Chapter 98
"Miss Brown, we've found what you asked us to investigate - information about the child's biological father."
A call came from an unknown number.
Victoria instantly got excited. "Who is it?!"
"Transfer the remaining payment to us, and we'll send you the information right away." The voice on the other end was cold and calm. "This isn't our first time working together. Miss Brown should know how this works."
Victoria gripped her phone tightly.
Where would she get the money now?!
After being fired from Glacier Corp, her life had been rough!
"Just tell me the child's father's name first."
"Once the payment arrives, we'll send you everything you want to know. Until then, no comment." With that, the other party hung up directly.
"This is infuriating!" Victoria cursed, her eyes landing on a stray cat leisurely passing by.
She narrowed her eyes, grabbed a stone, and hurled it viciously at the cat!
Her movement was too quick. The small cat couldn't react in time and was immediately bloodied.
The cat let out a painful cry and fled quickly.
Victoria didn't catch up, muttering a few more curses under her breath.
……
As soon as I entered the company, I noticed my colleagues were being unusually enthusiastic toward me.
"Ms. Wilson, good morning."
"Ms. Wilson, you look even more beautiful today."
"Ms. Wilson..."
Helplessly, I could only smile and greet them back.
From the entrance to the elevator, my face was practically frozen from smiling.
The thing was, I barely knew these people, and we had no work relationship.
Brian happened to walk into the elevator at the same time. Looking at me teasingly, he said, "Ms. Wilson, you're even more popular than me now. You're the center of attention in our company."
I replied helplessly, "I'd rather be invisible."
Now, no matter where I went, people would stare at me.
It made me feel less like a person and more like a monkey in a circus.
The elevator doors closed. Brian didn't look at me, just said, "That's not very likely anymore. Once you're connected to Jason, more and more eyes will be on you. Plenty of people will want to curry favor with you. At the same time, plenty will see you as a thorn in their side."
I calmly stared at the rising numbers on the elevator display and said, "Yeah, maybe that's the price of fame."
Hearing this, Brian finally turned his head and looked at me deeply.
He opened his mouth, but in the end, said nothing.
The elevator arrived, and Brian left first.
I also strode toward my workstation.
To avoid being surrounded by colleagues as soon as I arrived, I assigned each of them some work before they could speak.
It was almost lunchtime.
The elevator doors suddenly opened, and a figure stepped out.
I looked up to see Elizabeth, with perfect makeup and even styled hair, walking in.
She quickly headed toward Brian's office.
A colleague instinctively looked at me. I gently shook my head.
The colleague quickly stepped forward and said helplessly in a soft voice, "I'm sorry, Miss Perez, if you're here to see Mr. Ethan, please wait a moment. We need to notify him first."
Elizabeth frowned, clearly displeased. "I'm Brian's fiancée. Do I really need to be announced?"
"Yes, please cooperate with our work. Mr. Ethan is currently handling documents and doesn't want to be disturbed by anyone," the colleague said helplessly.
Only then did Elizabeth's expression soften a bit. "True, if I just barge in and Brian gets upset, that wouldn't be good. Then hurry up. I especially made a restaurant reservation to have lunch with Brian!"
"Alright, thank you for your understanding!"
The colleague quickly entered the office.
I withdrew my gaze and focused on the last bit of work at hand.
Elizabeth had just splashed water all over me last time.
She saw me as a rival. If I went up to stop Elizabeth, I'd probably face a meaningless argument.
The colleague came out quickly, wearing a polite smile. "Miss Perez, please go in."
Elizabeth nodded, her eyes sweeping over me with contempt before she walked in on her stilettos, saying, "Brian."
That coquettish voice...
I raised my hand to rub the goosebumps on my arm.
The office door closed, completely blocking out Elizabeth's voice.
Before long, the door opened again.
Brian walked out first with long strides and an expressionless face. Elizabeth chased after him, still calling out, "Brian, slow down. I'm wearing heels and can't walk fast..."
With the boss gone, colleagues gradually stood up to go for lunch.
"Ms. Wilson, want to join us?" asked the colleague who had stopped Elizabeth earlier.
I stared at the unfinished work on my computer screen and shook my head. "You guys go ahead. I'll just grab something quick later."
"Alright then." The two walked off arm in arm.
They left, but their gossip drifted over.
"Ms. Wilson really is unique."
"So what? Ms. Wilson is Jason's lover. I used to wonder why Ms. Wilson wasn't interested in Mr. Ethan. Turns out she had a better option."
"I'd choose Jason too."
I pretended not to hear the gossip.
To me, these words meant nothing.
I had just finished my work temporarily and was getting ready to go downstairs when Jason's message came through.
Jason: [I'm downstairs at your company. When are you coming down?]
Remembering how conspicuous he was last time, I felt nervous.
Sue: [Coming right away. Park farther away and wait for me.]
Jason: [No way. I'm right at the company entrance.]
I quickly picked up my pace. The elevator had just reached the first floor, and before the doors were even halfway open, I anxiously rushed out.
From a distance, I could see Jason's car parked by the roadside.
Still that silver sports car.
I immediately got in, and while fastening my seatbelt, I couldn't help but urge, "Let's go! People will see us again!"
Jason looked at me with an amused expression and teased, "The way you're talking, it's like we're having an affair."
Even as he said this, his hands didn't stop moving, and the sports car instantly started and drove away.
Only after we were far from the company did I breathe a sigh of relief. "Wake up. We're just exes now."
"We'll be current soon enough."
Jason seemed to be in a particularly good mood today. While driving, he was even humming a tune.
I glanced at him and didn't bother wasting words on this topic.
The restaurant was one we'd been to before - Charles's restaurant.
Charles wasn't there today. A server led us to Jason's private room.
After the dishes were served, Jason took the initiative to peel shrimp and put the meat in my bowl.
Looking at the shrimp, I suddenly frowned.
"You still have a cold. You shouldn't eat seafood."
"I'm not eating it. You love it, so all of this is prepared for you."
Jason smiled and said, "Sue, I'm really happy that you care about me."
