Chapter 14: 13, She's a dragon
Mikael missed Rayvin the moment she got in her car and drove off. With a heavy sigh, he turned around to head up to the pack house. He could as well get some work out of the way so he could spend time with Rayvin when she got back.
He thought about the knives she had on her and shook his head. He understood that as an agent of the Mistvalley pack; she was well trained. But silver knives. Those could cause a lot of damage even with a small knick. He knew he had to accept who she was, but his alpha protectiveness was acting up.
He sat down at his desk and started looking through reports of the chains of gyms he owned. It was just one of the business ventures that he had that helped the pack by creating job opportunities, giving them a stable income and a standing in the human world.
The gyms looked to be doing good. Werewolves were naturally prone to training and as they naturally had toned bodies and good physical appearance, humans prefer their instructors before human ones.
There was a knock on the door, Mikael scented the air, for a moment hoping Rayvin were back. He was doubly disappointed. Not only wasn’t it Rayvin, but it was Milly. He sighed.
“Enter,” he said.
Milly walked in and Mikael almost groaned loudly. She was wearing something he would classify as a combination of a necklace and a handkerchief. Apparently, it was a dress. It barely covered her ass, it showed the sides of her breasts and all of her back. It was bubblegum pink with gold chains instead of straps.
Mikael shook his head. It did nothing for him, if you didn’t count irritating him. He was just happy that Ben wasn’t here to see her.
“Yes, Milly?” he said.
“Can I talk to you alpha Mike?” she asked and tried to look shy.
“Sure, take a seat,” he said, showing one of the visitor’s chairs on the other side of his desk.
“Thank you, alpha,” she smiled and batted her eyelashes. Could she be more cliche? Mikael thought.
As he was occupied by his own thoughts, he didn’t notice when she walked past the visitor’s chairs and rounded the desk. She hopped up on the desk, inches from him. Making her tight, short dress hike up even further.
Mikael shot up from his chair.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“You asked me to sit,” she pouted.
“On the visitor’s chair, Milly. Why would you think it’s okay to sit on my desk?” he reprimanded her.
That was his workspace, not a chair. No one should sit on his desk, he thought. Well, he would let Rayvin sit on it. The image in his mind quickly went from Rayvin sitting on his desk to him doing interesting things with her on his desk. He smirked. Yes, Rayvin would definitely be allowed to sit on his desk.
“Alpha?” Milly asked when she realised she didn’t have his attention.
“Off the desk, Milly. Now!” he told her.
“Yes, alpha,” she said and walked over to the chair he had intended her to sit in. When she had sat down, Mikael sat in his chair.
“What do you want, Milly?” Mikael asked. He tried to hold back the feeling of hopelessness from his voice.
“I wanted to talk to you,” Millie said.
“Yes, so you said. About what?”
“I wasn’t at the meeting last night. Ben said it would be okay,” she said, looking down at her hands.
Michael frowned. He hadn’t noticed her missing. On the other hand, he had been focused on Rayvin and making sure things went well. It had been a good call of Ben to have her not be there. He nodded.
“I’m guessing he told you what was said?” Mikael asked.
“Yes,” she said.
“Is that what you wanted to talk about?”
“Partly. The pack is scared. They were scared before, and now that they know what she is. It has only made it worse,” Milly told him in a thin voice.
Mikael felt like laughing.
“Milly, I didn’t believe you back then. Why on earth would I believe you now when she is my mate?” he said.
“B-but it’s the truth,” she stuttered.
“No, it isn’t, and we both know it. Milly, you need to understand some things,” he told her in a stern voice that made her look at him.
“I’m nothing like my father,” he continued.
“I know that alpha,” Milly nodded.
“Apparently you don’t. I’m not afraid of my pack, I don’t live separately from them. If they have an issue, they will come to me. I’m not afraid of your rumours,” he explained.
“But they don’t want to upset you, alpha. She is your mate. But she’s a dragon,” Milly almost whispered.
“She is half dragon, half wolf. If you are telling me the truth, you will give me names of those who are afraid of her. I will sit down with them and we will talk about it and find a solution,” he said.
“I-I can’t do that. That would break their confidence,” she told him.
“Last time, my father felt it necessary to use his alpha command on Ray. Should I use mine to get you to tell me who has said this to you?” he asked.
“No, please don’t,” she whined.
“Why not?”
“B-because there are no such pack members,” she mumbled.
“Milly,” Mikael sighed.
“Let’s get this straight. I will never give up Ray again. Never. If she chooses to not accept me or this pack, that will be it for me. I will spend my life alone. There is no possible outcome in which you and I end up together,” he told her.
“If it weren’t for your brother, I would have sent you away from the pack a long time ago. I have lost count of how many times you have disobeyed my direct orders. If you do anything, anything at all, to make Ray feel uncomfortable. You are no longer a member of this pack,” he continued.
“You will make me a rogue?” she asked with big eyes.
“No, it looks like the times for rogues are over. But I can ask one of the other packs to take you in. I have some favours to call in. Maybe you could even find your true mate,” he said.
“I don’t want him, I want you,” she pouted.
“That isn’t going to happen. Either you accept that, and treat Ray with the respect she deserves as your luna. Or you leave for another pack. I may even be kind enough to let you pick which pack,” he huffed.
“I have a right to challenge her for the position of luna,” Milly said.
Mikael looked at the she-wolf in front of him with her bleach blond hair, full make-up, skimpy dress and fake nails. Then he laughed.
“You do that Milly. I will even tell Ray she can’t use her silver knives. Milly, she’s an agent from the Mistvalley pack. She would eat you as a light snack and then go on to have an eight-course meal,” he chuckled.
“Was there anything else?” he asked.
