Chapter 131
My colleagues' faces were full of gratitude.
"That's great! You usually do most of the work. Having all these tasks suddenly handed to us really caught us off guard."
I smiled and said, "Don't mention it."
Putting myself in their shoes, if I suddenly had to take over so much work, I'd be stressed too.
Carrying the cardboard box out of DT Corp, I received a text notification just as I stepped through the company doors.
I put the box in the trunk before opening the message.
I was thinking to myself that although DT Corp's termination was sudden, at least the compensation came quickly.
But the moment I saw the amount deposited, I froze in place.
"......Fifty million dollars?!"
Looking at that long string of zeros, I couldn't believe my eyes and counted several times.
After confirming it was really that much, my first thought was, 'Am I being scammed?'
The moment that thought popped into my head, a second transfer came through.
This time it was fifty thousand dollars, probably my salary for this month.
My salary wasn't this high before. Even after the last raise, it wasn't this much.
Could the company have given me another raise without me knowing?
I still couldn't believe I'd suddenly received fifty million dollars.
I opened my mobile banking app to check who sent the money.
It was indeed from DT Corp.
And from the same account that paid my salary every month.
Must be a mistake, right?
Did someone in finance accidentally add extra zeros?
This is fifty million dollars!
How long would I have to work like a dog to earn this much money?
Sitting in my car, after thinking for a moment, I decided to call Brian.
The call connected almost instantly.
Brian's voice came through the phone, slightly drunk.
"Sue, don't go. Come back and work for me. I'm hiring you."
I paused, then said softly, "No thanks, Mr. Ethan. After working for so many years, I finally have a chance to rest."
Before Brian could say anything else, I continued, "I just received the compensation from the company. Finance must have made a mistake - they gave me fifty million dollars. Could you tell them to transfer the money back?"
Brian didn't seem surprised. "No mistake. That money is for you. Keep it."
I was stunned for a moment and asked instinctively, "Mr. Ethan, has the company done something illegal recently? Are you trying to make me take the blame?"
Brian didn't respond, and my anxiety grew. I wanted to rush back right now and make finance take back that fifty million!
"Mr. Ethan? I've worked for you all this time. You can't set me up like this, can you?"
When Brian still didn't speak, I couldn't help complaining.
Brian answered, "No, I can promise you this money is really for you. But it's not compensation from the company. It's from my dad."
"Mr. Terry Ethan?"
Now I was even more confused.
Brian continued explaining, "Because of the stupid thing Mia did, Jason found out about her drugging me that day. If my dad didn't pay up, Jason wouldn't let the Ethan family off the hook."
I thought about it and couldn't help saying, "Mr. Ethan, when is Mia coming back? Want to have her frame me again?"
Brian's light laughter came through the phone.
"If something really happened, you wouldn't be saying that. Not to mention anything else, Jason would definitely kill me first, then my whole family. And you'd definitely regret it."
Hearing him say that, I thought he had a point.
If Mia had successfully drugged me and something happened between Brian and me...
Never mind, even imagining that scenario is terrifying. Better not think about it.
Since the issue was resolved, I said, "Well, if there's nothing else, I'll hang up now—"
"Wait," Brian suddenly stopped me.
"Mr. Ethan, is there something else?"
"Even though you've left, we're still friends, right?" Brian asked.
I was a bit puzzled but answered his question anyway. "Yeah."
Brian said, "I'm getting engaged next week. Come to my engagement party."
Hearing this, I frowned. "That's... not a good idea, is it?"
Thinking about how Elizabeth looked at me like an enemy every time we met, convinced there was something improper between Brian and me, I figured I'd have to be crazy to attend Brian's engagement party.
Brian's voice carried a hint of disappointment.
He asked, "We're friends. You still won't come?"
I patiently explained, "Miss Perez has always misunderstood our relationship. Even though we're innocent, she doesn't think so. Now that you've decided to get engaged to Miss Perez, she's your fiancée. You should respect and consider her feelings. She'd be unhappy if I came, so I can't attend this engagement party. Once again, congratulations on your engagement."
After saying that, without waiting for Brian's response, I hung up directly.
The car was quiet, but my heart was incredibly excited!
Fifty million dollars!
That's a full fifty million dollars!
I instantly became financially free. A rich woman!
I was so excited, I couldn't wait to share this with someone.
I opened my contacts and called Lily.
Lily declined the call and immediately sent a message: [I'm on set. I'll call you back when I'm free.]
Alright then, looks like I'll have to enjoy this happiness alone for now.
I opened my mobile banking app and counted the zeros in my account balance over and over again.
Only when my eyes started to blur did I feel satisfied.
So this is what it feels like to get rich overnight?
Amazing!
While I was celebrating, Samuel called.
"Ms. Wilson, when will you arrive home? The moving company and I will reach your rental place in five minutes."
I didn't expect Samuel to move so quickly. I quickly said, "I'll be right there. Please wait for me, about ten minutes."
"Alright, Ms. Wilson, no rush. Drive safely."
I was about to hang up when I heard Samuel add, "Mr. Cooper asked me to tell you he has a meeting today, so he can't help you move, but he'll try to come home as early as possible."
The corner of my mouth twitched.
Then again, I got this fifty million thanks to Jason.
So I didn't say anything more.
After thanking Samuel, I drove home.
By the time I reached my door, Samuel and the moving company people were already waiting for me.
Looking around, there were so many people.
I was silent for a moment, then said, "Actually, you didn't need to bring so many people to help me move. I don't have that much stuff at home."
