Chapter 9
LILY’S POV
Samuel followed me, watching me with a puzzled expression. We found a more secluded spot, away from the curious glances of the guests, and I stopped, facing him directly. Finally, I was the one to break the silence.
“How did this happen? How are you Samantha's son?” I asked, my tone laden with bewilderment.
He sighed, running a hand through his tousled hair.
“It was as surprising a revelation to me as it is to you. I found out not long ago. They decided to merge their lives, and here we are, the result of this unexpected union.”
My mind was spinning, trying to grasp the complexity of this new family dynamic. I nodded, still trying to process.
“So, we're siblings now.”
“In a way, yes,” he replied, his expression softening. “Although we've done things I probably wouldn't do with my sister.”
My emotions were in turmoil. The irony of the situation was overwhelming. I, who sought to escape family dramas, was now at the epicenter of a twist I could never have imagined.
“You could have told me earlier... before...” I hesitated, not wanting to verbalize the night we shared.
He nodded understandingly. “I know, Lily. And I'm sorry for that. I didn't anticipate the situation taking this turn.”
For a moment, we stood in silence, absorbing the magnitude of the revelation that had just occurred. Our lives had suddenly become even more intertwined than we could have ever imagined.
“What does this mean for us?” I asked, unsure of what to expect.
Samuel sighed, his expression reflecting a mix of emotions. He approached slowly, his gaze locked on me with unsettling intensity.
“We can be whatever you want, Lily,” he murmured softly, his voice tinged with seduction.
I instinctively backed away, feeling my heart race at his proximity.
“No, Samuel,” I replied firmly, trying to contain the swirling emotions threatening to consume me. “From now on, we'll only be what this marriage has made us: step-siblings.”
His eyes narrowed, his expression serious.
“Are you sure about that?” he asked, his voice carrying a challenging tone.
“Yes,” I declared firmly, knowing that this was the best decision for the sake of our family. “And we'll never speak of that night we were together again.”
A mischievous smile played on Samuel's lips.
“More than one night, Lily,” he recalled with a teasing expression. “Including the last one, which was last night. If I were to count how many times we did it within these two nights...”
My heart skipped in my chest, but I refused to succumb to his provocation.
“It doesn't matter,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. “It won't happen again.”
He stared at me for a moment, his eyes studying me with a piercing gaze.
“Are you sure about that, Lily?” he asked again, his voice tinged with a dark suggestion.
“Yes, I am,” I replied, trying to keep my voice as firm as I could in front of him. “For the sake of the family, it's better this way. And you better behave.”
A sarcastic smile curved Samuel's lips.
“Just two hours since Doug and Samantha tied the knot, and you're already acting like a nagging little sister,” he mocked.
I glared at him, feeling a mix of anger and frustration bubbling inside me.
“And you're not the brother I asked my father for,” I retorted with equal sarcasm, “but it seems I'll have to accept.”
At that moment, Samantha approached, interrupting our exchange of words.
“I need to talk to you, Samuel. Alone,” she said, her tone serious suggesting that something important was about to be said.
Samuel gave me one last look before stepping away with Samantha, leaving me alone with my thoughts. As I watched them walk away, my heart still pulsed with the intensity of the conversation that had just taken place. The complicated dynamic between me and Samuel was far from resolved, but for now, I was determined to stick to my decision and protect the fragile family unity that had just formed.

SAMUEL'S POV
The garden of my mother Samantha's house was bathed in the soft light of dusk, creating a serene atmosphere that contrasted with the tension I felt within me. As I watched the guests at the wedding reception enjoy themselves, we drifted away to a secluded corner, where I could have a moment of tranquility.
“What do you want now, Mom?” I asked, trying to mask my own restlessness.
She looked at me, a shadow of concern passing through her eyes.
“What were you talking about with Lily, Doug's daughter?” she asked, her voice tinged with curiosity and apprehension.
I turned to face her, feeling the weight of her question.
“We were talking about not sleeping together now that we're siblings,” I replied bluntly, turning the beer bottle in my hands.
Samantha rolled her eyes at me.
“Can't you be serious for a moment, Samuel?” she asked, her voice laden with frustration.
I stared at her, feeling misunderstood.
“What do you want from me, Mom? I'm here at your wedding with the guy I hate, acting like a good son, and it still seems like it's not enough,” I retorted, my voice heavy with resentment.
She took hold of my arm, a gesture of affection mixed with discomfort.
“I'm sorry if I'm being defensive, but after our last fight, I thought you might be planning something,” she explained, her voice softening with maternal concern.
“As you can see, I haven't done anything,” I replied, trying to contain my irritation at her unfounded suspicions.
Samantha looked at me with a grateful look. “I'm glad for that,” she admitted, her voice gentle. “I'm glad you're here on the most important day of my life.”
I looked at her seriously. “So, what do you want, after all?” I asked, wanting to understand the reason for her approach.
She looked back at me, awkwardly. “As soon as the reception is over, Doug and I are leaving for our honeymoon. I need to know if you can stay at home and be nice to Lily,” she explained, her voice tinged with anxiety.
I blinked, processing the information. “Lily is staying here at the house?” I asked, surprised by the revelation.
Samantha looked at me, her expression indicating that this was an inevitable consequence of the marriage.
“Yes, now Lily and her father are going to live with us. And I need to know if it's okay with you,” she explained, her voice laden with expectation.
I pondered for a moment, before finally replying:
“Of course, Mom,” I said, trying to sound casual. “I'll be happy to spend time with Lily while you're away.”
Samantha looked at me with gratitude. “That means a lot to me, Samuel,” she said, squeezing my arm affectionately.
I smiled at her, trying to appear carefree, while inwardly thanking for the opportunity to spend more time with Lily. This marriage might not have been so bad after all.
