Chapter 22: Protect the GIrl

"James, if you don't run, we're both going to die."

"Zerith is going to destroy our planet."

…

"Mira… Mira!"

The demon's shriek hit her like a blade. The sound did not simply reach her ears. It pressed inward like fingers digging behind her eyes, like something searching. The mana around her did not flare immediately. It recoiled first, and then it answered.

Mira froze as her eyes glazed and her body trembled, locked upright as if something inside her had seized control. Orange and green mana bled from her in violent bursts.

"Mira! Snap out of it!" Jax shouted.

His voice did not shake.

Without acknowledgment, Mira lunged forward. The air cracked as ice spikes shattered beneath her first step, and Jax felt the difference immediately.

That was not how Mira moved.

Mira was precise and calculated, every step measured. This was instinct stripped bare. There was no hesitation and no structure, like something else had taken hold of the controls and pushed everything forward at once.

She closed the distance in a blink with her blade blazing white with mana. When she planted her foot, the ice fractured beneath the force and then gave out. The demon surged forward with massive black wings spreading wide. The air warped around them.

"Stone shield!"

The wall of stone snapped into place between Mira and the demon. It shattered instantly, exploding into dust and broken fragments. Jax had moved in the sliver of time the shield bought him. He caught Mira before her footing collapsed entirely and pulled her into him, throwing up a second shield that was thinner but wider, just enough to mask them.

He ran until he had put enough distance between them and the threat before finally looking down.

Mira was awake.

Her eyes locked onto him like he was the only person in the world.

"Mira… you're awake?"

"Maybe," she replied softly, leaning into the earth construct he carried her on. "You looked so cool I didn't want to lose my free ride."

He let out a slow breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"Are you okay?" he asked while continuing to run.

"I think so… when that scream reached me it felt like something grabbed me and pulled me away from here." She swallowed before continuing. "It forced me to see something, Jax."

Her voice was not shaken, and that frightened him more than if it had been. Mira did not scare easily and she did not rattle, but there was distance in her eyes now. It was not panic. It was recognition, like she had brushed against something that had already been waiting.

"Another world? You mean not Partinew?"

He carefully set her down and immediately reached for his books.

"There was nothing there. Just emptiness. But I heard a voice yelling about Zerith." She brushed dirt from her clothes. "Do any of your books mention that name?"

"Mira, you moved too fast. You weren't answering when I yelled for you." He flipped pages quickly while speaking. "When you froze, your aura didn't just spike. It split."

Jax had studied mana theory for years. Aura fluctuation was normal under stress. Layering was not. Two signatures occupying the same space without collapse meant one of two things.

Fusion.

Or an intrusion.

"There was yours," he continued quietly, "and something else. It didn't match."

Her expression shifted.

"There isn't anything written about Zerith," Jax muttered after scanning several pages. "Nothing official. Nothing hidden." He looked up at her again. "Is there anything else you can remember?"

Mira went still before answering.

"I could smell it," she said finally. "Wherever I was… it smelled like ash. Like something already burned."

"Can you try to focus on it?"

She sat down and closed her eyes, breathing steadily for several long seconds.

"Nope. It's gone."

She playfully answered. Jax nearly stumbled backward.

"You're kidding." He said, letting out a nervous chuckle.

"What?"

"It makes sense," she said lightly. "Real dreams fade after waking."

"This wasn't a dream."

He organized his books and slid them back into place more slowly before speaking again.

"We're gonna have to get stronger, Mira. We were so far out matched, I have no idea how we didn't die."

Mira did not argue. The image of burned land still lingered at the edge of her mind, sharp and heavy, and that unsettled Jax more than the demon had. Normally she would have made a joke or pushed back. She would have teased him about hiding behind shields instead of swinging first. Instead she stayed quiet, her eyes drifting toward the wetlands again.

The Warback Turtle's shell pulsed once more with a faint earth toned glow that felt almost gentle.

"Warbacks don't react because of nothing," Jax muttered. "They anchor mana flow. They don't interfere unless something threatens the ecosystem."

"Like a demon trying to rip pieces of it out?" Mira asked.

The lesser demon had not pursued them after the shield shattered, even though it could have.

"It learned something," Jax said finally, a theory developing. "The demon stopped advancing the moment your aura changed."

"It didn't look confused, more like cautious. What worries me is the grin it had, it looked satisfied."

"About me?" Mira asked, her voice steady even though her fingers flexed unconsciously.

"About whatever answered inside of you when it screamed."

Silence stretched between them. The wetlands shifted again, not violently but enough that the waterline near the turtle receded slightly as mud cracked from the pressure beneath the island. Mira felt it too.

Far across the marsh the lesser demon's wings unfurled again with slow and deliberate motion. Its aura did not flare like before. It coiled and waited.

"Jax," Mira said softly, "what if that scream wasn't for me?"

He looked at her.

"What if it was calling something?"

Another pulse rolled through the island that was stronger than the last. The glow along the turtle's shell brightened enough to reflect across the shallow water. Jax's mind raced as the pieces tried to fit together.

"It's countering something," he breathed.

"Or containing it," Mira added.

The demon's laughter carried across the marsh again, lower now and almost satisfied.

Jax snapped his final book shut.

"We leave. Now."

Mira did not argue. She stood and gathered her things quickly before they moved together, keeping low and using broken ice formations and stone ridges for cover. Behind them the wetlands began to steam, not from heat but from pressure. The turtle lifted its massive head for the first time since they arrived.

Mana thickened in the air until it pressed heavily against their skin. The island did not feel unstable. It felt pressured, like something beneath it had shifted and the world above had not caught up yet.

The Warback Turtle was not reacting to chaos.

It was preparing for impact.

And whatever the lesser demon had started…

It had not finished.
