Chapter 15: Chapter 15 – POV Lilianna

The morning light filtered through the heavy curtains, washing the room in muted gold. The chaos of last night seemed distant, but the lingering adrenaline refused to let me rest. Callum slept peacefully in the guest room, soft, rhythmic breaths punctuating the silence, and for a moment, I envied him. He had no idea what had happened, no idea how close he’d been to danger.

I stayed in the kitchen, hands wrapped around a mug of lukewarm coffee, staring blankly at the steam curling into the air. Matteo was upstairs, speaking in low tones with one of his lieutenants. The quiet was deceptive; it always was. In this world, calm never lasted.

I replayed last night over and over, the chaos, the gunfire, Petrov’s final smirk as Matteo restrained him. Every detail sharpened in my mind—the sound of my own heartbeat, the thud of bodies hitting the floor, the flash of Matteo’s eyes when he moved to protect me and Callum.

The door opened silently, and Matteo stepped in. His dark hair was still sleek, combed back, but his suit had been replaced with a tactical shirt and black pants. His expression was calm, collected, but the tension beneath it was palpable.

“We need to talk,” he said, voice low, carrying an authority that demanded attention.

I set my mug down, leaning against the counter. “About Petrov?”

He nodded, moving closer, eyes scanning the room as if expecting an ambush. “Petrov’s still a threat. Contained, yes, but he has connections everywhere. He’ll try to get out, and if not, he’ll try to send someone after us. We need to anticipate every move.”

I swallowed, the weight of responsibility pressing down on me. “So, what’s the plan?”

Matteo’s gaze met mine, dark, unwavering. “We cut off his resources, dismantle his network, and make sure no one he can reach is left standing between us and safety. That means going after his men, his shipments, and his allies.”

I nodded slowly, processing. “And Callum?”

“He stays here,” Matteo said firmly. “Under no circumstances does he leave this house. Not now, not ever, until I say it’s safe.”

My chest tightened. I hated the thought of my son confined, even for his protection. But I understood. Matteo’s world didn’t leave room for mistakes—not for him, not for Callum, and certainly not for me.

Hours passed with meticulous planning. Matteo’s men brought in maps, intel reports, photographs, and dossiers of every known Russian operative in New York. We studied each detail, marking addresses, tracking movements, identifying vulnerabilities. Every room in the house became a war room, filled with the soft hum of computers, the shuffle of papers, and the quiet murmurs of strategy.

I watched Matteo move, commanding the room without raising his voice. He was a general, a strategist, and a protector all at once. And somewhere deep inside, I felt a pang of something I couldn’t name—fear, longing, hope—all tangled together.

“Lilianna,” Matteo said, snapping me from my thoughts. “I want you focused. No distractions.”

I met his eyes, green meeting dark, and nodded. “I’m ready.”

He slid a file across the table. “These are Petrov’s top lieutenants. We start with them. Interrogation, containment, whatever it takes. But be careful. They’re dangerous, clever, and they know we’re coming.”

I opened the file, scanning the names and faces. Each one was a cog in a deadly machine, loyal to a fault, ruthless, and unpredictable. My stomach tightened, but I squared my shoulders. “Then we take them down. Step by step.”

Matteo nodded, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Good. That’s why you’re here. Together, we’re stronger. Alone… not so much.”

The first target was a warehouse on the East River, used as a storage site for illegal arms and drugs. Matteo had already scouted it, marking entry points, guard rotations, and escape routes. I followed him closely, every sense alert, every muscle coiled.

Callum stayed behind, safe under the watch of Matteo’s most trusted men. I kissed his forehead before leaving, promising him I’d return. The thought of him fueled every step I took.

The city was quiet as we approached the warehouse. Night cloaked the streets, shadows stretching long and dark. Matteo signaled for us to halt, crouching behind a stack of crates. “There,” he whispered, pointing. Guards patrolled methodically, unaware of the storm about to descend.