“No alpha”
“Good, then leave. And think about what I have told you,” he said and waved his hand dismissively.
‘Ben, Diana, could you come to my office?’ he mind linked his friends.
‘On our way,” they both said. They knocked on the door two minutes later.
“What did she do?” Ben sighed heavily and Diana took her mate’s hand.
Mikael presumed Ben had felt his sister’s scent in the room.
“Sit down and we’ll talk about it,” Mikael said. He wasn’t looking forward to the conversation, but it was needed.
After he explained everything that had happened, skipping the dress to spare his friend some pain, they sat in silence for a moment.
“I’m sorry, Mike. I’ll talk to her,” Ben said.
“No, that’s not why I wanted to talk to you. I know that you have done what you could. I just want to give you a head up so you can prepare,” Mikael told him.
“Prepare for what?” Diana asked. She was gently stroking her mate over his shoulders. The simple gesture made Mikael miss Rayvin.
“If she crosses any lines that cause Ray to feel uncomfortable or tries to incite the pack against her, I will have her removed from the pack. It will be fast and without mercy. I will reach out to a couple of alphas and ask if they would take her in if it’s needed,” he told them.
He should have done it a long time ago, then Rayvin wouldn’t have to put up with coming home to this drama. But he couldn’t change that. He could make sure he protected her.
“I understand. You have been more than patient with her,” Ben nodded. Mikael felt like shit when he saw his friend hurting.
Ben’s phone rang, and he looked at it.
“I need to take this,” he said with a little smile. “Hello, luna,” he answered.
Mikael was surprised. Why was Rayvin calling Ben? Was something wrong? But why had she called Ben and not him? He heard Ben ask that same question and both he and Diana, who obviously could hear both sides of the conversation, looked amused.
As Ben hung up, Mikael looked at him. When Ben said nothing, Mikael raised his eyebrow.
“She needs me to impersonate someone,” Ben smiled.
“And why couldn’t she call me?” Mikael asked. To his surprise, Ben actually blushed.
“Well, the luna didn’t feel comfortable… “Ben started to say but trailed off.
This was bad, Mikael thought. What was Rayvin not comfortable speaking to him about?
“The luna wasn’t comfortable calling you daddy,” Diana smiled and shook her head at her mate.
“Oh, right,” Mikael nodded. that was not what he had been expecting. He didn’t have a daddy kink, and he admitted to himself that hearing Rayvin call him that would have felt so much worse. They both had issues with their fathers, and he really didn’t need that to complicate things.
Ben’s phone rang again and this time he seemed to talk to someone else. He was trying to get Rayvin a key to a hotel room, Mikael realised. Mikael smiled and shook his head. He would enjoy asking Rayvin about it later.
“Did it work?” he asked Ben as he had hung up.
“It did,” Ben nodded.
“That was a well-needed distraction,” Diana smiled.
“Yes, and I’m sorry to drag us back to the original subject. But do you want me to talk to your parents?” Mikael asked Ben. Ben shook his head.
“No, it’s okay. I think even my father has been expecting this for some time. I will call them later so they know it might happen,” Ben said.
“Okay. Then I had nothing else. How’s the investigation going?” he asked.
“Slow, but I hope that the luna’s suggestions will give us something,” Diana answered.
“Speaking of the luna, did Ray sound like she would be home soon?” Mikael asked Ben. Ben chuckled at his friend.
“I do not know. I don’t know why she wanted to get into the hotel room of Mr Ridge, so I don’t have a clue how long she will be and if she has other things to do after that. Sorry man,” he told Mikael.
Mikael huffed and felt his mood take a turn for the worse. He let his friends get on with their day as he tried to get some work done. He found it was hard to focus as his mind kept drifting to Rayvin and his eyes glanced at the empty glass box on his desk. Mikael realised he liked it even more now that it was empty as it showed that the necklace was where it belonged.
His phone rang, and he hoped for a second that it would be Rayvin. But the number on the display was unknown to him.
“Mikael Bloodfur,” he answered.
“Good afternoon Mr Bloodfur, this is the sheriff’s department,” a voice said. Mikael felt his stomach turn cold. Had something happened to Rayvin?
“Good afternoon,” he said.
“Are you de owner of a black Ford F-150 with the licence plate…” the sheriff asked and as he read the registration number, Mikael entered it into their register of vehicles that the pack had.
“Yes, sir. It’s one of our company cars,” he told the sheriff. He swore to himself as he saw who was driving it.
“We got a report of it being abandoned in a woodland area and we are here and the truck is here. Do we have your permission to enter it?” the sheriff asked.
“Thank you for calling. That won’t be necessary. I’ll have one of my employees come and get it using the spare key,” Mikael told him.
“Do you know who last drove the car?” the sheriff asked.
“Yes,” Mikael said.
“And have you seen this individual lately?”
“I have, no more than an hour ago,” Mikael lied. “May I ask why you want to know?” he asked the sheriff.
“There is what looks like a blood smear on the back of it. There is a locked bed cover on it, so we can’t see if there is something on the bed of the truck,” the sheriff explained.
“Thomas looked fine when I saw him last. It may be from a minor injury or an animal. I know Thomas likes to hunt,” Mikael told him.
“Well then, I’ll stay and monitor it until your man picks it up,” the sheriff said.
“It will be a woman, Diane Quickpaw, that is coming,” Mikael said. “Thank you for waiting,” he added.
“Very well. I’ll see her when she comes,” the sheriff said.
As they hung up, Mikael called Diana and explained the situation. She would take one of their warriors and get the truck back to pack land. She would make sure not to open the bed cover. Mikael called Rayvin. He needed her safe with him. To his relief, she seemed to hear his need and promised to come straight home.
