The Betrayal
Tony's POV
Roberto's gun was pointed straight at us.
"Step away from the door," he said calmly. "All three of you."
We backed deeper into the mill. My mind was racing, trying to figure out how Roberto had found us so quickly.
"Uncle Roberto," I said. "What are you doing here?"
"Cleaning up a mess," he replied, keeping his gun steady. "A mess that should have been handled weeks ago."
Sofia moved closer to me. "Roberto, we can explain everything."
"Oh, I think I understand perfectly," Roberto said. "My nephew kidnaps a girl. The girl turns out to be an FBI agent. And now both of you are planning to run away together like some romantic movie."
"It's not that simple," I said.
"Isn't it?" Roberto asked. He looked directly at Isabella. "Tell him, Agent Chen. Tell Tony what your real mission was."
Isabella's face went pale. "Roberto, don't."
"Don't what? Don't tell the truth?" Roberto laughed. "The boy deserves to know what kind of game you've been playing."
I looked back and forth between them. "What is he talking about, Isabella?"
Roberto answered before she could. "She's been working with the Chinese family to take down both our organizations."
The words hit me like a physical blow. "What?"
"The FBI didn't just want evidence, Tony," Roberto continued. "They wanted to destroy the Morettis and the Russos completely. And little Sarah here was their perfect weapon."
I stared at Isabella. "Is that true?"
Isabella's eyes filled with tears, but she didn't speak.
"Tell him," Roberto demanded. "Tell him how you were supposed to marry Michael Chen, then feed information to both the FBI and the Chinese about our families' weaknesses."
"Isabella," I said quietly. "Is it true?"
She looked me straight in the eyes. "It was true. But not anymore."
My heart felt like it was breaking all over again. "So everything between us..."
"Everything between us is real," Isabella said quickly. "Tony, I may have started this as a mission, but I fell in love with you. That changed everything."
"Did it?" Roberto asked. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you accomplished exactly what you set out to do."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Roberto smiled coldly. "Think about it, nephew. In the past week, you've turned against your own family. You've stolen classified information. You've helped an FBI agent gather evidence against us. How is that different from what she was supposed to do?"
I felt sick. Was Roberto right? Had Isabella manipulated me into betraying my own family?
"She didn't make me do anything," I said.
"Didn't she?" Roberto asked. "She made you fall in love with her. She made you want to protect her. She made you choose her over your own blood."
I looked at Isabella. "Did you plan all of this?"
"Not all of it," she said. "Tony, I never planned to fall in love with you. That was real."
"But you did plan to use me."
Isabella was quiet for a long moment. "Yes. At first."
The admission felt like a knife in my chest. Even though I already knew the truth, hearing her say it out loud made it worse.
"So Roberto is right," I said. "You accomplished your mission."
"No," Isabella said firmly. "My mission was to destroy your family. But I don't want to destroy you, Tony. I want to save you."
"Save me from what?"
"From becoming like them," Isabella said, looking at Roberto. "From becoming a killer who cares more about money than people."
Roberto laughed. "How noble. The FBI agent wants to save the criminal."
"Tony isn't a criminal," Isabella said. "Not yet. But if he stays in this life, he will be."
"This life made him who he is," Roberto replied. "This life gave him strength, power, respect."
"This life killed his mother," Isabella shot back.
Roberto's face went dark. "Watch your mouth, girl."
"It's true," Isabella continued. "Your family's greed got Maria Moretti killed. And now you want Tony to follow the same path."
"My family's greed?" Roberto asked. "What about your family's lies?"
"What lies?" I asked.
Roberto looked at me with something that might have been pity. "Tony, do you want to know the real reason your mother died?"
"I already know. Michael Chen killed her to keep her quiet about the money."
"That's part of it," Roberto said. "But not all of it."
I felt cold dread creeping up my spine. "What do you mean?"
"Your mother wasn't just going to expose the Chinese family," Roberto said. "She was going to expose Agent Chen too."
Isabella went completely still. "That's not true."
"Isn't it?" Roberto asked. "Maria Moretti found out that the FBI had planted a spy in the Russo family. She found out that Isabella Russo was really Sarah Chen, working undercover."
"That's impossible," I said. "My mother died three years ago. Isabella only started her mission two years ago."
Roberto shook his head. "Sarah Chen has been undercover for five years, not two. She's been playing the long game from the very beginning."
I stared at Isabella in horror. "Five years?"
"Roberto is lying," Isabella said, but her voice wasn't convincing.
"Am I?" Roberto asked. "Then explain how you knew about the tunnel. Explain how you knew exactly where to find evidence about our family's business. Explain how you knew so much about Tony's mother."
Isabella opened her mouth to speak, then closed it again.
"You can't explain it," Roberto said. "Because you've been planning this for five years."
I felt like the ground was disappearing beneath my feet. Everything I thought I knew was falling apart.
"Isabella," I said quietly. "How long have you really been undercover?"
She looked at me with tears streaming down her face. "Tony, please. Let me explain."
"How long?" I repeated.
"Five years," she whispered.
The betrayal was complete. Isabella had been lying to me about everything from the very beginning.
"So when you said you fell in love with me," I said, "that was a lie too."
"No," Isabella said desperately. "That was the only true thing. Tony, I may have been undercover for five years, but I only met you a week ago. What I feel for you is real."
"How can I believe anything you say?"
"Because I'm giving up everything for you," Isabella said. "My career, my mission, my family. I'm throwing it all away because I love you."
Roberto clapped slowly. "Very touching. But it doesn't matter now."
"What do you mean?" Sofia asked. She had been quiet through the whole conversation, but now she looked scared.
"I mean that all three of you know too much," Roberto said. "The FBI raid is happening in six hours. When it does, everyone connected to this mess needs to be gone."
"Gone?" I asked.
"Dead," Roberto said simply. "You, your sister, and Agent Chen. All loose ends tied up."
I stepped in front of Isabella. "You're not going to hurt her."
"I'm not going to hurt anyone," Roberto said. "You're going to do it for me."
"What?"
Roberto reached into his jacket and pulled out a second gun. He tossed it to me.
"Kill her," he said. "Kill the FBI agent who destroyed our family. Prove that you're still loyal to your blood."
I caught the gun but didn't raise it. "I won't do it."
"Then I'll kill all three of you," Roberto said.
"Roberto, please," Sofia said. "There has to be another way."
"There is no other way," Roberto replied. "Tony, you have ten seconds to choose. Kill her, or watch everyone you love die."
I looked at the gun in my hands, then at Isabella, then at my uncle.
"Choose," Roberto said, raising his own gun.
I made my choice.
But before I could act on it, Roberto's finger moved on the trigger.
The gunshot was deafeningly loud in the enclosed space.
I saw the muzzle flash, but I couldn't tell where the bullet was going.
Was he shooting Isabella?
Was he shooting me?
Everything happened too fast to know for sure.
