Chapter 47: Naive
"You are alive. I mean, you just..." He suddenly trailed off as his eyes fell on something behind me.
I turned, only to see Sin's dark gaze falling between us, his brows drawn, his eyes shielded by his thick lashes. I swallowed, then turned away from Dan, knowing that with Sin there, I couldn't do much.
Sin led me to the same table he had been occupying the day he had come, and he slowly removed his jacket, then rested it on the empty seat next to him.
I turned to Dan as he walked past me, his head low. There was one other worker, a female, who was behind the counter. I watched as Dan gave her instructions, and she immediately went to work, just as clumsily as I had done it, and it felt like seeing myself in 3D.
Sin didn't say a word to me, and my eyes fell on Dan as he watched me from behind, as the girl came to us with what I knew to be the special.
She laid it out in front of us and walked away, her eyes lingering a little longer than normal on Sin.
"Annalise," Sin said, causing me to turn to him, my lips parting.
"Y... yes?"
"Eat."
I nodded, then reached for the cutlery, my eyes occasionally darting to Dan. He was still looking at me, and I looked away, closing my eyes nervously.
If Sin noticed anything, he didn't say a word and calmly ate a bit before he turned back to the glass of wine in front of him.
I leaned back, then sighed. "Can I go to the restroom?"
Sin gave a small chuckle, then nodded without even looking at me. I stood up, then took a step away from the table before Sin's voice stopped me in place.
"I hope you will give me the same liberty to use this gun if I see you with him in that restroom."
I stopped, then turned, my lips parting. "What?"
Sin slowly turned to me, his elbows resting on the table, his fingers intertwined together, his chin resting on them. His eyes watched me before they slowly turned to Dan, who had, honestly, been preparing to go with me.
It's not like I was doing anything bad, but I felt like I owed him an explanation, at least. In the end, Sin had found me. Dan never did.
"Do not make me repeat myself, Annalise. Go to the restroom, but the Lord helps him if he follows you."
The threat sent shivers down my spine, and I slowly looked up to Dan, who already looked defeated. He shrugged, then gave me a small smile before he slowly disappeared to the back.
I closed my eyes, then sighed and slowly sat back, my eyes blinking rapidly.
"You don't need the restroom anymore?" Sin asked, a slightly mocking tone tainting his calm voice.
"No," I said, swallowing. "I just don't know if it is fair that you get to sometimes run to Larissa and then apologize later, and I can't even talk."
"Who says you can't talk? But why do you need to do it in the restroom?" He raised his eyes to me, then tilted his head to the side, as if he was waiting for an answer.
Well, I did have one.
"Because he is afraid of you, Sin."
Sin gave a small laugh. "If he is afraid of me, then maybe he isn't as innocent as you seem to believe. You are naive, Annalise. You are in the heart of crime, and you want to go around trusting people you barely know because he was once nice to you."
I swallowed, my eyes flicking up to the kitchen. Dan was behind it, and I doubt he could hear what Sin was saying because he was giving me a small smile, his eyes tender.
This man was definitely harmless. There was no way.
A man suddenly came to Sin and slowly leaned to whisper something in his ear. Sin didn't move and simply nodded, saying nothing to the man.
"Sin, I just..."
"Save it, Annalise." Without another word, he grabbed the case from the table, then walked to the door where I remember having that interview. I remembered catching a glimpse of the watch I had stolen the day I had that interview.
I swallowed, looking up. Dan was gone too, and I sighed, closing my eyes a little. Maybe Sin was right. There were so many things that were extremely shady about this entire place, and I couldn't be naive to think that anyone here would be different from Sin himself.
I turned to the closed door, my mind curious as I tried to understand what was going on in there. Just like Dan had sent me away the first day, the serving girl was gone too, and the pattern just felt a little too similar.
Slowly, I stood up and started to walk towards the door. It was quiet at first before I heard Sin's unmistakable voice.
"So, you killed Aldo."
My lips parted, and I took a step back, my eyes wide. Sin had definitely said he didn't. Had he been playing on my intelligence? Had he actually killed Aldo by sending someone else to do it? Was he trying to get Larissa back by making her a widow?
The world seemed to spin around in front of me, and I swallowed, my chest heaving as I tried to stand on my feet.
I couldn't hear anything above the rush of blood in my ears, and suddenly, I heard the sound of a gunshot.
A gasp escaped my lips, and in the heat and confusion, I found myself propelled forward, opening the damned door.
My eyes fell on four other men, including Dan sitting on chairs, each with a grim expression on his face.
My lips parted as my eyes finally fell on Sin. He was squatting on the floor, one hand resting elegantly off his thigh, the other holding a gun.
The case from earlier was open on the table, and I now knew what that case had been for.
Right in front of Sin was a dead man, his blood running slowly on the marble floor. I gasped again, tears filling my eyes.
Sin slowly turned to me before he straightened, his hand dropping the gun on the table. Dan immediately handed him a napkin, then put the gun away.
"Baby girl," Sin breathed, a sinister smile lifting his lips. "How do you like judgment day?"
