Chapter 39: ; The Cunning Alpha

"What does he want? Is he still following her? Cheska wondered as she thought about whether or not to answer her phone.

"Cheska why don't you answer me?" With a hint of curiosity, Eunice asked as she cut her steak.

Cheska looked at her with uncertainty. "I'm Matthew... I kept this dinner a secret from him. If he finds out the truth, I'm afraid he'll be angry!" She spoke in a nervous whisper.

Eunice's eyes got bigger as she laughed. "What would be wrong with eating dinner outside? He isn't your dad, so why would he be angry?" She laughed and enjoyed every bit of the excitement.

When the call was over, Cheska saw that Eunice was right. She wasn't doing anything wrong, so there was no reason for her to be afraid. Also, the council had asked her to come, so his anger didn't matter. Keeping this in mind, she put her phone down and kept eating, trying to ignore the growing tension.

"Cheksa, I've heard that the sun shining on the cobblestone streets of the town makes it look stunning. Could you be kind enough to show me around?" With a big grin on his face, Xander asked.

Cheska thought his smile was weird, but she tried to keep her cool. "Alpha Xander, I can't do that right now... What about the government? Since they worked so hard on the event, I'm sure they can come up with a way for you to see the town."

"Hahaha! Cheska means she won't ask you out, "Eunice made fun of them, and her voice was full of sarcasm.

Xander was annoyed by her, but the council couldn't do anything to hurt her because she was the daughter of a powerful alpha.

"It's okay... If I win the contest, nothing will stop me from doing what I want to do. We can go anywhere in the world and no one will get mad at us." Xander replied with a smile that showed he understood.

"No kidding... You can only hope for that to happen, since it never does "Eunice said something, and her eyes lit up with mischief.

"Hahaha! Let's give a cheer!" The head council said this to try to stop Eunice and Xander from fighting.

Cheska let out a sigh of relief and took a sip of the champagne. "For a peaceful end to the tournament?" she asked and raised her glass, hoping that the rest of the night would be less exciting.

After dinner, the head council asked Eunice to join them, and Cheska thought that Matthew was used to get Eunice to say yes.

So, Cheska was left at the table with Xander, who asked with a sweet smile if they could go for a walk together. Cheska knew it would be rude to say no to him, so she took him up on his offer.

Cheska made sure they stayed in the light as they walked across the vast land, so they could enjoy the cool breeze that blew across their faces.

"I heard that you knew Matthew. Is it true?" The question made Cheska frown.

"What made you think that? From what I know, my relationship with Matthew is far from close..."

"I do remember training in the Shadow City, though. He always went back to his room and waited for a phone call from home..." Cheska stopped walking and looked at Xander in surprise as he went on.

Since Matthew left for training, they hadn't talked. "Matthew seems to be talking to our younger brother... I never talked to him, "Cheska explained and gave a smile.

Xander smiled widely and looked happy. "Great! Now I can feel better... Your lack of closeness to Matthew suggests that you don't have any ideas about him."

Cheska made a shocked face. "Alpha Xander! That's crazy! I don't like Matthew, of course! I'm related to him. Your joke is so bad that it's no longer funny." She said it loudly to try to convince him that she wasn't lying.

"Sorry, but every woman I know falls in love with Matthew, as you know... When we trained together, that was one problem, "Xander explained, not seeming to notice how uncomfortable Cheska was.

Not only did Xander's reasoning surprise Cheska, but so did the way he held her hand and touched her cheek. She quickly moved away from him to get away from him. She felt awkward and asked, "What are you doing?"

Xander didn't seem to get the message, so he moved closer to her and put his hand on her shoulder. "You don't seem to know where you're going. Do you know that turning your back on an alpha is a sin? "He said it in a whisper, his hot breath on her neck.

"Alpha Xander! You should be aware that you are not in a place you are used to. You are in the Thunder City right now. So, I want you to show me respect, or else-" Cheska was trying to be strong, but her knees were shaking. Not because they were scared, but because they were mad.

"What if not? Will you tell the council of Thunder? Do you think that I'm scared to death? Why do you think everyone on your panel liked this dinner? Because it's supposed to be the other way around!" Xander replied, wrapping his hand around her and making her feel warm.

Cheska did her best to calm down. "The Thunder pack is the weakest on the whole continent, which is why your council and alpha came up with a plan. Huh! Matthew has really impressed me... He uses you to make friends with other people." Xander kept talking, and Cheska turned around to face him.

Cheska told herself that Xander was not telling the truth. Matthew didn't agree, and she couldn't let what Xander said bother her. "Stop right now, or you'll regret it," she told him in a firm voice.

"You really are a goddess, though... But I still can't see why all the alphas want you as their Luna... I don't know if you're worth it, but seeing you this close—" Xander said as he looked at her face. His hand went around her waist and closed the space between them.

Cheska's fears went away, and she felt like she could do anything. In an instant, she couldn't see and couldn't think.
