seemed to dissipate in the dark, seductive atmosphere of the club.

"Alright, let's do this!" Heather shouted over the music, grabbing Claire's hand and pulling her toward the bar.

As they approached, Claire noticed a few glances cast in their direction  some appreciative, some envious. Heather’s dress clung to her curves, the back scooped low, and Claire knew she looked equally stunning in her short, tight black skirt and a cropped top. They were both dressed to turn heads, and it was working.

The bartender, a tall, muscular man with a scruffy beard, caught Claire's gaze and flashed her a grin. "What can I get for you two ladies?" he asked, leaning on the bar.

"Two shots of tequila," Heather answered without hesitation, her smile sharp and playful.

Claire raised an eyebrow. "Tequila? Really?"

Heather gave her a mischievous wink. "Trust me. We need it."

The bartender raised his eyebrows, clearly entertained by their energy. He quickly slid two shot glasses in front of them, filling them with clear liquid.

"To letting go," Heather said, lifting her glass.

"To not thinking about work," Claire replied, clinking her glass against Heather's.

They both threw back the shots, the warm burn of the tequila lighting up their throats.

"That was exactly what I needed," Heather said, slamming the empty glass back down onto the bar. "Let’s dance."

Without waiting for a response, she grabbed Claire's wrist and pulled her toward the dance floor, the music reverberating in their bones.

The lights flickered as they joined the crowd, the rhythm of the music pulling them both into its spell. Claire could feel the heat of bodies around them, the sweat and movement mixing with the pulsating beats. Heather was already in the zone, her hips swaying as she danced like she didn’t have a care in the world.

Claire followed her lead, letting herself fall into the music. She moved with the crowd, her body finding its rhythm as she closed her eyes, allowing the sensation to overtake her.

As the night wore on, Claire felt the weight of her thoughts fade away. No more worrying about Evan or anything else. Here, in this moment, she was just a woman, dancing and laughing with her best friend.

But then, something unexpected happened.

A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped up beside Claire, his presence immediate. She glanced at him, not recognizing him at first. His dark hair was styled perfectly, and his sharp jawline contrasted against his smooth skin. His eyes, a warm brown, caught hers with a knowing smile.

"You look like you’re having fun," he said, his voice low and smooth, barely audible over the music.

Claire raised an eyebrow, looking him up and down. "I was until you distracted me."

He grinned, clearly unfazed. "I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help but notice you. You’re hard to miss."

Claire chuckled, a little breathless from the dancing. "Flattery won’t get you anywhere."

He stepped closer, his body just inches from hers, the heat between them undeniable. "Then what will?"

Claire met his gaze, feeling a spark of something she hadn’t expected. The chemistry was instant, undeniable. She wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol or just the thrill of the moment, but she didn’t pull away.

"I don’t know," she said, a playful smirk curling at the corner of her lips. "Maybe I’ll find out later."

The man’s eyes darkened slightly, his smile shifting into something more intense. "I’m fine with that."

Just then, Heather came up behind Claire, eyes gleaming with mischief. "Hey, I need to steal her for a minute," she said, grabbing Claire’s arm and pulling her away from the man.

Claire shot him a playful look over her shoulder. "You’re lucky," she called back.

Once they were a few feet away, Heather turned to Claire with a wide grin. "Who was that?"

Claire rolled her eyes, her heart still racing. "I don’t know. Some guy who thinks he can just step into my space and distract me."

Heather laughed. "Well, he’s cute. You should talk to him more."

Claire shook her head. "Not tonight. I’m not looking for a distraction."

But even as she said it, she couldn’t shake the feeling of his eyes on her. The chemistry was undeniable. Still, she wasn’t ready. Not tonight.

Not with everything going on.
