Chapter 146 Her Decision
Ambrose let out a cold laugh. "They're really living in a fantasy."
Cody pressed his lips tight, his face cold and stern, echoing his sentiment, "There's no way the Boleyn family's child would be given to the Mitchell family. If the Mitchell family wanted the child back then, they shouldn't have sent him back to the Boleyn family. We raised this child - what right do they have to try and take him now?"
After making his position clear, Cody turned on him.
"But you've handled things wrong these past few years too. Since the child was already born, why hide it? Now look at this mess - it's like we're the ones in the wrong."
Ambrose settled leisurely onto a nearby sofa, crossing his legs, and said darkly, "I never planned to have any ties with Octavia. Telling people would just cause trouble. Besides, I offered her compensation back then, and she refused - so she can't blame anyone."
Ambrose's words made Cody glare at him again. "Even if you didn't want to marry her, you should have told her parents - that would have been the right thing to do!"
"Now look what's happened, you've turned a situation where we had the moral high ground into one where we're in the wrong. Indigo isn't an ordinary person. If you don't show some kind of attitude, he won't let this go, and the Boleyn Group will face a lot of trouble."
Ambrose glanced over at him. "Grandpa, are you scared?"
Cody's eyes widened again as he puffed out his chest. "What do I have to be scared of?"
A slight smile played at Ambrose's lips as he leaned back against the sofa. "You don't need to worry about this. I'll handle them."
"Handling them is one thing, but you still need to show Indigo some respect." Cody paused.
"Actually, I think given Hayden's situation, he needs a stable family."
Ambrose caught a whiff of something suspicious. He narrowed his eyes, studying Cody, but responded casually, "He has no feelings for Octavia. The moment he hears about going to her, he cries and throws a fit."
"That's because they haven't spent time together. Mother and son share a blood bond - once they spend more time together, they'll naturally grow close. Octavia from the Mitchell family has health issues and will have trouble having more children in the future. He's her only child, so she'll definitely treat him well."
Ambrose turned his head, his gaze slightly cold, making his position clear.
"I'd advise you not to entertain those unrealistic ideas. I will never marry Octavia."
"If you won't marry Octavia, are you planning to marry that young lady from the Mellon family?" Cody's response came smoothly, his eyes fixed unblinkingly on Ambrose, not missing a single expression on his face.
Ambrose didn't respond immediately, just met Cody's gaze, seeing through the probing in his eyes. He let out a light laugh.
"That won't happen either. As you know, she and I just have some business ties for now, nothing close to wanting to marry her."
Cody snorted coldly. "You'd better mean that. Don't take what I said last time lightly." At this point, something seemed to occur to him. "I heard she stayed at Silver Oak Heights last night, and today she even brought her daughter over?"
Ambrose raised an eyebrow. "Your information network is really something. Yes, she's staying at Silver Oak Heights, but that's because Hayden got sick. He absolutely refused to let her go, clinging to her desperately. I had no choice but to have her stay for a few days. Her daughter is there to keep Hayden company."
Cody knew he could always come up with all sorts of reasons, and didn't bother arguing further. He just said, "Keep Hayden away from her. She already has a child of her own, so she knows exactly how to manipulate kids. Hayden is so young - who knows if she might trick him."
"Send Hayden to spend more time with his real mother!"
Ambrose laughed coldly. "And after spending more time together, are you planning to send him to be raised by the Mitchell family?"
"What are you saying?" Cody's eyes widened in anger again.
The two of them always ended up arguing. Cody didn't want to fight with him, so he backed down a step.
"For now, let's figure out how to deal with the Mitchell family. I was thinking, Saturday evening, the two families could meet and discuss a strategy."
Ambrose stood up. "Meeting or not won't change anything, but if you think we really need to meet, then let's meet."
"If there's nothing else, I'm going to get back to work. The company has a pile of things to deal with." With that, he headed for the door.
Cody watched him go, fuming, sighing and slapping his leg. "What a troublesome bastard."
The Mitchell family was trying to win over the Boleyn family, which is why they brought up the child at this time. Octavia from the Mitchell family was no simple woman.
After sitting for a while, Cody left Ambrose's office. When he reached the conference room, it was during a break. Scarlett walked out and, seeing Cody at the door, nodded to him and prepared to leave.
"Ms. Mellon, wait a moment." Cody called out to her.
Scarlett stopped, her face calm as she nodded to him. "Mr. Cody Boleyn, what is it?"
Cody looked around, didn't see Ambrose, and gestured to the side, indicating he wanted to speak privately.
Scarlett followed him to a quiet corner, where Cody said, "Thank you for taking care of Hayden during this time, but his mother is back now, so we can't keep troubling you. After all, you have your own child to look after."
Scarlett understood Cody was telling her to stay away from Ambrose and his son. Coincidentally, that was exactly what she was thinking. She smiled slightly.
"I understand what you mean. Don't worry, I'll do as you suggest."
Cody was momentarily stunned by her quick agreement, staring at her, trying to see if she was being sincere.
Her bright eyes were full of openness and clarity, completely straightforward without a hint of insincerity. It made him feel petty instead. Cody felt a bit awkward and coughed twice.
"Mr. Cody Boleyn, if there's nothing else, I'll get back to work." Scarlett was polite, but her tone was distant.
Cody had nothing else to say, so he just nodded and watched her turn and leave. Looking at her cold, retreating figure, Cody sighed again.
What a shame.
After Cody's words, Scarlett's mood wasn't affected at all. She still completed the rest of the meeting. As she left the conference room, heading back to the design department, Ambrose called out to her.
She followed him back to his office. As soon as they entered, he asked, "What did Grandpa say to you just now?"
Scarlett looked at him with deep eyes, and after a long moment said, "Nothing much, just small talk."
She didn't plan to tell him. If she did, he would confront Cody, and things would only get more complicated. She smiled. "If there's nothing else, I'll get back to work."
Ambrose said nothing, but pulled her into his arms, lowering his head to breathe in her scent.
"No matter what happens in the future, whatever you see, you have to trust me."
Scarlett's body stiffened. Though she didn't understand why he was saying this, she guessed it was probably about Octavia's return.
But none of that had anything to do with her anymore. She took the opportunity to say, "Ambrose, I won't keep staying at your place, but I'll let Yara stay there for a while to keep Hayden company. Once Hayden gets used to things, I'll bring Yara back home."