I checked my weapon, heart hammering. The adrenaline coursing through me was both terrifying and exhilarating. This was our world now—violence, strategy, survival. And I would not fail.

Matteo counted down silently with his fingers. Then we moved, a shadow among shadows, striking fast and silent.

The first guard never knew what hit him. A swift chokehold, a precise strike, and he was down, unconscious. The next two went the same way, until we reached the entrance. Matteo opened the door, and we slipped inside.

The warehouse smelled of oil, metal, and danger. Crates lined the walls, stacked high, hiding movements and secrets. And then the firefight began.

The men inside were prepared, but not for us. Matteo moved like a shadow, precise, lethal. I followed his lead, disarming, disabling, and when necessary, firing. My training, my instinct, every lesson I’d learned from the past three years surged forward.

Time blurred. Shots rang out, shouts echoed, bodies fell. My hands ached, my arms burned, my lungs screamed for air. But I pushed forward, each step a promise to Callum, a promise that I would protect him, no matter the cost.

We reached the central crate stack, where the main lieutenant was coordinating shipments. He turned, surprise flickering in his eyes, before drawing a weapon. Matteo moved faster, disarming him, pinning him to the wall with a brutal efficiency that made my heart race.

“Talk,” Matteo growled, voice low and dangerous.

The man sneered, defiance in his eyes. “You think you’ve won? Petrov… he’ll—”

I raised my weapon, cutting him off. “He won’t get the chance,” I said, voice sharp. “Not here, not tonight.”

Matteo tightened his grip. “We finish this clean. No mistakes. No mercy.”

The man faltered, realizing the truth in our eyes. His loyalty, his bravado, crumbled under the weight of our presence. Matteo released him, securing him for transport. “One down,” he muttered, voice a mixture of satisfaction and caution.

I exhaled, trying to calm the storm inside me. But there was no time. There never was. The remaining guards were closing in, reinforcements already moving. Matteo glanced at me, eyes sharp. “We move. Now.”

The escape was a blur of motion. Bullets zipped past, crates toppled, and shadows collided. Every step, every shot, every decision carried the weight of survival. I felt Matteo’s hand brush against mine as we moved together, silent acknowledgment, a shared understanding that we were stronger as one.

We reached the extraction point, where a van waited, engine humming softly. We piled in, hearts pounding, breathing ragged. Matteo took the wheel, eyes scanning the streets, plotting our escape.

I slumped against the seat, exhaustion hitting me like a freight train. “Is it over?” I whispered.

Matteo shook his head, jaw tight. “No. It never is. But we’ve won a small victory. One step closer to ending Petrov’s network. One step closer to keeping Callum safe.”

I closed my eyes, letting the tension seep from my body. “One step closer,” I repeated softly, a fragile hope taking root.

Back at the brownstone, Callum ran into my arms the moment I opened the door. “Momma!” he cried, curls bouncing, eyes shining with joy and relief.

I held him tight, feeling every ounce of fear and love collide. “I’m here, baby. It’s over for now.”

Matteo entered behind me, watching silently, his presence both protective and comforting. He knelt beside us, resting a hand on my shoulder. “We’re not done,” he reminded me gently. “But tonight, we rest. Tomorrow, we fight again.”

I nodded, letting myself lean on him, just for a moment. The fight was far from over, Petrov’s reach still lingering like a shadow over our lives. But for now, we had each other, and that was enough to face whatever came next.

Callum yawned, his small body curling against mine. “I love you, Momma,” he murmured, sleep tugging at his voice.

I kissed his forehead, tears threatening but held at bay. “I love you too, baby. Always.”

Matteo’s dark eyes met mine, and in that glance, I saw the unspoken promise: we would fight, we would survive, and we would protect our family. No matter the cost.

And as I tucked Callum into bed, I finally allowed myself a breath. The storm wasn’t over. It never would be. But together… together, we might just endure it.
