Chapter 162
Nina arrived quickly. As soon as she walked in, her eyes went straight to my bandaged leg, then moved to my bandaged face. Her eyes immediately welled up with tears that started falling right away.
Before she could even get out the questions she'd been ready to ask, she rushed forward and hugged me, all snotty and teary. "Emma, are you badly hurt? Are you crippled? Is your face ruined? What did the doctor say? You have no idea how scared I was when I heard you'd been kidnapped."
I quickly patted her back to comfort her. "It's okay, I'm not crippled, and my face isn't ruined. Can you please stop crying first?"
Nina hit my back hard, "How could I not cry? You must not be very fortunate, otherwise, how could you be this unlucky? I'll take you to church later and get you blessed."
I quickly pulled her off me. If I didn't stop her now, she was going to give me internal injuries.
"We'll talk about that later. I need to ask you something..."
Right now, her marriage was more important than my injuries. I was thinking about how to gently tell her that Michael wasn't reliable.
But she beat me to it, looking at Oscar, "What's going on with you? Didn't you say you wouldn't let her get hurt again? Every time I see her, she seems more injured than before. Can you handle this or not?"
Oscar quickly stepped between us, protecting me as he said to Nina. "Calm down . Don't touch her, don't hurt her."
Nina looked at me with confusion, "Are you injured somewhere else? Let me see where you're hurt and how bad it is."
My face turned slightly red. Oscar, that big mouth, beat me to it and revealed the answer: "Emily is pregnant, but she's not stable yet. The doctor said we have to be really careful. You're hugging and shaking her so much, we could lose the baby."
I turned to glare at him. Before I could say anything, Nina looked at me with scrutiny: "Is what he said true?"
For some reason, facing her questioning made me feel a bit guilty. "Probably... probably, I guess. I don't feel anything, but the doctor said the test showed I'm pregnant. So... you're going to be a godmother. Aren't you happy?"
Nina looked at me, then at Oscar, her face full of disbelief. "How... how could you suddenly be pregnant? That's way too shocking and unexpected. I'm not even mentally prepared yet."
I snapped back to reality. This wasn't the time for me to face her judgment. I turned the tables, "Never mind about me. What about you, what's your relationship with Michael?"
Nina's eyes shifted to look at Michael. Her face turned red, and she coughed, saying somewhat awkwardly, "We're... we're... just friends. What else could we be?"
Michael's previously evasive gaze suddenly sharpened. He turned to look at Nina with a half-smile, "Friends?"
Nina shot him a look. Even I could tell she was signaling him not to say anything and to just brush me off for now.
But Michael didn't seem to get it. He pressed on relentlessly, "Just friends? Then what do you call all those times we've been having sex these past few days?"
I choked on my own saliva and started coughing violently.
Oscar quickly came over to pat my shoulder and help me breathe. Nina's eyes went wide, and her cheeks visibly reddened.
Michael slowly approached Nina, looking down at her as he asked word by word: "Well? Tell me, do you have sex with all your other friends too?"
The pressure made Nina shrink back. She swallowed and didn't dare look at Michael's aggressive eyes, but facing his questioning, she still pushed him away and argued stubbornly. "That was just... physical needs. Shut up, please."
Michael raised an eyebrow at Nina. "You better explain to me what you mean by ''physical needs.'"
Nina showed a somewhat pleading expression, quietly clasping her hands together in a prayer gesture, "I'll explain when we get back, okay? This is a hospital."
I sighed from the side, "I already heard everything. Don't try to hide it from me, Nina. I know you like good-looking men, but not every handsome guy is a good person. You've only known him a few days, you don't understand him at all. Don't make decisions so quickly."
Nina was about to explain when Michael pulled her behind him and looked at me with slight disappointment, "Emily, maybe she hasn't known me long, but you've known me long enough, right? So you tell me, what kind of person am I? Why are you making me sound so cruel?"
I touched my nose. I couldn't exactly say to his face that he wasn't a good person, could I? He wasn't just my former boss, he'd also just gone through all that trouble to rescue me. I couldn't expose him that quickly.
"Well... I didn't mean you're not good. It's just that you two... aren't suitable. Nina is pretty innocent. If she's with you, I'm afraid you'll take advantage of her. I don't mind if you're friends, but for a boyfriend, she should find someone she can handle."
I shot Nina a look, having already offended Michael for her sake. I hoped she could take the hint, "Right, Nina?"
Michael pressed his lips together tightly, his gaze darkening, "Is that really how you see me?"
Nina quickly tugged at him, stepping between us, "Don't, don't—Emma's still injured. Don't upset her. Um... I know what you mean. I'll think about it carefully."
Michael frowned, his expression full of doubt. "What do you mean? What are you going to think about carefully?"
Nina quickly tried to soothe him. "I mean we'll discuss it properly in private. Right now what's important is that Emma needs to recover. She's pregnant. We can't make her upset. Why don't you step out for a bit?"
Michael looked at me, then at Nina in disbelief, but finally nodded. "You two talk. I'll go out and make a call."
I watched his figure disappear through the hospital room door, then glanced at Oscar. He quickly understood what I meant, touched his nose and said with an awkward smile: "You two talk. I've got something to do outside too."
Soon only Nina and I were left in the room. I took a deep breath, pulled Nina's hand over, and said earnestly, "Nina, listen to me. Michael isn't good enough for you. Don't be stupid. He's cold and ruthless, petty and holds grudges. He's not good enough for you at all. You really need to think this through. When it comes to dating, you can't just look at appearances, you have to look at character too."
Nina also said to me seriously, "I didn't say anything when you were dating Oscar before. After all, he's not bad-looking. But if you're going to have a baby, you need to think about genetics. The Lopez family's scumbag genes are really not worth having. You should think it over carefully too."
