Chapter 13: Chapter 13 – POV Lilianna

The warehouse lay in ruins behind us. Smoke and debris twisted through the air, the smell of gunpowder and blood thick and acrid, clinging to our clothes, our skin, our lungs. Petrov had been forced to retreat, his men scattered, and I could feel the ache of exhaustion clawing up my spine. But victory felt hollow. This wasn’t over. Not even close.

I had seen the look in Petrov’s eyes as he fell back—a mix of fury and fear, the kind that promised he would be back, and worse this time. My body ached, bruised and raw, my hands still trembling from the adrenaline. Matteo’s presence beside me was grounding, steady, his own exhaustion evident in the way his shoulders slumped but didn’t collapse. His dark eyes scanned the area, always vigilant, never relaxing, never letting his guard down—not for a second.

I hated that part of him, even as I loved it. That razor-sharp focus, the deadly precision he carried in his every move—it had saved our lives countless times. And yet, it reminded me of everything we’d lost, of the blood Petrov had spilled, of my family… of Callum.

“Are you okay?” Matteo’s voice was low, a soft question amidst the chaos.

I forced myself to breathe, steady my racing heart. “I’m fine,” I lied, brushing soot from my hair. “Just… tired.”

He didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push. Instead, he clasped a hand on my shoulder, the pressure firm, grounding. “We need to move,” he said. “Petrov will regroup. He’ll strike again, faster this time. We can’t wait for him to plan the next attack.”

I nodded, the words like iron in my chest. Exhaustion was a luxury we couldn’t afford. Callum’s safety depended on us acting before Petrov could think to come after him.

The ride back to Matteo’s brownstone was tense, silent. Every shadow along the road seemed to hold a threat, every distant car a potential danger. Matteo drove with precision, eyes sweeping constantly, hand occasionally brushing mine in the passenger seat—a silent promise that he was there, always. I clenched my fingers around his, letting the contact remind me I wasn’t alone, that together, we could withstand anything.

Back at the house, the warmth of safety felt fragile. Callum was waiting in the living room, playing quietly with one of Matteo’s men, completely unaware of the horrors we had just faced. Seeing him safe brought a wave of relief, but it was quickly followed by guilt. He didn’t know, couldn’t know… and I wanted to keep it that way for as long as I could.

“Momma!” he called when he saw me, his small face lighting up with a smile.

I crouched down, scooping him into my arms. “Hey, baby,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “Did you have fun while I was gone?”

He giggled, his curls tickling my cheeks. “Yes! But I missed you.”

“I missed you too, my love,” I murmured, holding him tighter. My heart ached with the knowledge that no matter what we did, Petrov’s reach was long, and we couldn’t shield him forever.

Once Callum was tucked safely in bed, Matteo and I reconvened in his office. The dim light cast shadows across the walls, highlighting the maps, photographs, and files we had been studying earlier. The night outside was silent, too quiet, and it felt like the world was holding its breath.

“Petrov won’t wait long,” Matteo said, his eyes scanning a photo of the man himself. “He’ll come for us, for Callum, for you. He’ll try to manipulate, to intimidate. That’s his strength—he plays with fear like a game.”

I leaned against the desk, rubbing my temple. “Then we make sure he loses. We find him, and we take him down before he has a chance to strike again.”

Matteo’s jaw tightened. “It won’t be simple. He’s smart, calculating, and dangerous. He’ll have traps, reinforcements, maybe hostages. We need a plan—one that anticipates everything.”

I nodded, determination hardening inside me. “Then we plan. But I want in, Matteo. I want to be out there with you. I can’t just sit here while he comes for us.”

His eyes softened for the briefest moment before returning to steel. “You’re right. But we do this my way. Precision, coordination. Any mistake and Petrov will exploit it. There’s no room for… improvisation.”

“Agreed,” I said, voice steady despite the tension curling in my stomach.

