Chapter 87
“I used to think marriage troubs were just a game,” I said finally. And in that game, I was always the loser against him. But now? 1 want to try something different. I have nothing left to lose. I’m going to give them a gift they won’t forget–let them taste what suffering feels like.”
Emily’s grip tightened. “Don’t do anything stupid!”
“I won’t,” I promised, though I wasn’t entirely convinced myself.
Several drinks later, I was tipsy enough to make the call. Ufumbled with my phone and dialed Blake.
When he answered, I let my voice crack. “Blake,” I whispered with a practiced sob. “Why haven’t you called? Do I even have a home to come back to?”
His response was immediate. “Where are you? I’ll come get you!”
After hanging up, I said goodbye to Emily and stumbled toward the club entrance, deliberately disheveled, pulling at my coat and swaying slightly. Blake’s driver spotted me and rushed over to help.
“I’m fine,” I said, brushing him off and yanking the car door open myself.
Inside, Blake was slumped against the seat with his eyes closed. His throat moved as he swallowed, exhaustion written all over him.
“Ma’am,” the driver explained quietly, “Mr. Wright’s been in meetings all day, rushed home, then came straight here. Please excuse
his tiredness.”
He suggested I get in from the other side, but I caught Emily watching worriedly from the entrance. To reassure her, I ignored his advice and slid in directly next to Blake, then swung my leg over to straddle him.
“Close the door,” I told the driver with a deliberate smile.
As the door shut, Blake’s eyes fluttered open in the dim light. He gave me a resigned smile and placed his hands on my hips, then closed his eyes again.
“Having fun?” he asked, his voice rough with fatigue.
“It was okay,” I replied, breathing alcohol–scented air right in his face. “You look beat.”
Blake wrinkled his nose and perked up. “I’m fine,” he countered, mimicking my dismissive tone.
He reached for my face, and suddenly we were kissing hard. The car hit a bump, making me gasp. Blake’s arms tightened around my waist.
He frowned and moved to press the intercom, but I caught his hand and guided it back to me.
I nuzzled his cheek, my lips at his ear. “Was comforting Claire really that exhausting?” I murmured, letti voice as I tightened my grip around his neck.
The alcohol made everything fuzzy. Blake’s hands slid up my back under my shirt, warm against my skin.

He licked my lower lip before answering. “I should be the one complaining. You pissed her off and left me cleaning up your mess. And now you’re jealous?”
“I’m not jealous!” I shot back. “I just… I thought you’d be mad at me. In four years of marriage, I’ve never won against her.”

His voice darkened. “Who told you that lie?”
“Isn’t it true?” I asked, unable to keep disappointment from my tone,
He pinched my waist. “Ungrateful woman. I’ve been working non–stop so I could take you somewhere. Just the two of us.”
My fingers traced his throat. “Where?”
“Cleared my schedule. You pick the place, I’ll have my assistant handle everything.”
“Just us?” My heart pounded, almost afraid to believe it.
“Mmm,” he confirmed. “I realized I never gave you a proper honeymoon. I owe you that much.”
His eyes locked with mine, suddenly intense. “If you keep being this sweet and agreeable, and we’re stuck with each other anyway. I think we could start fresh.”
Blake laced his fingers with mine, his grip warm and firm. “Anna, will you start over with me?”
I looked into his deep blue eyes. Tears welled up as his words washed over me.
