Chapter 16: Useless
Alex POV:
I am a little better now. I wanted to go to Hailey’s house, but it seemed impossible now too. I don’t know if I will have to fight Robert. I can’t do that if I am not even well.
Summer was also worried. “Should I call again?” she asked as she came back with a coffee.
“You hadn’t tried again from yesterday, but they should call back”
“Yeah, I know, but you know something’s wrong”
“Yeah, right”
“So, I guess I should call”
“okay”
She smiled. She probably doesn’t know how dangerous Robert can be. But I don’t think she will get in any trouble. I hope Robert doesn’t fall so down to even hurt her.
I waited for her to come back.

Summer POV:
I dialed Hailey’s number and it was picked up.
“Hello?” I said.
“Hey” I heard Hailey’s voice. I sighed. I was so relaxed to hear her voice. It isn’t like I didn’t think she is alive or something, but I wanted to talk to her.
“Hailey, I missed you”
“Aw summer” I could see her smiling face. “I missed you too, sister”
“Aha. How are you?”
“Good. You?”
“Good too.”
“What’s up?” she asked me.
“Nothing. Uh, why didn’t you pick up my calls yesterday?” I tried to ask her.
“Your calls? Ah, actually yesterday, my phone was with Robert and so I didn’t notice.”
“Oh, that’s sad,” I replied. But Robert said that she was sleeping. He lied. Or even if she was, her phone wasn’t with her because of Robert, and he didn’t tell us that.
“Mm-hm.”
“You should keep your phone with you.”
She laughed. “It is with me, sis. Robert just happened to have it yesterday.”
“Okay.” I laughed back, even though it wasn’t funny. I just didn’t think that she was happy. People usually laugh at non-humorous things when they want to hide pain or sadness.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” I asked again.
“Yeah…why?”
“Nothing, just a sister instinct,” I replied, and she laughed.
“Aha, this time it is wrong.”
“Oh…that’s good, you shouldn't be sad.”
I sighed. I could understand that she didn’t want to share this, but she shouldn’t bear it alone. We were all here to help her this time. Alex was here too.
“You know you can share anything with me, right?” I asked her.
“Yes!”
“Good.”
We talked for a few more minutes before she had to go.
“Okay, then we will talk later,” I said.
“Bye.”
The call ended and I stared at the screen for a minute. I don’t know what is happening in her life, but it is surely something that she can’t bear.
She didn’t sound sad or anything, but I could feel it. She was hiding something, and it was something sad. She was hiding some emotions. That’s why she was behaving somewhat weirdly and laughing on, well, literally anything.
I went back to my room and Alex was trying to sit.
“Hey hey—” I went to him and took his hand. “What are you doing?”
“Trying to be a normal human”
“You are normal. getting hurt is normal and getting healed is normal too”
“Uh, see” He sighed. “Okay first tell me, is everything okay there?”
“yeah, as she said so…but…”
“But?” he asked, “But it felt as if she was sad. Like she was hiding something…”
“That’s bad…” he sighed. “Look, Summer. We have to go there soon and unexpectedly to see what’s going on, okay?”
“Okay, but after you get well”
“Summer but—”
“yes”
“okay, when I am good enough to stand”
“Okay”
We both sighed. I just hope she remains safe until Alex gets well. He looks so tense about this, and he should not stress himself. But what can I do now? He is of course worried about his sister.
I wonder what is up with Robert. I really don’t like him, and I will just hate him if he has changed again. Hailey is literally the best woman one can get. I mean, just look at her, she forgave him after all the shit he did. really no woman would forgive so easily, but she did.
What is the point in hurting the biggest happiness of one’s life? I will never understand such people. They just do it for fun, I guess.
I looked at Alex and he had a hand on his forehead.
“Don’t worry,” I said.
“Uh, Summer. I wanna save her but I can’t even go there. I feel so useless”
“Alex, it will be fine soon, okay?”
“I hope…”
I sighed. Please help us, God. Please save Hailey from Robert.
