Chapter 30: When Light Breaks

The purifying light from Lucas and Elijah's crystal spread through the room like a wave, touching each corrupted creature in its path. Thomas's howls of pain turned to gasps of relief as the darkness began to leave his body.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

"If I can't have your power," he snarled, "no one will!" His magic lashed out, wrapping around Thomas's halfcleansed form.

"No!" Lucas reached for his old friend, but it was too late.

Marcus's corruption rushed back into Thomas, stronger than before. But this time, instead of twisting him, it began to tear him apart.

"What are you doing?" Elijah commanded, horror flowing through their bond.

Marcus's laugh bounced off the stone walls. "Showing you the true cost of defiance!"

The corruption spread from Thomas to the other creatures, breaking them down, pulling their soul into Marcus's body. With each soul he took, his power grew darker, more terrible.

"We have to stop him!" Nova's ice magic flew at Marcus, but he batted it away like smoke.

Through their bond, Lucas felt Elijah's desperate plan form. "The crystal," Elijah said. "If we can amplify its power—"

"It'll kill you both!" Kael protested, understanding their purpose.

"Better us than everyone," Lucas answered, squeezing Elijah's hand.

Their shadowfire surged, feeding into the crystal's pure light. The cleaning wave grew stronger, pushing back against Marcus's darkness.

But Marcus had one final move.

As the light reached him, he grabbed Thomas's squirming form. Dark magic poured from his hands, not just ruining now but transforming. Thomas screamed as his body twisted, grew, changed into something that shouldn't exist.

"Let's see how you handle fighting your friend while trying to save everyone else!" Marcus released the monster Thomas had become, bigger and more terrible than ever before.

The creature that had once been Thomas charged, its massive form filling the room. Red eyes blazed with mindless fury as corruption dripped from its fangs.

Lucas and Elijah moved as one, their combined magic forming a shield around their warriors. The crystal's light continued to spread, but slower now as they split their power.

"We can't fight both!" Nova shouted as she jumped away from Thomas's claws.

"Then we split up," Elijah said, his mind touching Lucas's through their tie. "You keep directing the crystal's power. I'll handle Thomas."

"No," Lucas pulled him close. "We do this together. Remember?"

Their eyes met, and in that moment, they understood. The prophecy wasn't just about their power combining – it was about deciding to stay united, no matter the cost.

As one, they turned to face the thing. Their shadowfire wrapped around the crystal's light, forming something new – a power that could both fight and heal.

The monster that was Thomas lunged again, but this time they were ready. Their power caught him midleap, holding him suspended as pure light began to seep into his corrupted form.

"Fight it, Thomas!" Lucas called to his old friend. "We're here to bring you home!"

The creature thrashed in their grip, but something in those red eyes flickered. Recognition. Memory. Hope.

Marcus screamed in rage as he felt his control slipping. "You can't save him! You can't save any of them!"

But he was wrong.

Through their bond, Lucas and Elijah poured everything they had into the crystal – their power, their love, their shared soul reaching for closure. The light exploded outward, filling every part of the chamber.

Where it touched corrupted things, darkness burned away. Where it reached Marcus's stolen power, it began to unravel his work.

Thomas's massive body shuddered as the light engulfed him. For a moment, he fought against it. Then, with a howl that shook the mountain, he submitted to the cleansing fire.

The corruption cracked like a shell, showing the wolf beneath – battered, weakened, but alive. Thomas fell to the floor, himself again for the first time in fifty years.

"Impossible!" Marcus stumbled back as his power over the other creatures began to break.

Nova and Kael rushed to help the freed wolves while Lucas and Elijah advanced on Marcus, the crystal's light getting brighter with each step.

But Marcus had one last trick. As the light reached for him, he smiled – a terrible, knowing smile that chilled their blood.

"You think you've won?" Dark power swirled around him like a cloak. "This was just the beginning. The prophecy has more lines than you know, and the next one..." He laughed as his form began to fade. "The next one will break your precious love apart."

"Stop him!" Nova shouted, but it was too late.

Marcus disappeared in a swirl of shadow, taking the last traces of his corruption with him. The blood moon's light faded, returning to its natural silver glow.

In the sudden quiet, Lucas and Elijah ran to where Thomas lay. Their old friend opened his eyes – normal brown eyes, free of corruption's red taint.

"Lucas?" Thomas's voice was rough from years of silence. "Is it really..."

"It's me," Lucas knelt beside him, tears falling easily. "You're safe now. You're home."

Elijah squeezed Lucas's shoulder, sharing his joy through their tie. But underneath flowed worry about Marcus's final words.

Around them, freed wolves were reuniting with pack members who had looked for them for years. Nova organized healing circles while Kael examined the chamber for hints to Marcus's escape.

"What did he mean?" Elijah asked quietly. "About the next verse?"

Lucas stood, pulling his mate close. "Whatever comes next, we face it together."

But as they helped their people leave the fortress, both felt the weight of Marcus's warning. The crystal's light had dimmed, but not gone out – as if it knew its job wasn't finished.

The blood moon had passed, but dawn seemed darker than it should be. Something was coming. Something that would test not just their power, but the very bond between their shared soul.

Marcus was out there, planning his payback. And next time, he wouldn't just try to take their power.

He would try to tear apart the love that made that power possible.

But he didn't understand one thing – a soul that chose to be together was stronger than any force that tried to break it apart.

Whatever the next verse of the prophecy held, they would face it as they had faced everything else.

Together.

Always together.
