Chapter 183 Collapsing onto Ambrose
Scarlett grabbed the car door with one hand and wouldn't let go. No matter how hard Ulysses pulled from inside the car, she held on tight. Seeing this, Ulysses's men came forward to pry her fingers off.
In desperation, Scarlett changed tactics and shouted, "Let go, I'll get in myself."
Hearing this, Ulysses laughed, "If you'd done this earlier, we wouldn't have had to struggle. Better for everyone."
With that, he released Scarlett's hand.
Free at last, Scarlett shook out her hand, then glared at the men who had tried to pry her fingers loose. They quickly stepped back.
Only then did Scarlett straighten up and look at Ulysses in the car, throwing out a line, "Mr. Mitchell, it's not impossible for me to be with you, but what can you give me?"
Ulysses froze for two seconds, then gave a scornful laugh. "Looks like you're nothing special after all. The Mellon family's precious daughter has fallen to this level—truly sad!"
Scarlett smiled faintly. "I have no choice. Since I can't escape, I might as well get what I want. That's what matters."
Ulysses smiled lightly. "What do you want?"
Scarlett's eyes turned cold. "Didn't you say you have evidence that proves my father's innocence? Give it to me, and I'll be with you."
Ulysses leaned back in his seat, crossed his legs, looking completely relaxed. "I knew you'd ask for this."
"But things have changed. If you'd agreed to be with me back then, I could have given it to you. Now you're not worth that price anymore."
Scarlett raised an eyebrow, not rushing. "If we can't make a deal, I won't be with you. And if you dare force yourself on me today, I can report you. I may not have much power now, but I still have connections."
Owen had fallen, but his network hadn't completely disappeared. Ulysses could guess this.
He leaned back in his seat, his eyes without glasses glowing with a greenish light like a poisonous snake, observing his prey. After a long while, he finally spoke.
"Looks like Ms. Mellon is more interesting than other women. Your fearlessness is quite attractive. Fine, I'll give it to you."
Scarlett crossed her arms. "Since you agree, let's exchange at the same time."
"I haven't even touched you yet, and you want the goods already? Do you think I'm stupid?"
"You have many people, I'm alone. If I don't get the evidence first, I won't feel safe. After all, if you get what you want and then refuse to give it to me, what can I do about it?"
Scarlett's attitude was firm—if he didn't give her the evidence, she wouldn't let him touch her.
Today Scarlett wore a business suit. Her slender figure, wrapped in the fitted clothes, showed her graceful curves. Combined with her unique temperament, it made her face even more vivid and radiant.
Ulysses was tempted by Scarlett's appearance, his eyes constantly roaming over her. After thinking for a long time, he said, "Fine, I can give it to you first, but I don't have the evidence on me right now."
Scarlett wasn't in a hurry. "I'll wait for you to get it. Once you bring it and I confirm it's evidence that helps my dad and can clear him of suspicion, I won't go back on my word."
At these words, Ulysses immediately became restless, staring at her intently.
"What if you're playing me?"
Scarlett said calmly, "I have no backing now. How could I escape your control?"
This flattery suited Ulysses just fine. He nodded. "Then give me a deposit now."
A deposit?
Scarlett guessed what he meant, but she smiled mysteriously, a charming smile. She leaned her head into the car and beckoned to him with her finger.
Ulysses leaned forward with interest, wanting to see what Scarlett would do. But unexpectedly, Scarlett grabbed his collar. "Mr. Mitchell, here's your deposit."
With that, she blew softly near his ear.
A tingling sensation spread from his ear throughout his body. Ulysses leaned in to try to kiss Scarlett forcefully, but she reacted quickly, pulling back so he couldn't reach her.
"If you let me kiss you once, I'll believe you," Ulysses said with a meaningful smile.
Scarlett, now outside the car, stood at the door, not knowing what to do, when suddenly a car drove up fast. It stopped abruptly in front of them. As the window rolled down, a face wearing sunglasses with a roguish air appeared before everyone.
"Mr. Mitchell, instead of attending the groundbreaking ceremony, what are you doing here?"
It was Ruben.
Seeing it was Ruben, Scarlett secretly breathed a sigh of relief and turned to look at him.
Ruben's eyes behind the sunglasses looked at Scarlett, pretending to be surprised. "Ms. Mellon, what are you doing here? They were just looking for you back there."
Scarlett feigned surprise. "They were looking for me? Then I'll go back now."
With that, Scarlett looked at Ulysses. "Mr. Mitchell, I'll be going."
With Ruben present, Ulysses naturally didn't dare press Scarlett for a kiss. He raised his hand, indicating she could leave, saying only one thing.
"We'll be in touch by phone."
Scarlett didn't respond and walked away.
"Mr. Mitchell, are you planning to go back?" Ruben sat in his car, deliberately making conversation.
"I'm about to leave." Ulysses put his glasses back on and got out of the car.
"I heard you're setting up a capital group. Do you still need partners?" Ruben flashed his white teeth, looking quite cocky.
Ulysses looked at Ruben and smiled mysteriously.
"Mr. Lawson, regulations say public officials can't do business."
"Mr. Mitchell, everyone's making moves behind the scenes. One more person won't matter." After saying this, Ruben added, "But don't tell your uncle. If you do, we'll all be in trouble."
"Why would I mention these things?" Ulysses laughed, deliberately testing him. "Do you really want to join?"
Ruben smiled. "Would I lie? You're already working with Ambrose. We can work together too."
Ulysses raised an eyebrow. "Since Mr. Lawson wants to join, I naturally won't refuse. Let's find a time to discuss the specific projects, shall we?"
Ruben readily agreed. "Sure, let's set a time."
Having gotten his foot in the door, Ruben left. Ulysses stood there, watching the departing car, his eyes dark.
"Mr. Mitchell, letting Ruben join isn't a good idea. What if he..."
"Ambrose is already willing to cooperate. Ruben isn't a big problem. Just don't let him access core content. Besides, having Ruben involved actually makes our fundraising safer." Ulysses said.
Scarlett returned to the scene, and Briar grabbed her, saying with complete disdain, "You didn't see it just now—that Octavia pretended to fall onto Ambrose. I almost threw up from disgust."
Scarlett hadn't been paying much attention, but hearing this, she paused, "In front of everyone?"
"Of course. The media all rushed to photograph it. I guess their engaged status just got more proof."
Scarlett lowered her eyes, lost in thought.
