Together as one - Halley's POV
The silence that follows is unlike anything I’ve ever known. It’s thick, alive, and humming with the echo of what we’ve just done. My skin still tingles with the remnants of light, the bond pulsing beneath it like a living current. Every breath I take draws his scent deeper into me, wrapping around my senses until there’s no beginning or end.
Sam lies beside me, his hand tangled with mine, and his thumb brushing slow circles against my palm. His eyes are open now, steady and bright, the gold of his wolf flickering faintly behind them. For the first time in weeks, he looks whole. The bruises, though still there, seem lighter under the glow of the fire.
“I can feel you,” he whispers. “Not just your emotions, but your thoughts, your heartbeat, and everything else.”
“You always could,” I murmur, turning toward him. “It’s just different now that we are bonded fully.”
He lets out a breath that’s half a laugh, half a sigh. “Maybe, but now there’s no running from it.”
The bond hums between us, deeper than before. It’s not a thread anymore, but a tether forged in fire and blood. It feels right, powerful, and dangerous even. My wolf stretches inside me, testing this new strength, and I realize I’ve never felt so in control, so unafraid.
Sam’s gaze traces my face. “You’ve changed,” he says softly. “Not in a bad way. You seem so much stronger and ready to face everything.”
“I had to,” I answer. “The world didn’t stop when you left. It got harder and colder, but I learned to lead, to fight, and to stand on my own, so that way when you finally could come home, you’d see what we have to gain.”
His expression softens with something like pride and sorrow tangled together. “You shouldn’t have had to. I’m the one who—”
“I did. And now you’re here, and we’re stronger for it,” I say, cutting him off.
He nods slowly, his eyes closing as his forehead presses against mine. The bond hums once, and a pulse of warmth rushes through me.
For the first time since the rebellion began, I believe we might actually stand a chance.
The silence stretches on, broken only by the low hiss of the fire and the rhythm of our breathing. The weight of what just happened settles between us. We are different now and every part of me knows it.
Sam shifts slightly, his hand finding its way to my cheek. “You feel it too,” he murmurs, more a statement than a question. “I think we were always meant to be the ones who broke the rule.”
I nod. “It’s… overwhelming. Like I can’t tell where I end and you begin. You’re right though. We are the ones who were meant to do this. I’m not sure anyone else could face the council and survive.”
He smiles faintly, his thumb tracing the edge of my jaw. “That’s how it’s supposed to be. Two halves of the same power.” His gaze flicks briefly toward the window, where faint light spills through the rain-streaked glass. “The others will soon know as well, too. They’ll see it. Do you think Cale will be angry since he wanted you?”
I laugh. “Cale can deal with it, because I have never wanted him or alluded to wanting him. As for the others, they will see us as a united front, which is what we need.”
My wolf preens inside me, proud and sure. She’s finally whole, her strength interwoven with his. For the first time in months, she doesn’t pace or snarl at the edges of my control—she rests, content.
Sam rolls onto his side, watching me with that quiet intensity that always manages to undo me.
“You really led them,” he says after a moment. “Cale always talked about this pack like they were his to command. I didn’t think he’d ever give them up.”
“He didn’t at first,” I reply quietly. “He thought I’d be his queen, then he realized after you left that I was not one to trifle with. I changed right after that and then, he… gave them to me. They didn’t want to follow him, especially when they realized I no longer obeyed male alphas.”
Sam’s brow furrows slightly, surprise mingling with pride. “So Cale gave you the Redfang. Is that like some kind of fan club of his?”
“He did,” I say. “But not out of generosity. He thought he was setting me up to fail. It’s all been a test, but no, they’re not his little fan club.” A humorless smile tugs at my lips. “We patrol, looking for other outcasts to make our forces something to be reckoned with.”
Sam looks toward the window, his expression distant. “Then they’ll feel what’s just happened. The bond’s completion will ripple through every wolf tied to our pack. They’ll know their Alpha has a mate.”
The word Alpha vibrates through me, the bond pulsing in agreement. “Our pack,” I correct softly. “They’re ours now. Not his, not anyone else’s. Ours.”
He nods, the corner of his mouth lifting. “Ours,” he echoes.
A distant howl pierces through the morning stillness. It’s low and uncertain, probably one of the Redfang sensing the power shift. Another follows, louder this time. The sound spreads through the valley, building in waves until it drowns out all other noise. My heart beats faster.
They know and they accept us.
Sam rises slowly, every movement deliberate, his body still healing but his presence unmistakable. I wrap the blanket around my shoulders and follow him to the window. Outside, mist curls through the trees, and shapes begin to emerge. Their eyes gleam gold, reflecting the power that hums between us.
“They’re waiting,” I murmur. “You will also be their alpha now.”
“For us,” Sam replies, his voice steady as he shakes his head. “They can feel the change.”
I glance at him, the mark on his neck faintly glowing beneath the collar of his shirt. “Then let’s show them who we’ve become.”
Together, we step toward the door.
