A Pack's Pain

Dawn hadn't yet broken when Nova burst into Lucas's tent, her face pale in the lamplight. Kael followed close behind, holding an ancient book with trembling hands.

"Lucas, wake up," Nova's voice shook. "We found something."

Lucas sat up quickly, careful not to disturb Elijah who slept beside him, exhausted from their fight with the creature. "What is it?"

"The creature," Kael opened the book, its pages yellow with age. "We know what it is. Who it is."

Lucas felt his heart skip. Something in their faces made his blood run cold. "Tell me."

Nova took a deep breath. "Remember Thomas? Your beta from fifty years ago?"

The name hit Lucas like a physical blow. Thomas had been more than his beta – he'd been his friend, his brother in all but blood. Until the day he disappeared while guarding their borders.

"What about him?" Lucas demanded, though part of him already knew the answer.

Kael put the book on the small table, pointing to a page filled with familiar handwriting. "These are Marcus's study notes. We found them hidden in the papers Elijah stole." He swallowed hard. "They detail his first experiments with combining shadow and fire magic."

"No," Lucas whispered, but he couldn't stop reading.

Subject shows promise. The shadow wolf's loyalty to his Alpha makes him immune to corruption, but pain has its own power. More power needed.

"He took Thomas," Nova's voice broke. "Used him as a test subject. Tried to force dark and fire magic into him until..."

Until he became that thing. That twisted, corrupted thing they'd been fighting. Lucas felt sick.

Behind him, Elijah stirred. "Lucas? What's wrong?"

The lamp flames flickered wildly, responding to Elijah's feelings as he sensed Lucas's distress through their bond. Lucas couldn't speak, couldn't move.

Kael explained quietly while Nova held Lucas's hand. With each word, Lucas felt his world breaking apart.

"The transformations were excruciating," Kael read from the notes. "Subject retains strong connection to former Alpha. Possible power for future use."

"I should have known," Lucas finally spoke, his voice raw. "When he disappeared... I should have searched harder."

"You did search," Nova told him gently. "For months. We all did."

"Not hard enough!" Lucas stood suddenly, his magic darkening the tent. "He was suffering, being abused, turned into that... that thing. And I gave up."

Elijah wrapped his arms around Lucas from behind, his warmth pushing against the cold spreading through Lucas's chest. "You couldn't have known."

"I was his Alpha," Lucas's voice broke. "I was supposed to protect him."

Through their bond, Elijah sent waves of love and relief, trying to ease Lucas's pain. But the guilt felt like it was eating him alive.

"There's more," Kael said grudgingly. "Marcus's notes... they say the process is permanent. The corruption can't be undone."

Lucas closed his eyes, remembering the creature's bright red eyes, its twisted form. Somewhere inside that monster was Thomas – loyal, brave Thomas who had stood by him through countless fights.

"We have to end his suffering," Nova said softly. "When we face Marcus tomorrow night..."

"I'll do it," Lucas cut her off. "It has to be me."

Elijah's arms tightened around him. "Not alone. Never alone."

Outside, the camp was waking up. Lucas could hear wolves preparing for the coming fight, training with their newly combined powers. None of them knew that the thing they feared was once one of their own.

"Should we tell the others?" Kael asked.

Lucas shook his head. "They need to focus on tomorrow night. This..." he touched the book with shaking fingers, "this stays between us."

Nova and Kael nodded, understanding. They left softly, taking the book but leaving its terrible truth behind.

When they were alone, Lucas finally let his tears fall. Elijah held him, their magic swirling together in shared sadness.

"I failed him," Lucas whispered. "I failed my pack."

"No," Elijah turned him around, cleaning away his tears. "Marcus failed him. Marcus betrayed him. And tomorrow night, we make him pay."

Lucas looked into those golden eyes he'd grown to love so much. "How can you be so sure? About any of this?"

"Because I know you," Elijah touched his cheek. "Your heart, your strength, your love for your pack. Thomas knew it too – that's why he fought Marcus for so long."

Their magic pulsed between them, shadow and fire dancing together. Through their bond, Lucas felt Elijah's total faith in him, in them.

"The creature," Lucas remembered, "it warned us about the omen. About a price that had to be paid."

"Whatever the price," Elijah said furiously, "we pay it together. Your pack is my pack now. Your pain is my pain."

Lucas pressed his forehead against Elijah's, breathing in his smell of smoke and sunrise. "I'm afraid," he admitted. "Not of Marcus, not of death. I'm afraid of falling again. Of losing someone else I love."

Elijah's flames wrapped around them both, warm and protective. "Then we don't fail. We respect Thomas by stopping Marcus, by saving others from his cruelty."

Outside, the sun finally broke through the trees. The blood moon was coming tonight, bringing with it their final fight. But now they had one more reason to fight, one more wrong to right.

"Together?" Elijah asked, offering his hand.

Lucas took it, feeling their power surge. "Together."

They stepped out of the tent into the morning light. Around them, their combined packs trained and prepped, shadow and fire working in harmony. Tonight, they would face Marcus and the creature he'd made from Lucas's friend.

But first, Lucas had a duty to perform. He gathered their closest friends – Nova, Kael, and a few trusted others. Together, they would plan not just for success, but for mercy. Thomas deserved that much.

As they walked to the command tent, Elijah never let go of his hand. Through their bond flowed power, love, and a promise: No one else would suffer as Thomas had. No one else would fall to Marcus's evil.

The blood moon was rising, and with it, the time for justice.

They would save the world, free Thomas from his torment, and make Marcus pay for every moment of pain he'd caused.

Or they would die trying.

Together.
