Chapter 62: Dark

I gasped, my hand coming to my mouth, but Sin only started to laugh.

"You must be getting old, detective. My current wife does not even know Aldo."

"Sin..."

"Neither has she been out of my sight ever since..."

"Ever since you brought her to act like your wife, am I right?"

Sin took a deep breath, but I hated how he didn't even look at me. My mind started to put it all together now. This is why Rosalind had lied. This is why she had made it seem like I wanted the picture scraped off. This is why.

"Sin, I swear...." I started to say, but he brought a long finger to rest on my lips, stopping my words.

"What do you mean by act like my wife?"

"Well, she had made that clear to Aldo. That you and her were not actually married."

"Why would she do that?"

"I think they must have had a relationship."

Sin sucked in a sharp breath. "I do not think you are making sense, detective."

"You have never questioned me before."

"Well, I am now, detective. My wife, Annalise, I am her first man. You are either drunk or the snake I am paying to feed."

The phone line went silent, and I just stood there, my chest heaving, my body shaky as I watched Sin. His eyes were set in a determined stare, and he didn't even bother saying another word.

"You saved my mother, Sin. You paid for her treatment, and she still regards you as her son. Whenever I look at her, I am reminded of that powerless moment where you took my hand. I would never lie to you. I swear on my mother's life. Your current wife is a traitor, and she and Aldo... they are planning to take your money. All of it. Now that she killed Aldo, I am wondering if she intends to go on her own. To continue with their plan."

Sin was quiet for the longest time before he shook his head.

"My wife was with me every single day leading up to the moment Aldo died. Don't make me have to come see you, detective."

"You don't have to. I will come see you this evening, Sin. With evidence."

Sin put the phone down, and for a long minute, his eyes only fixed on the wall above my head. I felt the tears streaming down my cheeks but couldn't do anything else. How was I supposed to start proving my innocence?

"Sin..."

"Go up, Annalise."

He turned away, but I held his arm back, hugging it earnestly, as if I hoped that it would keep him forever on my side.

"You believe me, right? I would never do anything to hurt you. I swear. I swear on my life, Sin. I would never."

He turned to face me, and he gently let his fingers rest on my face, his thumb moving.

"This nonsense just shows that they know what I am denying myself."

My brows furrowed as I struggled to understand what he meant. He gave a small smile, then moved his hand away.

"Go upstairs."

I sniffed, shaking my head. "I... I want to..."

"It's dangerous here. Just do as I ask."

"Dangerous?" I asked, my eyes slowly moving along his face. "But you... -"

"I mean, dangerous for you, sweetheart. Go up."

I swallowed, then nodded slowly. He watched me, his eyes holding a whole vortex in there, one that I knew neither of us was willing to confront.

I walked away, my head low. I could feel his eyes on me as I walked upstairs, my fingers clenched into fists.

I closed the door behind me, then sat on the edge of the bed, my mind struggling to come to terms with everything.

Why would the detective lie? I had seen that photo with Larissa on it. Very clearly. And even if it hadn't been Larissa, how did the detective expect to convince Sin that I had gone to Aldo when I had been with him throughout?

We had watched that news together, and I knew Sin remembered it. Why would they lie about something they couldn't even prove?

I closed my eyes and let the thoughts occupy the darkness I saw, my chest heaving lightly.

It was just late morning, but here I was, my rapist in the same house as me, and a maid and a detective conspiring against me for some reason.

Why did it feel like there were so many people just baselessly out to get Sin? From his own ex-wife to his closest friends, and I am almost sure, his brother too.

As if on cue, a knock came on the door again, causing me to jump. I turned to the door, and it was still locked, thankfully.

I got out of bed, then slowly went to the door and opened it slightly, peeking out. There was no one. My brows furrowed, and I had just started to close it back when a foot came between, stopping it.

I gasped and let go of the door, moving back, a bit out of surprise and more out of fear. To my horror, Enrique slowly walked in, his eyes thin as he watched me. Luckily, he looked nothing like Sin.

"What.. what are you doing here?"

He gave a small smile. "I came to look for my brother, Madam."

He had a mocking undertone to his words, and I struggled to keep calm to make sure he wouldn't see just how scared of him I was.

"He is downstairs. Please leave."

He smiled. "I don't think I have introduced myself to you," he said, then took a step further, causing me to immediately move back, widening the gap between us. "My name is Enrique and..."

"Please leave," I said, then turned away, my body trembling hard. Why was this happening to me? Why was everyone so against me?

"Are you still scared of me?"

I froze, then slowly turned to him. His smile was gone, and his eyes were rather intense.

"What?"

"You are that Annalise, are you not? No amount of fancy stuff would make me forget you. I still clearly remember how you taste down there."

Before it could register with me that I was supposed to be scared of this man, I covered the distance and slapped him hard across the cheek.

His hand immediately cupped his cheek, and he broke into a small smile.

"You are still as feisty as ever, my dear Annalise."

"Get out."

"I will," he said, raising his hand in surrender. "I guess morals now have a price to them, huh? My brother gets to have you in his bed while I get slapped across the face. Double standards, huh?"

I opened my mouth to talk when the door opened, and Sin walked in, his eyes dark as he watched Enrique.

"I am sure I made it abundantly clear that I don't want you alone with my wife."
