Chapter 207
I was a bit slow to react.
I stared at Jason blankly.
A gentle light flickered in Jason's eyes. He lowered his head and kissed my lips, then pinched my cheek before straightening up.
"Honey, I'm off to work."
It wasn't until his footsteps faded away that I finally realized what happened.
Jason had played me.
He never doubted me from the start.
He just wanted to mess with me.
A wave of frustration rose in my chest.
Just then, Elizabeth called.
"Sue, are you free today? Let's meet up."
"No way!"
I snapped.
I'd just been played, and I was still annoyed!
Elizabeth paused, then asked in surprise, "Are you on your period? Why are you so cranky?"
I frowned. "Elizabeth, are you annoying or what?"
"Sue, why are you being so mean? Can't you just talk nicely?"
I rolled my eyes and said flatly, "Just tell me what you want now."
"But I want to talk in person."
"We're not that close. Meeting up would be awkward. Just say it over the phone."
Elizabeth didn't push it. Instead, she asked worriedly, "I already did what you told me to do, but Brian still won't talk to me. What should I do now?"
I said helplessly, "How would I know?"
Brian wasn't my husband—how would I know?
But Elizabeth clearly didn't see it that way.
"Weren't you Brian's secretary before? You should know him really well!"
The corner of my mouth twitched.
"Sure, I know him pretty well. He's a player who falls for anyone he sees. He could walk past any pretty woman on the street and fall head over heels."
I thought saying this would make Elizabeth give up.
But Elizabeth said matter-of-factly, "But that was before. Brian isn't a player anymore. After we got engaged, there haven't been any other women around him. I believe he's changed his ways and settled down. I'm sure he'll be a good husband!"
I said, "You're going to marry him eventually anyway. Brian's destined to be your man, so why are you making such a fuss?"
Unexpectedly, Elizabeth got angry at that.
"Sue, I can't believe you'd say something like that! I trusted you so much, but you don't understand me at all!"
"I don't want a marriage without love. That would be too painful. I want Brian to love me."
I fell silent.
Actually, I hadn't expected that Elizabeth, who seemed so carefree and had such a fiery personality, was actually quite genuine.
This kind of personality was actually pretty rare.
It was something I'd never had.
Looking at it this way, I actually quite liked Elizabeth.
She bravely pursued what she wanted, never giving up, passionate like a little sun warming others.
I sighed silently and said softly, "Elizabeth, if Brian can't see your sincerity, that's his problem for being blind, not yours."
I said this to comfort her.
But Elizabeth said, "I wonder when Brian will accept my heart and give me his in return."
Since we'd gotten to this point, I said, "Well, all I can say is that persistence will eventually pay off."
That evening after Jason got off work, the two of us took Jessica out to eat at a restaurant.
We didn't expect to run into Brian and Elizabeth.
Brian spotted us first and stopped in his tracks.
Elizabeth was holding his arm, still confused, "Brian, what's wrong? The food at this restaurant is really good, you have to try it!"
She followed Brian's gaze and saw us.
Jessica was very polite and greeted Brian cheerfully. "Hello, Mr. Ethan."
She didn't know Elizabeth or what to call her, so she didn't say anything.
Brian walked over with long strides and ruffled Jessica's hair.
"Long time no see. Jessica's grown a lot taller."
Jessica blinked her bright eyes. "You've gotten a lot more handsome too."
The corner of Brian's mouth curved up as he teased, "You're talking so swetly. Have you been eating a lot of candy?"
Jessica huffed and turned her head away proudly.
Brian's gaze swept past Jason and landed on me, "Sue, long time no see."
I held Jason's arm and smiled warmly, "It has been a while. Are you guys here to eat too?"
"Yeah."
Brian had just responded when Elizabeth quickly walked over, clinging intimately to Brian's side, looking at me with eyes full of possessiveness.
She asked, "Sue, is your family of three here to eat together too?"
She deliberately emphasized "family of three."
I could see right through her possessive little scheme regarding Brian.
But I didn't mind. I just smiled.
"Yeah, what a coincidence running into you. Want to eat together?"
"No way!"
"Absolutely not!"
Jason and Elizabeth refused at the same time.
I smiled slightly.
These two were really something. When it came to being possessive, neither was better than the other.
I shook my head helplessly and said with a half-smile, "Fine, fine. Don't get so worked up. I feel like my ears are going numb."
Brian looked at me with a half-smile.
He asked lazily, "I heard you gave some idiot advice to find a guy to make me jealous?"
I looked at Elizabeth pointedly.
Elizabeth guiltily lowered her head and picked at her fingers, not daring to meet my eyes.
I was instantly both angry and amused.
Great, she insisted on dragging me into giving her advice, and then she sold me out!
Elizabeth!
Really impressive!
Jason snorted coldly, wrapping his arm around my waist, "Honey, didn't I tell you before not to be soft-hearted and meddle in other people's business? Now look what happened. They're all lovey-dovey, and you're the bad guy."
I nodded in complete agreement, glancing pointedly at Elizabeth.
"You're right, honey. From now on, I absolutely won't meddle in other people's business. I'm going to stay away from troublemakers!"
With that, I stopped paying attention to Elizabeth and leaned into Jason's embrace.
"Honey, let's go eat. We're wasting time here, and I'm starving."
"Okay, honey."
Jessica ran to catch up with us.
What I didn't see was this:
After we left, Brian took the initiative to hold Elizabeth's hand, "Let's go eat too."
Elizabeth's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Brian, you..."
She stared intently at Brian holding her hand.
Brian raised an eyebrow, "Don't want me to hold it?"
"It's not that I don't want you to, but Brian, don't you like Sue? Why are you holding my hand?"
Brian was calm.
"Are we going to get married?"
Elizabeth nodded without hesitation, "Of course! We're already engaged!"
"Then what's wrong with me holding my wife's hand?"
Elizabeth's face slowly turned red.
She stared at Brian, unable to speak for a long time.
Brian glanced at her and continued, "From now on, we won't just be husband and wife. We won't just hold hands—we'll also kiss, and we'll have children."
Elizabeth's mouth slowly fell open, her pupils trembling.
Brian found it amusing.
"Haven't you thought about it?"
Elizabeth's face instantly turned completely red.
Of course she'd thought about it—she'd dreamed about it!
It's just...