We spent the next hours pouring over every piece of intel we could gather. Surveillance photos, financial records, communication intercepts—it all formed a web, and we were determined to find the weakest thread to pull. Petrov’s operation was sprawling, ruthless, and well-funded. But arrogance ran deep in him, and that arrogance would be his undoing.

By the early morning, we had a plan: a three-pronged strike targeting his supply routes, his lieutenants, and his headquarters simultaneously. Matteo and I would lead the charge on the central target—the warehouses he used as a staging ground. Others would cut off reinforcements, ensuring no one could intervene.

“Ready?” Matteo asked, looking at me. His eyes were dark, serious, and the weight of responsibility in them made my heart pound.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I said, gripping my weapon tighter.

The streets of New York were slick with rain as our team approached Petrov’s main warehouse, the tension thick enough to taste. Matteo’s strategy was meticulous, every step calculated to minimize exposure while maximizing impact. I followed closely, matching his pace, alert to every shadow, every movement.

“Stay close,” he whispered. “We hit the east side first. It’s less guarded.”

I nodded, heart hammering in my chest. Adrenaline and fear combined into a sharp, driving focus. Callum’s face flashed in my mind—his wide eyes, trusting, innocent. I would protect him. I would not fail him.

The warehouse loomed ahead, steel and shadows, ominous and threatening. We moved like phantoms through the darkness, silent and precise. Matteo’s hand brushed mine as we approached the door, a silent reminder that we were in this together.

Inside, chaos erupted immediately. Petrov’s men were prepared, but not for us. Gunfire cracked through the air, shouts echoed off steel walls, and the smell of smoke and sweat filled the space. Lilianna—me—moved with deadly precision, taking down guards silently when possible, but resorting to controlled aggression when needed. Matteo was lethal, calculated, his every move saving lives, including mine.

“Cover me!” I shouted as a man lunged at Matteo from behind a crate. With one precise shot, I incapacitated him, feeling the sting of adrenaline but refusing to let it cloud my focus.

We pressed forward, moving toward Petrov, who had taken position at the center of the warehouse. He was calm, unnervingly so, as if the chaos around him was a game.

“Costello,” he sneered, his eyes flicking to me. “I told you—I know what matters to you. I know who you care about. You can’t protect them forever.”

I felt fury ignite inside me. “Try me,” I spat. “We protect what’s ours. Always.”

Petrov’s smile was cold, amused. “Bold words for someone standing in my warehouse with guns pointed at everyone they love.”

The fight escalated. Matteo and I moved as one, anticipating each other’s moves, covering angles, taking down threats. Petrov’s men fell one by one, their confidence shattered by our coordinated precision. But Petrov was smart—he wasn’t going to go down easily.

He tried to flee, darting toward a hidden exit, but Matteo intercepted him, blocking his path. I aimed, heart racing, finger on the trigger. “It ends now, Petrov.”

He sneered, but there was fear in his eyes now, just a flicker. “You think this changes anything?”

“It changes everything,” I said. “For you, for me, for my son. This is where it ends.”

With a final coordinated push, we subdued Petrov, binding him for extraction. Matteo’s team secured the warehouse, ensuring no reinforcements could arrive. The fight was over, but the aftermath was heavy, the weight of what we had survived pressing down.

I sank into a chair, hands shaking, adrenaline finally ebbing, as Matteo placed a hand on my shoulder. “We did it,” he said quietly. “He’s contained. Callum is safe.”

I nodded, exhausted but resolute. “For now.”

Matteo’s gaze met mine, dark and unreadable. “We’ll finish this. No loose ends.”

I knew he was right. Petrov might be restrained tonight, but his empire, his influence, would not be destroyed overnight. And as long as he existed, we would always be one step away from danger.

But for the first time since the attacks began, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years—hope. Hope that together, Matteo and I, we could survive this. Protect what mattered. And maybe… just maybe… carve out a future for Callum that wasn’t defined by fear.
