Chapter 50 A New Dawn

Chapter 50 A New Dawn
The morning sun was just starting to peek through the thick grey clouds as we pulled up to Mark’s secluded safehouse. My heart was pounding, not with fear this time, but with an overwhelming wave of excitement. For weeks, this house had been the secret shield protecting the most precious parts of our lives.

Sarah received us into the living room after we rang the doorbell. And right there, balanced securely on her hip, was Arthur.

"Mama!" Arthur squeaked, his little arms instantly reaching out toward me.
A tear dropped from my eye as I rushed forward, snatching my little boy into my arms. He felt heavier, bigger, and so incredibly alive.

Edward was right behind me, wrapping his large arms around both of us.
"He’s been a perfect little angel," Sarah said, wiping a tear from her own eye as she watched us. "Mark and I made sure he didn't lack anything. But he definitely missed his mom and dad."

Mark walked into the living room, his hands in his pockets, looking relaxed for the first time since this entire nightmare began. "Everything is clear, sir. Your documents and your tickets are entirely secure. You’re clear to fly."

Edward stepped away from the hug to shake Mark’s hand firmly, then turned to give Sarah a warm hug. "We can never thank you two enough for everything. You helped save our family."

"Just go live a good life, Edward," Mark said with a genuine smile. "You’ve earned it."
We didn't waste any time. With our bags packed and our hearts full, we drove straight to the airport and boarded the next available flight to England. As the airplane wheels left the tarmac and the familiar landscape below shrank into tiny dots, I felt a physical shift inside my body. The dark, suffocating shadow of the Vance family drama was finally left behind. We were flying toward a blank slate.

Two years passed like a beautiful, fast-moving river.
Settling into England was easier than I had ever imagined. We chose a beautiful, historic town just outside of London, where the streets were lined with old brick buildings and lush, green parks. The air felt fresh, and the pace of life was perfectly calm.

Edward didn't waste any time wallowing in the past. With his brilliant legal mind and the clean financial assets transferred from the neutral trust, he set up a brand-new law firm right in the heart of the city. He worked hard, building a reputation based on honesty and fierce protection of his clients. Within eighteen months, his firm was thriving, attracting major clients from all over the country.

But I didn't want to just sit back and watch him build a future. I wanted to be an equal part of it.
Shortly after we arrived, I made a big decision. I went back to school. I registered for a rigorous two-year program at a prestigious local business school. Going back to classrooms and studying spreadsheets after everything I had been through was challenging, but it was also incredibly empowering.

Today was graduation day.
I stood in front of the mirror in our bedroom, adjusting the dark blue graduation gown over my shoulders. Edward walked in, looking sharp in a tailored gray suit. He walked up behind me, placing his hands on my waist and leaning down to kiss my cheek.

"You look absolutely stunning, Partner," he whispered, a proud gleam in his eyes.
I smiled, turning around to fix his silk tie. "Partner? Is it official then? You're not worried I'm going to take over your entire firm?"

Edward laughed, "I am counting on it. The paperwork is already finalized at the office. Starting Monday, the sign on the door officially reads Vance & Vance Legal Consultants. I handle the courtrooms, and you handle the business operations, finances, and expansion. We are a team, Serena. In every single way."

"A team," I repeated, the word sounding like music to my ears. "I like the sound of that."
We walked downstairs together, where Sarah was waiting in the living room with Arthur. Sarah had moved to England with us to help manage our home and look after Arthur while we worked and studied, becoming an indispensable part of our new life.

"Look at your beautiful mommy, Arthur!" Sarah said, holding his hand.
Arthur, who was now a walking, talking, energetic toddler, clapped his chubby hands together. "Mommy pretty! Go cap and gown!"

I knelt down and caught him as he ran into my arms, lifting him up. He was growing so strong, healthy, and full of joy. Looking into his bright, innocent eyes, I knew that every single tear we had shed, every dark night we had survived, was completely worth it. He would grow up knowing nothing but love, safety, and peace.

Later that evening, after a wonderful graduation dinner with a few close friends from the business school, the house finally went quiet. Arthur was fast asleep in his bedroom, exhausted from a day of running around and celebrating.

Edward and I walked out to the large stone balcony attached to our master bedroom. The English countryside stretched out before us, a breathtaking view of rolling green hills, distant twinkling cottage lights, and a sky painted in deep velvet purple, dotted with thousands of bright stars. The cool evening breeze moved around us, carrying the scent of fresh rain and blooming lavender.

Edward wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling my back firmly against his chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder.
"Look at this view," Edward said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "Two years ago, I didn't think a night like this was even possible. I thought we would be looking over our shoulders for the rest of our lives."

"We made it, Edward," I whispered, covering his warm hands with my own.
"I love you so much, Serena," he said, tightening his grip slightly, as if reminding himself that I was truly here, safe and real.

I smiled, my heart swelling with a joy so profound it almost made me dizzy. I turned around slowly within his arms, placing my hands flat against his chest. I looked up into his eyes, loving the peace I saw reflecting back at me.

"Edward," I said softly.
"Yes, darling?"
I took one of his large, warm hands and slowly moved it down away from his chest, placing it gently over my flat stomach. Edward froze, his eyes widening as he felt the deliberate placement of his hand.

"I think our team is about to get a little bit bigger," I whispered, my eyes shining with happy tears. "We are expecting baby number two."
Edward stared at me for a second. He just scooped me up into his arms, lifting me off the balcony floor and spinning me around under the starry sky, laughing with pure  joy.

As he set me down and kissed me passionately, I looked out over the beautiful, endless view. The past was finally gone and our new story was just beginning.
