Chapter 195
Anna’s POV:
The warm sensation on my neck caught me by surprise.
I reached up, touching the wetness, and my fingers came away red. The stitches had torn open again.
‘You’re bleeding, Blake said, his voice suddenly tense. His fingers brushed my hair aside, inspecting the wound.
I felt the chill of his touch and the slight tremor in his hand. “We need to go back to the hospital. This could leave a scar if it’s not treated properly.”
I pulled away from him. “I have medication and gauze. I just need to redress it.”
“Why didn’t you tell me you were injured?‘ His blue eyes hardened with accusation.
“We’re divorced, Blake. These things aren’t your concern anymore!”
“Not my concern?” He sat up straighter, the sheets falling to his waist. “You think I don’t care about you getting hurt?”
“All you care about is sex,” I snapped. “You love my body but not how I feel!”
Something shifted in his expression–a flash of hurt crossing his features before his face settled back into that familiar mask of cool detachment.
His phone rang, cutting through the tense silence. The screen lit up with Scarlett’s name.
Blake hesitated before answering. “What is it?” His expression changed as he listened. “Alright.”
“Stomach pain,” he explained after hanging up. “She needs me to-
“Go,” I said flatly. “It’s not like we have a future anyway.”
He stared at me, his jaw tight. ‘Is that it? You’re not going to try to stop me from going to another woman?”
“Your business is no longer my concern,” I replied, keeping my voice steady despite the ache in my chest.
Blake stood there for a long moment, looking like he wanted to say something more. Instead, he just gave me one last, lingering look before walking out the
door.
After he left, I sat alone on the bed, staring at nothing.
Eventually, I dragged myself to the mirror and examined the wound on my neck. The sight of it made tears well up in my eyes.
Still so easily affected by him, I whispered to my reflection, watching tears glisten in my amber eyes.
I couldn’t stay in Scarlett’s house anymore.
I gathered my things and returned to my apartment, collapsing into bed and falling into a dreamless sleep.
The next few days passed in a blur.
Emily informed me that my new assistant would be Daniel, who used to work for my mother.
He had accepted the position without discussing salary, emptied his suitcase of vacation clothes, and packed essentials for work instead,
Soon, Daniel and I were on a flight to Chicago.
The moment we landed, we were whisked away to dinner with influential local business representatives.

I discussed environmental matters related to our case while sipping wine, grateful for Daniel’s presence beside me.
When dinner ended, we weren’t allowed to rest. Instead, we were dragged to another social function.
By the time the event finally ended, both of us were walking unsteadily from all the
alcohol.
We were escorted back to our hotel rooms. I had barely closed my door and hadn’t even changed when I heard a knock.
Assuming it was Daniel wanting to discuss something, I opened the door without checking.
Before I could process what was happening, a white cloth covered my mouth and nose. Then darkness.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Wright, a man’s apologetic voice pulled me from unconsciousness. ‘I didn’t know Ms. Anderson was your wife. She’s completely fine, I assure you. The drug will metabolize naturally with no side effects.”
“No side effects?” Blake’s voice was ice cold. “Then why isn’t she awake yet?”
“Mr. Wright, I truly didn’t know our assessment was being handled by your wife,” the man continued nervously. “We just heard they hired some star marine biologist to create public pressure against us. This was a desperate measure.”
I opened my eyes to see a heavyset man frantically apologizing. With a jolt, I recognized him as one of the men present when I was drugged. Fear crept up my spine.
Blake sat on the sofa, his gaze meeting mine–deep, detached, yet filled with complex emotions.
He stood up. “You can leave. You’re not important enough to talk to me.”
After the man seurried out, Blake turned to me. “From now on, you’re not taking any projects outside of Boston.”
“Just because you saved me once doesn’t mean you can control what I-*
“Control?” he cut me off, voice rising. “If I wasn’t controlling, you might be dead by now!”
“It was just a minor incident,” I said, trying to sound confident. “I’ll be more careful.”
“Minor?” His face flushed with anger. “So minor I couldn’t even coordinate a private jet to take off in time? I was desperate to fly from Boston to get to
you!”
My eyes welled up despite my best efforts.
“Anna, his voice broke slightly, “if you cared about me even a little, you wouldn’t need to work so hard. You blame me for making you lose your job, but from my perspective, that’s nothing. You could have anything you want if you just asked, why scare me like this?”
He stepped forward and pulled me into a tight embrace.
“Let me go,” I whispered.
He didn’t move.
‘I don’t know what you feel for me now,” I said against his chest, “but we can’t be together anymore.”
His body stiffened, but his arms remained locked around me, ignoring my words completely.
He’s always like this, I thought bitterly. Living in his own world, not caring about others‘ feelings.
“Stop monitoring me,” I said more firmly. “My business is no longer your concern. If something happens to me, Daniel will call the police-
“The police?” His tone turned irritated. “If the police were useful, would Daniel have contacted me? Do you think I’m not busy? That I spend my days watching you? Should I have just let you get hurt, is that what you want?”
