"Oh, you can forget about that. I'll find it on my own," I said, about to leave. "Okay, but you know that if you're late they'll make you stay another thirty minutes," he informed me, drawing out "thirty minutes" in a sing-song voice. Immediately, I turned around and walked back to him, looking up at his beautiful face; although right now I was really annoyed by it. "Fine, but can you ask him for me. He likes you, and I hate him," I pouted, sticking my bottom lip out, trying to be cute. "Oh, come on, HP. Don't give me that look," Riley pleaded, looking up at the ceiling. It was obvious that no matter how adorable I made myself, he was not going to crack. "Fine," I said, bitterly. "I thought you two made up and we're friends now," he added, glancing back at Drew before looking at me. "I doubt that will ever happen," I deadpanned, but with no time left to waste, I walked around the table to Drew. "Hey, will you help me-" "I doubt that will ever happen," he said coldly, interrupting me while also mimicking the exact same way I said that line to Riley. I don't know why I couldn't tell that he was listening to our whole conversation. "Haha, good one. Anyway, do you know where-" Drew literally bumped into me, purposefully, and walked past me; all while I was talking to him. I throw Riley an "I told you so" look before chasing after Drew. "Wait!" I yelled. Thankfully, most people already left, but that didn't make me feel completely good. If most people were gone then I should've probably been at detention by now. "Come on, Collins! I have something important after this that I can't be late for!" I begged, loud enough for him to hear, but he ignored me and kept walking. When I caught up, I grabbed his arm and ran in front of him. I wasn't surprised my grab didn't slow him down, considering I'm not the biggest or strongest person. "Watch it," he grunted when he walked right into me, which was definitely my fault. "Do you have to be so stubborn?! I answered your question earlier at lunch, can't you at least return the courtesy?!" I shouted, getting frustrated. I could NOT be late for my first babysitting gig. He looked down at me, his expression reading annoyed. Well, at least he stopped. "Come on, it's this way," he grumbled, continuing down the hall. I followed, and eventually we were walking side by side. "You don't have to walk me," I said. "All I need is the room number." "I'm not walking you," he snapped. "I was headed there anyway." "You have detention, too? What did you do?" I don't know why I was talking to him. It was really obvious I bothered him though, so I kept doing it. "I got in a fist fight with your step-brother," he stated plainly, but his expression was becoming more frustrated. "Again?!" I exclaimed, my voice louder than I intended. "No, not again," he said under his breath. "You know what, just stop talking to me, will ya'?" I was about to say a sassy remark back to him, but he dipped into a classroom before I could. I guess this is where dentention is held. Even though I was a few minutes late, I couldn't get in trouble because the teacher wasn't even here yet. Lucky me! And no, I wasn't using sarcasm that time. I sat at a desk in the back, far away from Drew who was sitting at a desk up front. The room was full of students that looked like they were here regularly. Almost all of them are guys, probably class-clowns that didn't know when to stop playing. A few of them smile and nodded at me, then turned their attention back to their conversation not even waiting to see my response. They seemed like cool guys, not freaks or creeps. I'm sure they just get in trouble a lot. Now, the only other girl here was few seats in front of me. She looked like she'd never gotten detention a day in her life. She was literally shaking, her left leg jostling the desk she was sitting at from side to side. I bet she never even had to move her car off of green when she was in kindergarten. Since everyone else was actively talking, I didn't see why I couldn't. "Hey, are you okay?" I asked the girl as I moved to the empty desk right behind her. "Huh? Are you talking to me?" the girl whispered, turning around. She looked young, like a freshman. Her shoulder-length blonde bob with bangs wasn't helping, and she had little red glasses on. She looks like an adorable nerd, so what is she doing here? "Yeah, of course I'm talking to you. I'm Natalie," I said with a genuine smile. "Beth," she replied, offering me a weak smile in return. It was obvious she was trying not to cry. "Beth, what's a girl as nice as you doing here?" She lookd down to the ground before answering. It was like she was ashamed of whatever she had to say. "I-I, I forgot my homework at home twice in a row," she stuttered, her lip trembling, Do not laugh, Natalie. DO NOT LAUGH. You are a terrible person if you do. "Oh, that's terrible," I said, somehow able to keep a straight face. "But that's no reason to get upset." "I know, but now it's going to be on my record that I got detention and my parents are going to be so disappointed! And, oh no! They'll probably tell my gran! Oh, she's going to be so-" "Okay, everyone quiet! You know the rules of detention. No talking. You've got fifty minutes left, so zip it," the teacher that just walked in snapped, saving my ears from Beth's mental breakdown. I recognized her as Mrs. Shaffer, the lazy teacher that was always gone during my World Government class. Doing what she said, everyone stopped talking and started doing work. I was honestly surprised. But, five minutes passed, and now I understood why they were on their best behavior. Just like in class, Mrs. Shaffer was leaving. "I have to do something so, if I'm not back before 4:15 you all can dismiss yourselves," she says and then leaves. Well, just forty-five minutes left of this stupid hour-long detention. Everyone else had gone back to what they were doing before, but I noticed Drew stand up. "Hey! Where are you going?!" I asked, running over to him. "Home," he answered coldly. "But what about Mrs. Shaffer?" "She never comes back to dismiss us." "So you're just going to leave?" I was tempted to do the same. "If you would get out of my way, I already would have," he said, annoyed once again. I didn't even realize I was blocking the door. "Well, I'm leaving, too," I stated. "Good for you, I don't care," he grumbled, pushing past me and out the door. He could be so rude and bitey with his words, but at least I got the answers I needed out of him. I quickly grabbed my bag and followed him. I didn't try to catch up to him because he was rude and mean, but I followed him all the way to the parking lot. Then I got in my car and drove to that diner I went to last week. I was craving a big, fat, cheesy burger. When I got there, the place was practically packed with students and families. I saw Lily, the owner, running back and forth with menus and drinks. I wa relieved to see that she seemed to have more people working now than she did when I was last there. I took a seat on one of the stools up by the counter, same as last time. "What can I get for you?" a pretty girl with sad green eyes asked me. She was in uniform, with a hat on her head that had "Lily's Diner" embroidered across it. But, something about her was so familiar. I looked for her name, but she wasn't wearing a name tag. "A cheeseburger and vanilla shake," I ordere, this time determined to eat and enjoy ALL of it. "One cheeseburger with a 'Nilla!" she yelled to the kitchen, similar to how Lily did. Then she turned to go to the next customer, and I could see the pink at the end of her blonde ponytail. Oh my gosh, it's Leila. I started to think I should introduce myself to her, but stopped. She didn't know me, and the only connection I had to her was the pain in my neck named Drew. Sure, I knew this private thing about her, but that didn't mean we were friends or anything. Instead, I decided to check my Twitter. I was in the middle of retweeting something when I jumped in my seat. CRASH! Waaaaaaaaaaaah! I turned around to see a furious Lily on the ground, a floor covered in broken plates and food, and a crying toddler all at once.
