The sound of birds at dawn tried to bring a sense of normalcy to that temporary refuge, but inside the house, the atmosphere was far from peaceful. Marcelo was in the kitchen, calmly preparing coffee as if he were the most relaxed person in the world, while Clara and Evelyn quietly discussed the next steps in the living room. I sat outside on the small porch, trying to absorb everything.
Marcelo’s presence, while helpful, had shifted something between Clara and me. I couldn’t stop thinking about how well he seemed to know her, the familiarity in their looks and comments. It was as if he understood parts of her that were still a mystery to me.
“Can I sit here?” Marcelo’s voice interrupted my thoughts. I turned and saw him standing there, two cups of coffee in his hands. Without waiting for an answer, he handed me one and sat down beside me.
“You didn’t have to,” I murmured, accepting the cup nonetheless.
“You seem to have a lot on your mind,” he remarked, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees, looking straight ahead. “Not surprising, considering everything that’s happening.”
“That’s what happens when your life is turned upside down,” I retorted, unable to hide my irritation.
Marcelo smiled, but it wasn’t arrogant. There was something genuine in his expression that caught me off guard. “If it’s any consolation, you’re handling it better than most people would.”
“You don’t know me,” I replied quickly.
“Not directly,” he admitted, glancing at me sideways. “But I know Clara. And I can see how much she cares about you.”
That took me by surprise. “What do you mean by that?”
“I mean that if you’re feeling insecure, you shouldn’t. Clara isn’t the kind of person who makes empty promises, and everything I see in her is concern and… something deeper for you.”
I didn’t know how to respond. Part of me wanted to thank him, but another part resented the idea that he understood Clara in ways I might not. Before I could say anything, he stood up, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
Later, when I walked back into the house, I heard Clara and Marcelo talking in the kitchen. The door was slightly ajar, and for a moment, I hesitated before entering. I didn’t want to eavesdrop, but their voices were clear enough for me to catch parts of their conversation.
“Do you trust her?” Marcelo asked, his voice calm but tinged with a curiosity that seemed more personal than professional.
“More than I trust myself,” Clara replied without hesitation. “And it’s not your place to question that.”
“I’m not questioning it,” Marcelo said. “I’m just trying to understand how much you’re willing to risk for her.”
“Everything,” Clara replied, and there was a firmness in her voice that warmed my heart, even though I was still wrestling with my insecurities.
When I finally entered, Clara saw me and immediately stopped talking. Marcelo took a step back, grabbed his cup of coffee, and left the kitchen with a casual nod, leaving us alone.
“Is everything okay?” Clara asked, but the tone in her voice indicated she already knew something was wrong.
“I’m not sure,” I admitted, crossing my arms. “Why didn’t you tell me about Marcelo before? About how close you two were?”
Clara sighed, leaning against the counter. “Because I didn’t think it was relevant. Marcelo and I worked together, yes, and we were partners in some tough situations. But that was in the past, Bela. He doesn’t mean anything compared to what you mean to me.”
“But he knows parts of you that I don’t,” I retorted, trying to keep my voice steady. “And that makes me feel insecure.”
Clara took a step closer, taking my hands in hers. “You know me in ways no one else does,” she said softly. “With you, I can be vulnerable. I can be myself. And that’s something I’ve never had with anyone—not even Marcelo.”
“Then why does he seem so at ease around you?” I asked, unable to hide the jealousy in my voice.
“Because he likes to provoke,” Clara replied with a slight smile. “And maybe he’s testing you, the way he always tested people around me. But don’t let him make you doubt what we have.”
The warmth in Clara’s gaze and the firmness in her words were enough to ease some of the weight on my chest. Still, the jealousy lingered in the background, a reminder that there was much I needed to resolve within myself.
That night, as everyone was preparing for bed, Clara came to the room where I was. She didn’t say anything at first, just sat beside me on the bed. I looked at her, waiting for her to break the silence.
“I don’t want you to feel this way,” Clara finally said, her voice filled with sincerity. “If there’s anything I can do to prove how much you mean to me, just tell me.”
I didn’t know what to say. Finally, I sighed and rested my head on her shoulder. “Maybe I just need time,” I murmured.
“I can give you that,” Clara replied, gently running her fingers through my hair. “But know that, for me, you’re what matters. Not Marcelo. Not the past. Just you.”
I turned to her, and our eyes met. The desire and emotion were clear in hers, and before I could hesitate, I leaned in and kissed her. The kiss was more intense than any before, charged with everything I was feeling: fear, love, insecurity, and, above all, hope.
Clara responded to the kiss with the same intensity, her hands holding my face gently but firmly. When we pulled apart, we were both breathless, but there was a newfound clarity between us.
“You make me want to be brave,” I said, my voice low but steady.
“You already are,” Clara replied, a soft smile spreading across her lips.
The next morning, as the group discussed the next steps, Evelyn burst into the room with a worried expression. She was holding her laptop and pointed to the screen.
“We have a problem,” she announced. “Richard is moving, and it looks like he already knows where we are.”
Clara immediately went on high alert, her expression hardening. “How much time do we have?”
“Not much,” Evelyn replied. “He’s coming. And this time, he’s not alone.”
The tension in the room grew, and everyone began preparing. But as urgent as the situation was, I knew Clara and I were more connected than ever, ready to face whatever came next together.
