Chapter 460

Chapter 460

Sienna spoke urgently, and the officers were already used to working with her. Without a word, they stepped back two paces, and one of them lifted his foot and kicked hard at the iron door.

The iron door was old and poorly maintained—it couldn't withstand the officer's powerful kick.

The door slammed against the wall, stirring up dust that made everyone cough repeatedly. The sounds that had been muffled behind the door suddenly became clear.

"Is this... a mummy coming back to life?" The officer's tone was stunned.

The room's furnishings were messy and old. Kimball, the murder and theft suspect they'd been investigating, now had a face flushed bright red, breathing heavily and rapidly.

And in front of him was the mummy stolen from the museum.

The mummy was now swaying unsteadily, hands wrapped around Kimball's neck, nearly strangling a full-grown man who wasn't exactly skinny right before their eyes.

While everyone else was still frozen in shock, Kelvin strode forward and kicked the extremely valuable mummy away without hesitation.

The mummy crashed into a pile of debris. The loud noise snapped the stunned group back to reality.

Sienna rushed forward and pressed her fingers against Kimball's neck.

The pulse beneath her fingers was weak, but blood was still struggling to flow.

"He can still be saved!" This was an important suspect. Sienna breathed a sigh of relief, feeling somewhat fortunate, "Get him to the hospital first, see what exactly is going on."

While the officers behind them took Kimball away, Kelvin had already turned his attention to the kicked-aside mummy.

When he kicked it, he seemed completely unconcerned about the mummy's value. As Sienna turned to look, she saw that the mummy's abdomen now had a very clear dent.

A dent?

Sienna frowned, her small face showing a cold and serious expression.

Kelvin had obviously noticed the same problem. He straightened up and let out a low, cold laugh.

Mummies were dried corpses. Even if damaged by external impact, the most likely result would be breaking apart in the middle.

Bones and dehydrated flesh had no shock-absorbing function—where would there be space for Kelvin's kick to create such a clear dent?

Kelvin took two steps forward and was about to reach out when Sienna called out sharply, "Wait!"

"What's wrong?" Kelvin looked back at her.

Sienna handed him a pair of gloves and carefully put on latex gloves herself.

"This counts as important evidence. Better not leave fingerprints."

After saying this, Sienna reached out directly and carefully unwrapped the mummy's bindings along the pattern of the bandages.

"Just as I thought."

Sienna let out a breath.

Beneath the aged, yellowed bandages, there were no bones or dried corpse at all—just a silicone model someone had made.

The model's abdomen still bore the deep impression from Kelvin's kick.

Sienna frowned and scanned the scene.

"Someone was trying to set up a murder scene?"

As the bandages were peeled away layer by layer from the mummy model, Sienna's frown deepened.

Because on the mummy's hands, inside the soft silicone model, someone had installed a mechanism made of steel.

Two semicircular iron pieces slowly tightened over time, and from the outside, it looked like the mummy was tightening its hands, gripping a person's throat.

"Pretty clever."

"Too bad it was used to kill someone."

Kelvin shook his head.

The two began examining the room.

The old room was clearly small, yet the two of them managed to stay at opposite ends of it as if there wasn't another person in the room.

During the scene investigation, the hospital called.

Travis answered and put it on speaker.

"Just so you know, part of the reason the patient is unconscious is due to oxygen deprivation, but before that, he appears to have inhaled air containing anesthetic components, which caused muscle relaxation and unconsciousness."

"Regarding the anesthetic components, we're analyzing the patient's blood samples, but we'll need a few more hours for specific results."

When the doctor finished speaking, Sienna couldn't help but frown.

Kimball had inhaled air containing anesthetic components before losing consciousness, which meant someone had been at the scene and used some method to administer drugs to Kimball.

But the problem now was...

Sienna looked around, her small face tensing slightly.

Kelvin had come up empty just like her.

The old room was less than fifty square meters. No matter how messy it was, you could see everything clearly at a glance.

But inside this room, Sienna hadn't found any proof or trace of a second person's presence.

Whether it was fingerprints or shoe prints from the samples, they all belonged to Kimball.

Sienna exhaled, her expression somewhat heavy.

"If there was no second person at the scene."

Sienna lowered her voice, then hesitated and changed to a more precise way of putting it, "No, wait. I should say, if there are no traces of a second person at the scene."

"Then this person has very strong concealment abilities, or there never was a second person. Everything was Kimball's own doing."

At this thought, Sienna cupped her chin and frowned, "Why would he plan something like this? To create a second person, or to fake his death to escape punishment?"

After she finished speaking, Sienna shook her head again.

While this theory was logically sound, when placed in the context of the actual scene, something felt off everywhere.

Based on what the police saw when they broke in, this wasn't faking death to escape punishment—he was genuinely about to die!

Sienna was completely puzzled when Kelvin's emotionless voice spoke up, "Instead of overthinking it here, why not just go ask Kimball directly?"

"When he wakes up, interrogate him."

If Kimball was trying to fake his death to escape punishment, there was no need to go to such extremes.

Just then, the hospital called again.

"The patient has regained consciousness. He's currently fine, and his mental state hasn't been affected."

The hospital provided very detailed information, "But there's one thing—the remaining drug content in the blood sample is too low. We couldn't determine the specific components of the drug."

For the group, the drug components weren't particularly important right now.

Hearing that Kimball had woken up, the group returned to the station.

The interrogation room's iron door opened. Sienna and Kelvin walked in one after the other. Though they were colleagues, when they sat down, they took seats at opposite ends of the table.

Kimball, sitting across from them, kept his head down. He didn't dare look at the officers who'd entered the interrogation room, and thus missed the undercurrent of tension between the two.

"Do you know why you're here?"

Kelvin's tone was cold.

Only one bare white bulb lit the interrogation room, its harsh light casting everyone's faces in a grayish-white pallor.

Kelvin's voice echoed in the empty room, making Kimball shudder.

"I don't know."

Kelvin let out a cold laugh. Sienna followed up, "You have a biological father named Marlon."
