Chapter 195: THE BINDING THREAD
(Isabella’s POV)
I lay awake long after he fell asleep.
The room was quiet except for the faint rhythm of his breathing and the distant hum of the city that had forgotten us. The air smelled faintly of dust and whiskey. Shadows pooled in the corners, shifting when the curtain stirred.
My body was tired, but my mind would not rest.
Because for the first time, I asked myself the question I had been avoiding since the beginning:
Did I ever choose him?
At first, I thought I had.
I thought I had chosen to seduce him, chosen to weave myself into his empire, chosen to use his power against him but when the mask of revenge was stripped away, what was left?
Pity?
Obsession?
Love?
I could not tell.
All I knew was that I couldn’t walk away.
Not yet.
I turned my head on the pillow and looked at him.
Julian Sterling, the man who had been king of glass towers and iron walls, now curled beside me like a boy who had lost his way home. His face, even in sleep, looked strained, as though haunted by the ghosts of everything he had lost.
And yet his hand still reached for me, even in dreams, fingers curled against the blanket as if he might lose me if he didn’t hold on tight enough.
I should have felt triumph.
Instead, I felt bound.
Bound not by chains, not by fear, but by something harder to name.
A thread I couldn’t cut.
I pressed my hand lightly against my chest, where my heart stuttered beneath my palm.
Was this what love was supposed to feel like? Because it didn’t feel pure. It didn’t feel like the stories.
It felt heavy.
It felt like drowning.
It felt like ruin and yet, I couldn’t let go.
\---
(Julian’s POV)
When I woke, she was already awake, her body still, her gaze far away.
That distance burned through me like acid.
I reached for her before the panic could settle, my hand brushing against her arm, pulling her gently but firmly back into me.
“Isabella,” I whispered, my voice raw with sleep.
She turned her face toward me slowly, her eyes unreadable.
I hated when I couldn’t read her.
I hated when I felt the space between us stretch because if she pulled away, even a little, I knew I would shatter.
I cupped her face, forcing her to see me, to hear me.
“You’re not just mine,” I said, my voice breaking with the weight of it. “I’m yours. Do you understand that? If you let go, I break. If you go, I go.”
Her lips parted slightly, but no words came.
The silence terrified me.
So I pressed my forehead to hers and held her there, as if our skulls could fuse, as if I could carve my devotion into her bones.
“I need you,” I whispered. “More than anything. More than life.”
And in that moment, it wasn’t possession.
It wasn’t power.
It was survival.
She was the only thing keeping me alive.
\---
(Isabella’s POV)
His words cut through me like glass.
You’re not just mine. I’m yours. If you let go, I break.
It should have terrified me.
It should have made me recoil, should have reminded me that this was obsession, not love.
But instead, it sank into me with a strange, dangerous tenderness.
Because I knew he meant it.
And because part of me wanted to believe it.
\---
I touched his hand where it framed my face, my fingers trembling.
For a moment, I let myself imagine what it would feel like if this were love — the kind I had once dreamed of before my life turned into fire and ash.
But the thought slipped away as quickly as it came.
Because this wasn’t freedom.
This was a binding thread, wrapped too tightly to cut, too tangled to escape.
And the worst part was, I wasn’t sure I wanted to.
\---
(Julian’s POV)
Her silence still lingered, but when her hand covered mine, the panic in my chest eased.
She wasn’t pulling away.
She was still here.
That was all I needed.
I pressed a kiss against her temple, her hair damp with the heat of the night.
“You’re the only truth left,” I whispered. “Everything else is gone. But not you. Never you.”
And I believed it.
Because even if the world called me a ghost, even if Vivian wore the crown of my ruin, I still had this.
I still had her.
And as long as she stayed, I hadn’t truly fallen.
(Isabella’s POV)
His kiss burned against my skin. His words pressed into my heart like iron.
You’re the only truth left.
It was devotion.
It was love.
It was a cage.
I closed my eyes and let the silence stretch between us again.
Because the truth was, I didn’t know anymore if I stayed out of love, or out of fear of what would happen if I let go.
I only knew that I couldn’t leave.
Not yet.
\---
And maybe that was the cruelest part of all.
That I had destroyed him, only to destroy myself alongside him.
That revenge had bound me to the very man I had sworn to ruin.
That the thread between us was not freedom, not triumph, not choice.
It was survival.
It was fire.
It was ruin.
\---
(Julian’s POV)
She didn’t answer me.
But she didn’t leave.
And for me, that was enough.
Because every silence, every hesitation, every tremor — it all still tied her to me.
The thread between us might fray, but it would never break.
Not as long as I lived.
Not as long as she breathed beside me.
I closed my eyes and held her tighter, whispering the vow that had become my prayer:
“You’ll never lose me. And I’ll never lose you.”
\---
(Isabella’s POV)
The words wrapped around me like chains, heavy but warm.
And in the quiet, I realized:
Maybe love wasn’t freedom after all.
Maybe love was the binding thread that held you even when you wanted to run.
And maybe this — this ruin, this fire, this obsession — was the only kind of love left for us.
