Chapter 46 Moonveil Institute

Chapter 46 Moonveil Institute
Elara's POV

Sebastian sat in his usual high-backed chair while Damian, Nolan, James, and Aurora gathered around the coffee table, waiting for the SAT scores to be released. I sat quietly by the window, half-listening to their conversation.

"I'm telling you, I'm going to get at least 1550," Nolan said confidently. "Nightshade and Lycanthrope Alliance should both accept me with that score."

Aurora spoke softly from the loveseat, her voice carrying that delicate quality she'd perfected. "I'm worried about my score. Being injured during the test really affected my concentration."

At exactly ten o'clock, Nolan's phone chimed and he grabbed it immediately. His face lit up as he read the screen. "1560! I told you!"

Sebastian nodded with approval. "Well done, Nolan. That's an excellent score."

Damian clapped Nolan on the shoulder while Aurora checked her own phone, her expression falling slightly. "1480. Not as good as I'd hoped, but considering my injury..."

"That's still great," Nolan said quickly, satisfaction clear in his eyes.

Sebastian looked at me. "Elara, you should check yours as well."

I picked up my phone, scanned the email, and set it back down. "1590."

"Did you just say 1590?" Damian asked slowly, pushing off from the mantle to take a step closer.

"Yes," I confirmed. "Is that unusual?"

"Unusual?" James squeaked, bouncing to his feet with such energy he nearly knocked over a side table. "Elara, that's almost perfect! That's the highest score you can get!"

Nolan's face had gone pale, then red, then pale again, cycling through emotions so fast I couldn't track them all. His jaw worked like he wanted to say something but couldn't quite form the words, and his hands clenched into fists at his sides so tight his knuckles turned white.

Before anyone could say anything else, our butler appeared in the doorway looking slightly flustered, his usual composure cracked by whatever had brought him here. "Excuse me, Alpha, but there's a Dr. Ashford here from Nightshade University."

Nolan's entire demeanor changed in an instant, his back straightening and his face lighting up as he smoothed down his shirt and ran a hand through his hair. "That must be for me," he said confidently, moving toward the center of the room with the self-assured stride of someone expecting good news. "My score must have caught their attention. They probably want to discuss scholarship opportunities."

The butler showed in a distinguished-looking man in an impeccable suit, carrying a leather portfolio that spoke of prestige and importance. Dr. Ashford's gaze swept the room with professional assessment before settling on Sebastian with the courtesy due to an Alpha.

"Alpha Sterling, thank you for seeing me on such short notice," he said, shaking Sebastian's hand with a firm grip before turning to survey the rest of us with evaluating eyes. "I'm looking for Miss Elara Blackwood. Is she available?"

The air seemed to solidify around us, everyone freezing in place as the words registered. Nolan's confident smile cracked at the edges, his eyes widening in disbelief and something darker. Aurora's face went absolutely white, her fingers digging into the loveseat cushions hard enough that I could see her knuckles turning pale.

"Elara is right here, she's Elara Sterling now," Damian said smoothly, gesturing toward me.

Dr. Ashford walked over to my window seat, his expression warming as he approached with the practiced friendliness of someone used to recruiting top students. "Miss Sterling, it's an honor to meet you. I'm here on behalf of Nightshade University to personally congratulate you on achieving the highest SAT score in this year's applicant pool. Your 1590 is truly exceptional and places you among the elite students we've seen in decades."

He pulled out a cream-colored envelope with gold embossing from his portfolio, holding it out to me with both hands in a gesture that conveyed the significance of the offer. "Nightshade University would be honored to offer you a full scholarship, including room and board, and a guaranteed position on the Council upon graduation. We believe you have the potential to become one of the most influential members of our community."

I took the envelope, running my fingers over the raised seal while everyone in the room stared at us with varying expressions of shock, envy, and disbelief.

"I just knew you'd do amazing!" James shouted, launching himself at me for a hug.

The butler appeared in the doorway again, looking genuinely panicked this time, his professional composure completely shattered. "Sir, there's another university representative here. From Lycanthrope Alliance University. They're also asking for Miss Elara Sterling."

The sitting room descended into controlled chaos as more admissions officers began arriving, each one more prestigious than the last, their presence filling the space with competing offers and escalating promises.

Within twenty minutes, the room was packed with representatives from universities I'd only heard about in passing, all of them clutching folders and talking over each other about research funding and special programs and career opportunities that seemed almost too good to be true.

