Chapter 74: Unexpected Outcomes
The car drove through the city in a thick silence. Clara was sitting next to Marco, her mind filled with chaotic thoughts about what had just happened at the bar. Alex Morán, her former love, the man who had betrayed her trust, was now appearing in her life again, promising answers, but at a price she wasn’t willing to pay. Marco’s presence gave her some comfort, but she still couldn’t shake the pressure in her chest.
“Are you okay?” Marco asked, breaking the silence. Clara looked at him, trying to force a smile, but she couldn’t.
“I don’t know,” she replied, her voice barely a whisper. “I don’t know if I’ll ever be okay after this.”
Marco looked at her, concerned, but didn’t say anything else. He knew there wasn’t much he could do right now—just stay by her side and let time help her process what she had been through.
When they arrived at Clara’s mansion, Marco stopped the car in front of the entrance. Clara hesitated for a moment before speaking.
“Thank you, Marco. Really... I don’t know what I would have done without you today.”
“You don’t need to thank me, Clara,” he replied with a warm smile. “I’m here for whatever you need.”
She nodded, wordlessly. The weight of the situation was still there, even as the sun sank behind the horizon. Finally, Clara stepped out of the car, casting one last glance at Marco before heading into her house.
Hours later, Marco arrived at Anthony’s mansion. The house was wrapped in a tense stillness, as it always was when Anthony was home. Marco felt uneasy about having to talk to him about what had happened, but he knew he couldn’t keep it from him. He had to be honest.
When he entered, Anthony was in his office, going over some papers. Marco walked up to him with firm steps, letting the tension dissipate in the air.
“Anthony,” Marco said, interrupting his boss’s concentration. Anthony looked up, surprised by the seriousness in Marco’s voice. He set the papers aside and crossed his arms, looking at his friend and assistant with an expression that indicated he knew what was coming wouldn’t be trivial.
“What’s going on?” Anthony asked, his tone authoritative and somewhat concerned.
Marco hesitated for a moment but then nodded, deciding to speak plainly.
“I saw Clara with Alex Morán today,” Marco said, staring directly at Anthony. The words fell into the air like a bomb, and Anthony immediately tensed. His face hardened, and his eyes flashed with a mix of concern and anger.
“Morán?” he said, almost in a whisper. “The son of Mateo Morán, the head of the most dangerous mafia in Mexico. What was he doing with her?”
Marco took a breath before responding, his gaze fixed on Anthony.
“They were sitting in a café. They seemed to be talking calmly, but then Morán got angry and grabbed Clara’s arm... I felt the need to intervene and took her to Vincent’s house.”
Anthony stood up from his seat, his face tense and his gaze fixed on Marco.
“What kind of relationship do they have?” he asked, his voice low but dangerous. Marco hesitated for a moment before responding honestly.
“Clara didn’t tell me anything clear, but it’s something related to her mother, and I saw her really affected. I don’t know if she trusts him or if he’s manipulating her somehow. All I know is she wasn’t as distant from him as she should be, considering he’s an enemy.”
Anthony walked toward the window of his office, his eyes focused on the horizon. His mind was working at full speed, trying to process everything Marco had told him. Alex Morán, a dangerous man known for his ties to organized crime, was not someone Clara should be associating with.
“This is a bigger problem than I thought,” Anthony said, turning toward Marco with a serious expression. “If Clara is involved with Morán in some way, she’s not only putting her life in danger, but also ours.”
Marco nodded, understanding the severity of the situation.
“What should we do?” Marco asked, concerned.
Anthony looked at Marco intensely, his face emotionless. Then, his eyes softened slightly, as if a sudden idea had crossed his mind.
“The first thing we need to do is talk to Clara. We need to know what this relationship is about. If she’s not being honest with us, then we’ll have to take measures to protect her. And if she doesn’t understand, we’ll protect her anyway.”
Marco watched Anthony, noticing the determination in his eyes. Anthony was not someone who left things to chance, and if Clara was involved with Alex Morán in any way, it would put everyone around her at risk.
“Understood,” Marco replied firmly. “I’ll talk to her.”
But at that moment, Anthony approached, as if a sudden thought had crossed his mind.
“Marco, if Clara knows something she hasn’t told us, if she’s been in contact with Morán without us knowing, then we have to make sure she isn’t hiding anything. I want you to get closer to her, find out everything you can, but without her realizing it. This is bigger than it seems.”
Marco nodded, recognizing the seriousness of the order.
“I’ll do it,” he replied, although something inside him told him things were going to get even more complicated.
Anthony walked back to his desk, sat down, and looked at Marco again, this time with an intense gaze.
“If she’s involved in this, we need to have total control of the situation. We can’t let the Moráns have the upper hand. Clara’s family is too close to ours for this to be just a small mistake.”
Marco, though concerned, understood what Anthony was implying. There was more at stake here than he had imagined, and Clara’s family, although seemingly calm, might be more involved in this conflict than anyone had thought.
“I’ll do it, Anthony. But what if Clara refuses to talk? What if she doesn’t want to be part of this?”
“Then we’ll make sure she understands,” Anthony said, with a coldness that made Marco shiver slightly. In that moment, Marco understood that there was no turning back.
