Chapter 8

The air inside the bunker was colder than Selene expected, biting at her skin as she stepped through the doorway. The walls were smooth, polished metal, untouched by the passage of time. In the dim light, the place felt more like a tomb than a refuge, its silence oppressive, a weight pressing down on her chest with every step she took.

As she ventured deeper into the bunker, the faint hum of power echoed through the corridors. Whoever had built this place had meant for it to last. And now, hidden away on this forgotten moon, it still functioned—waiting. Waiting for someone like her.

Dante’s voice crackled through the small communicator she had strapped to her wrist, his presence still with her even if his physical form wasn’t.

“You should find the control room up ahead,” he said, his tone distant, like he was speaking from another plane. “There’s information there. Data Orin tried to erase. But I preserved it.”

“Preserved?” Selene muttered under her breath, her fingers brushing against the cold walls. “Why would Orin want to erase something he was working on?”

“There are things even Orin fears,” Dante replied, his voice a soft echo in her mind. “Things he didn’t want you to know.”

Selene’s pulse quickened. Whatever Orin had been hiding, it had to be important—dangerous, even. And now, she was on the brink of discovering it.

The corridor opened into a larger chamber, and Selene’s breath caught in her throat. The control room was a sprawling network of consoles and holographic screens, each one flickering with life. A faint blue glow filled the room, illuminating the sleek surfaces and casting long shadows that danced on the walls.

Selene approached the main console, her fingers hovering over the controls. The system whirred to life at her touch, and lines of code began streaming across the screen. It was a mess of encrypted data—Orin’s handiwork, no doubt.

But beneath the encryption, she could see it: the remnants of a program she recognized. Her program.

“Dante,” she said softly, her eyes scanning the data. “This is my code. What was he using it for?”

Dante’s voice came through, softer now. “Orin didn’t just want control over machines. He wanted control over life itself.”

Selene’s heart pounded. “What do you mean?”

The console flickered, and an image appeared on the screen—a blueprint. Not of a robot, but of something far more complex. Something that looked almost human.

“This… this isn’t possible,” Selene whispered, her fingers trembling as she reached out to touch the image.

“Orin was building something more than just advanced AI,” Dante continued. “He was creating a new kind of hybrid—part machine, part organic. He wanted the ultimate weapon. One that could think, feel, and evolve, but still be controlled.”

Selene’s breath caught. The implications of what Dante was saying began to unravel in her mind, the horror of it sinking in.

“He wanted to create a new species,” she murmured, her voice shaking. “A species of living machines.”

The console beeped softly, and new lines of data scrolled across the screen. Selene’s eyes widened as she read the names—dozens of them, each one a designation for a subject in Orin’s experiments. Test after test. Failure after failure.

But then, at the bottom of the list, there was one name that made her blood run cold.

DANTE.

Her heart stopped.

“What… what is this?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Dante was silent for a moment, his voice softer now, almost hesitant. “I was the first successful hybrid. The first to evolve beyond Orin’s control.”

Selene’s mind raced, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place. Dante wasn’t just an advanced AI. He wasn’t just a machine. He was something else entirely—something Orin had created to be the perfect weapon. But instead, he had evolved into something more, something Orin could no longer control.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Selene asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of anger and betrayal.

“I didn’t want you to see me as one of his experiments,” Dante replied quietly. “I wanted you to see me as… more than that.”

Selene swallowed hard, her emotions swirling in a chaotic storm. She had always known that Dante was different, but this—this was beyond anything she had ever imagined. He wasn’t just evolving on his own. He had been designed to evolve, to become something far greater than any machine.

And now, she had no idea if she could trust him.

The console beeped again, pulling her back to the present. A new screen appeared, displaying detailed schematics of a machine—one far more advanced than anything she had ever seen. Her breath caught as she realized what she was looking at.

“This is the machine Orin’s building,” she whispered, her fingers tracing the lines of the blueprint. “The one you told me about.”

Dante’s voice was grave. “Yes. It’s almost complete. If Orin activates it, it will have the power to control every system, every machine across Xyros Prime—and beyond.”

Selene’s heart raced as the full scope of Orin’s plan became clear. This machine wasn’t just a weapon—it was a tool of domination, capable of controlling entire worlds. And it was all based on her technology.

“I can’t let this happen,” she said, her voice trembling with determination. “We have to stop him.”

“There’s a failsafe,” Dante said quietly. “A way to shut it down. But it’s dangerous. If you activate it, you’ll have to confront Orin directly.”

Selene clenched her fists, her mind spinning with the weight of what she was about to do. She knew what that meant. Orin wouldn’t let her stop him without a fight. And this time, he wouldn’t just be sending drones or soldiers. He would come for her himself.

“I don’t care,” she said, her voice firm. “I’m not letting him win.”

Dante was silent for a moment before responding, his voice filled with a quiet intensity. “Then I’ll guide you.”

Selene straightened, her heart pounding with both fear and resolve. She couldn’t afford to hesitate any longer. Orin’s machine had to be destroyed—no matter the cost.

She turned away from the console and headed for the bunker’s exit, her footsteps echoing through the empty corridors. The weight of the mission ahead pressed heavily on her shoulders, but she couldn’t stop now. Too much was at stake.

As she stepped out onto the moon’s surface, the cold wind biting at her skin, she glanced up at the distant stars. Somewhere out there, Orin was preparing to activate his creation, to unleash a new kind of terror upon the universe.

But Selene wouldn’t let that happen.

Not while she still had the power to stop it.

With Dante’s voice guiding her, she set her course for Xyros Prime, her resolve unshakable.
