Divorcing My Husband Over His Stepsister’s Secret
Chapter 263
Anna’s POV:
I watched Claire face light up as she heard Blake’s voice on the other end.
Claire, how are you?‘ His deep voice came through, the kind that always got to me.
It was the first time I’d heard Blake’s voice after we separated. His tone was urgent and concerned, obviously worried about Claire. She broke into a radiant smile the moment she heard him.
I stood there in silence, noting how his voice fluctuated with emotion when speaking to her–rich and expressive–so different from the flat, detached way he always spoke to me. It was like watching two different men.
The contrast was piercing. I remained quiet, listening to their conversation while Daniel shot me a questioning look, silently asking if we should leave. I shook my head. I needed to stay. I wanted to talk to Blake about our divorce, and I had to endure this torture first.
Blake could be with whoever he wanted. They always claimed they were “just siblings,” but I knew better. Still, I wasn’t in a position to complain. True letting go isn’t pretending to forget or refusing to speak about it–it’s feeling genuinely at peace deep down.
I remembered how Blake once wanted me to work at Wright Group, saying “this way you can help me when I’m old.” I wondered if his attitude toward his stepmother and stepsister would change if he knew Caroline had caused the death of our child.
“Blakey, I’m doing okay, but working at the company is so exhausting,” Claire whined. “Maybe I should quit. I still have ballet rehearsal tonight.”
“Giving up so soon?” Blake teased, clearly trying to hide his concern about me. “Weren’t you the one who insisted on learning company management? Said you wanted to help me with the family business alongside your ballet career?”
“Well, I didn’t know it would be this hard,” she pouted. “And that assistant is so strict with me–nothing I do is right! It’s so annoying! I just want to learn the basics before Starlit Ballet’s performance season starts, to lighten your load.”
“It’s up to you,” Blake replied indulgently. “If you’re tired, take a break. Getting approvals and paperwork signed is no problem at all. I mainly want you to have some business skills besides ballet, but not at the expense of your dance career.
After chatting a while longer, Blake finally asked what he really wanted to know: “Did you see anyone at the company today?”
“Oh! I almost forgot the important part–I saw Anna today!” Claire exclaimed. “Blakey, do you want to talk to her?”
My heart began to sink, turning cold inch by inch. Invisibly, I clenched my fists tight. I was afraid Blake would hang up at the mention of my name, he wouldn’t want to talk to me.
afraid
I stood up and walked toward Claire. “I’ll talk to him.” I held out my hand for the phone.
Claire glanced at me, then said goodbye to Blake with exaggerated sweetness. “Blakey, I’m giving the phone to Anna now. You two chat.”
Blake’s POV:
My heart started pounding all weird. Anna actually wanted to talk to me, I tried to smile, tried to make the corners of my mouth go up, but after being on those damn mood stabilizers so long, I couldn’t even remember how to smile anymore.
‘Blake,‘ she said.
“Mm,” was all I could get out, trying not to sound as messed up as I felt.
She paused. My cold response didn’t seem to surprise her. I caught that little mocking smile before she asked in that too–calm voice, “When are you coming
back to Boston?”
I just froze up. “Do you…”
Do you miss me?

I had this crazy thought that if Anna sald she missed me, maybe I’d get better instantly, I’d find a way to get to her, and nothing would map hàn than like my drug the thing that could save me or kill me.

But before I could finish asking, she cut me off: ‘Hurry back so we can get our divorce over with
Every word I wanted to say just died in my throat. All that hope drained out of my eyes, leaving nothing. My chest felt like someone had stabbed me, making me double over.
All she could hear was my breathing getting harsh, then my ice–cold voice: “You asked to talk to me just to ask me that?” I was pissed, and I didn’t even know why. “Isn’t there anything else you want to say to me?”
“Like what?” she fired back. “What els

Beep–beep beep!” Blake hung up on me. Just the dial tone.
Claire grabbed the phone back, looking smug as hell,

‘Does Mr. Wright not want the divorce?” Daniel asked after watching that train wreck.
I shook my head and headed out with him. “He just doesn’t want to hear me talk.”
“Try not to let it get to you…” Daniel attempted, but his words just fell flat.

Relationship crap is such a headache. Daniel clearly gave up trying to figure it out. Outside the Wright Group building, he said goodbye. “I’ll have someone watching Caroline, Ms. Wright. We got this.”
I nodded. “Tell me when she takes the bait, but we wait to make our move when I say it’s time. Blake and I need to get this divorce done first.” I was going to put Caroline behind bars, and nobody was stopping me this time–not even Blake!
Daniel offered to drive me before heading back to the office, but I turned him down,
I went to the hospital where I’d been treated during my pregnancy. I grabbed every medical record I could get my hands on and sent everything to Monica.
I needed her to look at all those numbers and tests to see if they could prove that the “poison” I drank had caused what happened.
We hadn’t even been apart an hour when Claire got an urgent call from the suburbs. The doctor sounded panicked: “Miss Wright, you need to come right now. Mr. Wright has hurt himself again…”