"We can offer twenty thousand dollars per year in research grants," the Lycanthrope Alliance director was saying, a sharp-faced woman with calculating eyes. "Access to our advanced laboratories with equipment found nowhere else, and werewolf genetics, and guaranteed placement in our graduate program with full funding."

Aurora wasn't even trying to hide her feelings anymore. She sat rigid on the loveseat with her hands clenched in her lap, her eyes fixed on me with such intense jealousy that it made my skin prickle with awareness. Her carefully maintained facade of sweet fragility had cracked completely, revealing the raw envy beneath.

The butler appeared yet again, but this time his expression had shifted from panicked to completely bewildered. "There's one more visitor, sir. A woman claiming to represent something called Moonveil Institute."

Nolan let out a harsh laugh that had no humor in it whatsoever. "Moonveil Institute? I've never even heard of that. What is it, some kind of diploma mill trying to cash in on Elara's score?"

The woman who entered the sitting room made everyone else fall silent. She was tall and ethereal, with silver hair that fell past her waist in a cascade that seemed to catch light that wasn't there, and deep purple robes that shimmered with their own inner light.

Dr. Ashford frowned, his professional courtesy slipping into confusion. "I'm sorry, but I've never heard of Moonveil Institute. Are you listed in the official university registry?"

The woman smiled, and it was like watching moonlight ripple across still water. "My name is Seraphina Moonwhisper, and no, you won't find Moonveil Institute in any registry you have access to. We operate outside the standard werewolf education system, under the direct authority of the Council."

Every other admissions officer in the room went still, their expressions shifting from confusion to wariness.

Seraphina's gaze swept the room before landing on me. "Moonveil Institute exists to train those with rare gifts, individuals who carry bloodlines that predate modern pack structures. We only accept students who possess both werewolf and magical abilities, particularly those descended from the Guardian lines."

She walked directly to me, ignoring everyone else in the room as if they didn't exist. "Elara Sterling, Guardian magic runs in your blood. I can sense it, the old power that your mother passed down to you. Moonveil Institute can teach you to control it, to understand it, to use it without being consumed by it."

"This is ridiculous," Nolan said, his voice sharp with frustration and something that sounded almost like desperation. "Elara, you can't seriously be considering this. These other universities are legitimate, with real credentials and proven track records."

Aurora spoke up from the loveseat, her voice weak but laced with poison. "Elara has always been so special, so different from the rest of us. I'm sure she'll make whatever choice makes her feel most unique, regardless of what's actually best for her future."

I felt Damian tense beside me, his protective instincts flaring, but Sebastian raised his hand before he could say anything. The Alpha's presence filled the room, his power making everyone take an involuntary step back.

"Enough," Sebastian said quietly, but the command in his voice was absolute. "All of you have made your offers, and we appreciate your interest in Elara. However, the decision is hers alone to make."

He looked at me directly, and I saw something in his eyes I'd never expected to see there. Trust and respect and genuine care. "Choose what feels right to you, Elara. Don't let anyone else's expectations or opinions influence your decision. This is your life, your future, and you're the only one who gets to decide what path you take."

I looked at Seraphina. "Where exactly is Moonveil Institute located?"

She smiled. "Right here in Silverstone Pack territory, in the eastern forest. Most people dismiss it as ordinary training grounds. We prefer to remain hidden in plain sight."

Nolan's jaw dropped. "What? I've lived here my entire life and I've never heard of any institute in our territory!"

"Moonveil maintains specific wards," Seraphina explained calmly. "Only those with magical sensitivity can perceive our true nature."

I stood up, the grimoire clutched in my hands. "I choose Moonveil Institute."

The explosion of voices was immediate. Dr. Ashford looked genuinely shocked. "Miss Sterling, you're turning down a full scholarship to Nightshade University? Do you understand what you're giving up?"

"She's throwing away her entire future," the Lycanthrope Alliance director said sharply.

Nolan stepped forward, face flushed with anger. "Elara, this is insane. You're making a huge mistake."

I met his eyes steadily. "I know exactly what I'm doing."

"Do you?" Aurora's voice was soft but venomous.

"That's enough," Damian said sharply.

Sebastian stood. "My daughter has spoken. I trust her judgment completely."

Seraphina inclined her head. "Classes begin on the next full moon."

She left as quietly as she'd arrived, and gradually the other admissions officers filed out as well, some looking disappointed, others outright angry.
