Chapter 257
Cora's eyes widened. "That much?"
Although Luke had borrowed from high-interest online lenders, it hadn't reached the point of doubling in just a few days. He was just fed up with this penniless life.
So Luke had no choice but to nod, "Yes, Mom, I know what I did was wrong, but I really had no other choice! You already fainted from anger before, I couldn't just stand by and watch Sue harm you!"
By the end, Luke's voice was especially sincere and emotional, as if everything he did was for Cora's sake.
Cora looked at him deeply, but in the end, she still loved her son, so she took out her phone and put on her reading glasses to transfer money to Luke. "Don't do this kind of thing again, understand?"
Luke nodded vigorously. He needed three hundred thousand dollars to pay back the debt. The remaining two hundred thousand, he planned to keep for himself. He had no choice—Cora's health was poor now, who knows when she might faint again. He was doing this entirely for Cora's good. At least he'd have money on hand for emergencies, so I wouldn't control everything.
The man who had argued with Cora sat not far away, listening to everything. His contemptuous gaze swept over Luke as he curled his lips. He'd seen pathetic people before, but never anyone this pathetic and shameless.
After giving away such a large sum of money, Cora's anger had subsided quite a bit. She clutched her phone and called Tyler.
"What's wrong?" Tyler took a long time to answer, deliberately lowering his voice—clearly sneaking the call.
Irritation rose in Cora's heart, "Send me Sue's current home address!"
Tyler was taken aback, "What do you want her address for? If you want to know, why don't you just ask her directly?"
Cora said impatiently, "If she was willing to give it to me, would I be calling you?"
Tyler hesitated. "No, if she won't give it to you herself, then I can't give it to you either. Otherwise this becomes my problem."
The Miller family was in a precarious position now. Tyler didn't want to get himself in trouble.
Cora was so angry her chest heaved. She practically squeezed the words through her teeth, "Don't worry, I won't say you gave me the address. Besides, we've made up now, there won't be any trouble."
"Made up? You two?" Tyler clearly didn't believe it.
Cora snorted, "What else? I gave birth to her—she can't really disown me, can she? She wouldn't want people talking!"
Luke gently tugged at her sleeve, shaking his head to signal her to say less. Cora pressed her lips together and finally shut her mouth.
Tyler was silent on the phone for a long time, but finally agreed. Once she got what she wanted, Cora hung up directly.
Tyler sent over the address. Cora immediately had Luke call a car to go there right away.
I had no idea about this, and was happily admiring the sunroom. I turned to look at Jason, who was sitting nearby leisurely drinking tea, "Honey, I think I really do have talent in flower arranging, don't you think?"
Before Jason could respond, Lila hurried over quickly. "Mr. Cooper, Mrs. Cooper, the security guard contacted me, saying that..."
Lila first looked up at me. I nodded slightly and said, "Go ahead, I'm fine."
Only then did Lila continue, "He said Mrs. Cooper's mother insists on coming in, no matter how the guard tries to stop her."
As soon as she finished speaking, as if to prove Lila's words, someone began pounding forcefully on the villa's front door downstairs. From far away, I could hear Cora's voice, "Sue! Sue, come out here right now! I know you're home, don't think you can get away with staying silent!"
I'm in my own home—what am I getting away with? My brows furrowed.
"Get rid of them." Jason's voice carried a chill.
Only then did I come back to my senses and look up at him. "Honey..."
"It's okay, you don't have to see people you don't want to see. I'm here for everything." Jason stood up, walked over and gently embraced me.
His familiar scent instantly enveloped me, completely settling my heart. I smiled at him, "I'm fine, actually I'm not surprised at all that Cora came looking for me."
"And..." I paused, deliberately drawing out my words, "Rather than being annoyed, maybe this is actually a great opportunity?"
Jason met my gaze and immediately understood what I was thinking. He nodded slightly, "Alright, we'll do as you say."
Jason and I exchanged a smile, while only Lila still looked confused. "Mr. Cooper, Mrs. Cooper, what about the door..."
I nodded at her slightly, "Let them in."
The matter between Cora and me should have been settled long ago.
I had thought that when Cora saw me today, she would definitely give me a cold look the instant she saw me. Unexpectedly, after following Lila inside, Cora just looked at me expressionlessly and naturally sat down across from me.
Compared to how she used to want to thoroughly humiliate me whenever she saw me, her attitude had changed considerably. But what did that have to do with me? The harm she caused me was an established fact. I had no intention of understanding, much less forgiving.
Luke stood behind Cora. His gaze carefully swept over the interior decoration, his hands unconsciously rubbing together nervously in front of him.
After sitting down, Cora showed no intention of speaking first. I didn't plan to speak first either. After all, they were the ones asking something of me. If they weren't going to talk, why should I be anxious?
The living room fell into an awkward silence.
Lila brought coffee for the guests and carefully poured it, "Mrs. Cooper, please have some."
I reached out to take it and took a leisurely sip. Cora pursed her lips, her face full of disdain. "A country girl is now a lady—how impressive!"
Lila's expression changed slightly. Just as she was about to speak up for me, I raised my hand to stop her. I gently shook my head at her, then calmly replied, "Can't help it—Jason married me. Back then you and Tyler got together because you wanted to live the rich life, right? Too bad... Tyler didn't have the ability to handle the legitimate wife at home, so he could only let you go. Now with that jealous look on your face—are you jealous?"
Cora's expression darkened terribly. She clenched her back teeth, veins bulging on her arms, clearly furious at my words. "Sue!"
Cora warned me in a stern voice, "How can you talk to me like this? Don't forget I'm your mother!"
"Cora." Jason spoke up at the right moment, his voice lazy and noble, carrying invisible authority, "I hope when you speak, you can watch your attitude and show my wife the respect she deserves."
Cora was about to say something when Luke quickly interrupted her, looking at Jason with a fawning smile, "Mr. Cooper, please don't be angry. My mom is just like this—quick-tempered, speaks without thinking, but she means no harm."
I almost laughed out loud. This was full of malice! How could Luke have the nerve to say there was no harm?
Cora wanted to speak, but was quickly interrupted by Luke again, "Sue, since we've brought Mom over, I'll be going now. Mom just got out of the hospital and isn't well, so please take good care of her."
