Chapter 6: The First Merge
The forest was still. Too still. Lucas’s shadows coiled tightly around him, sensing danger before he could see it. Elijah stood a few feet away, his flames flickering uneasily. The air between them was charged, like the moment before a lightning strike. Neither spoke, but the tension was thick enough to choke on.
Then, without warning, the creature lunged from the shadows.
It was faster than before, its twisted form a blur of claws and teeth. Lucas barely had time to react, his shadows surging forward to block the attack. Elijah’s flames erupted, lighting up the forest as he launched a counterattack. But the creature was relentless, dodging their strikes with terrifying speed.
“We can’t keep this up!” Elijah shouted, his voice strained. “We need to hit it harder!”
Lucas gritted his teeth. He knew Elijah was right, but the thought of combining their powers made his stomach churn. Shadows and fire didn’t mix. They were opposites, enemies. And yet…
The creature lunged again, its claws slashing through the air. Lucas felt a sharp pain in his side as it grazed him. He stumbled, but Elijah was there, his flames creating a barrier between them and the creature.
“Now or never, Blackwood!” Elijah growled, his amber eyes blazing.
Lucas hesitated for only a second before nodding. “Do it.”
Elijah’s flames surged forward, meeting Lucas’s shadows in a burst of light and darkness. The air around them crackled with energy, and for a moment, everything seemed to stop.
Then it happened.
Their powers merged, creating a swirling vortex of shadow and flame. The creature howled, caught in the maelstrom. Lucas felt a surge of power unlike anything he’d ever experienced, a raw, primal force that made his wolf howl in triumph.
But it was too much.
The energy exploded, throwing them all to the ground. The creature screeched, its form dissolving into smoke and ash. When the dust settled, the forest was silent.
Lucas groaned, pushing himself up. His body ached, and his head was spinning. He looked over at Elijah, who was lying a few feet away, his flames flickering weakly.
“What the hell was that?” Elijah muttered, his voice shaky.
Lucas didn’t answer. He didn’t know. All he knew was that their powers had merged, and it had felt… right. Like they were meant to be together.
But he couldn’t say that. Not to Elijah. Not to anyone.
They returned to the campsite in silence, the weight of what had just happened hanging heavy in the air. Nova and Kael were waiting for them, their faces pale with worry.
“What happened?” Nova asked, her black eyes scanning Lucas for injuries.
“We fought the creature,” Lucas said shortly, not meeting her gaze. “It’s gone.”
Kael raised an eyebrow. “And you two? You look like you’ve been through a war.”
Elijah shot him a glare. “We’re fine. Just… tired.”
Nova frowned, her sharp eyes narrowing. “There’s something you’re not telling us.”
Lucas sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Our powers… merged. It was the only way to stop the creature.”
Nova’s eyes widened. “Merged? But that’s—”
“Impossible,” Kael finished, his voice tinged with awe. “Shadow and fire don’t mix. They’re opposites.”
“Tell that to the creature,” Elijah muttered, his flames flickering uneasily.
Nova stepped closer to Lucas, her voice low. “Are you okay? I mean… how did it feel?”
Lucas hesitated. How could he explain something he didn’t even understand? It had felt… right. Like a missing piece of himself had finally clicked into place. But admitting that out loud? It was too much.
“It was necessary,” he said finally, his voice tight. “That’s all.”
Elijah snorted, his amber eyes flashing. “Necessary? Is that what you’re calling it?”
Lucas turned to face him, his shadows rising. “What do you want me to say, Elijah? That it felt good? That I enjoyed it?”
Elijah’s flames flared, his jaw tightening. “I don’t know, Blackwood. Maybe the truth for once?”
The tension between them was palpable, a storm waiting to break. Nova and Kael exchanged a look, but neither intervened.
“The truth?” Lucas growled, stepping closer to Elijah. “The truth is that I don’t trust you. I don’t trust your fire, your pack, or your motives. But right now, we don’t have a choice. The creature’s out there, and it’s not going to stop just because we can’t stand each other.”
Elijah’s eyes narrowed, but he didn’t back down. “You think I trust you? You and your shadows? You’re just as dangerous as that creature.”
Lucas’s shadows surged forward, but Elijah’s flames met them halfway. The air between them crackled with energy, the same strange twilight forming where their powers touched.
Nova stepped between them, her voice sharp. “Enough! Both of you need to cool off before you burn this whole forest down.”
Kael nodded, his gray eyes serious. “She’s right. We’re supposed to be working together, remember?”
Lucas and Elijah glared at each other, but neither backed down. Finally, Elijah turned away, his flames dimming. “This is a waste of time. I’m done.”
He stormed off into the forest, leaving the others in stunned silence. Nova sighed, running a hand through her white hair. “Well, that went well.”
Kael chuckled, but there was no humor in it. “They’re like two pups fighting over a bone. How are we supposed to stop the creature if they can’t even stand each other?”
Lucas didn’t answer. He couldn’t. His mind was racing, his wolf restless. The merge had shaken him more than he cared to admit. It had felt… right. And that scared him more than anything.
