Chapter 66
Jessica didn't answer right away. Instead, she tilted her head and blinked at me.
She watched me scrubbing the coffee stain on my clothes carefully, then suddenly said, "That person was really rude."
My hands stopped scrubbing. I cautiously turned to look at Jessica.
Did she figure something out?
My feelings were all mixed up.
All I could think about was how I should tell Jessica about this.
My grip on the clothes tightened.
A few days ago, Elizabeth splashed water on me, and today Victoria spilled coffee on me.
How annoying!
What did I ever do to anyone?
"Well, everyone's pretty busy. They were in a rush and didn't see me, so we bumped into each other." I thought for a moment and came up with an explanation.
Luckily, Jessica didn't ask more questions.
I scrubbed hard for a long time, but the coffee stain on the white shirt was still obvious.
I stared at the stain for a while and sighed. I left the shirt soaking and went into the kitchen to make dinner.
Just as I put the food on the table, someone knocked on the door.
Who could it be at this hour?
While I was thinking, Jessica had already run to open the door.
"Uncle!" Jessica's excited voice made me look up, and I met Jason's smiling eyes.
My heart immediately started beating wildly.
I pressed my lips together tightly, forcing myself to calm my racing heartbeat, and asked as calmly as possible, "Why are you here?"
"My business trip ended, so I came back." Jason's eyes swept over the dining table, and he raised his eyebrows. "Looks like I came back at just the right time."
"I didn't make food for you." I refused without giving him any face.
Jason put on slippers on his own and handed a bag to Jessica. "Jessica, this is a gift for you."
Jessica smiled and took it. When she opened it, she immediately cheered with delight, "It's paintbrushes! Thank you! I love them!"
I stood up and walked toward the kitchen, saying, "I didn't know you were coming. If you don't have enough to eat, there's nothing I can do about it."
"Then I'll call ahead next time," Jason said.
Is that what I meant?
Wasn't I saying he shouldn't come next time?
When I came out with a bowl, Jason handed me another bag. "This is for you."
"I don't want it." I refused directly.
The gift for Jessica could be explained as a father giving something to his daughter, but what about giving me something?
What's our relationship anyway?
Bringing me back a gift from a business trip—doesn't he think that's too intimate?
Jason looked at me and put the bag on the coffee table. "Anyway, I'm leaving it here. If you don't want it, you can throw it away yourself."
I was about to say something when he added, "I never take back things I've given away."
After saying that, he smiled again and carried Jessica to the dining table.
Since I hadn't expected Jason to come over for dinner, tonight's meal only had three dishes, but it was enough.
After dinner, Jason offered to wash the dishes.
Before I could say anything, Jessica blinked and asked curiously, "Can you really wash dishes?"
Jason glanced at Jessica and nodded confidently. "Of course."
Since he was helping me with chores, I naturally had no objections.
Passing through the living room, my eyes fell on the bag Jason had brought.
I moved the bag to the shoe cabinet by the door.
When Jason was about to leave, I'd give him the bag so he wouldn't forget it.
The white shirt had been soaking for a long time. I scrubbed it hard for ages, but the coffee stain was stubborn—no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't wash it clean.
I looked at the shirt with heartache.
I really liked this white shirt.
It was affordable and fit perfectly.
After being stained with coffee, I couldn't wear it anymore.
Buying new clothes would be another expense.
This was an expense that could have been avoided.
I sighed softly and put the shirt back to soak.
The kitchen should be almost cleaned up by now. I walked toward the kitchen.
As soon as I opened the kitchen door, I found myself face-to-face with Jason standing in a pile of bubbles.
The kitchen floor was covered in foam, and the smell of dish soap was overwhelming.
My lips moved. I tried to hold back, tried again, but finally couldn't help myself. "How much dish soap did you use?"
"Actually, not that much, just about half a bottle." Jason looked even more troubled than me. "But I didn't expect it would create this many bubbles."
Before I could speak, Jason hung his head and said quietly, "Sorry, don't be mad. I'll figure out how to clean it up."
His voice was low, with a pitiful, pleading tone, like a sad puppy.
I walked past Jason and went downstairs with the kitchen trash.
While waiting for the elevator to come down, I couldn't help but picture Jason frantically dealing with the mess in the kitchen.
I never thought that after we reunited, I'd actually get to see Jason in such an embarrassing state.
After throwing out the trash and coming back upstairs, I heard sounds from the kitchen, but didn't go check. Instead, I went straight to the bathroom to shower.
I still had to work tomorrow.
After my shower, I came out feeling fresh and clean. I was about to check on the kitchen situation when I unexpectedly bumped into Jason's solid chest.
Jason was somehow standing at the bathroom door.
He naturally wrapped his arm around my waist and asked, "Why so affectionate all of a sudden?"
I quickly pulled away from his embrace, stepped back two paces, and kept my distance warily. "What are you doing standing at the bathroom door?"
Jason blinked, looking rather innocent. "I finished cleaning the kitchen and came to tell you."
I didn't believe Jason was there by accident.
"Shouldn't you praise me now?" Jason took a step forward, his deep eyes staring straight at me.
I quickly said, "You cleaned up the kitchen so fast, you're amazing!"
He was threatening me.
But I had no way to deal with him right now.
Why didn't he mention how the kitchen got that way in the first place?!
Only then was Jason satisfied and stopped.
But his eyes were still fixed on me.
His stare made me uncomfortable all over. I said, "I'm going back to my room!"
Without giving Jason a chance to speak, I went straight back to the bedroom.
Thinking Jason must have left by now, I gently pushed open the door.
