Chapter 85 Chapter 85
Violet
Hearing Alpha Alaric's question, Nicole let out a hearty laugh.
She was obviously enjoying this too much.
I kept my mouth shut only for my parents' sake but that was not the case with Cassie who finally open her mouth.
“Imagine being so lonely that you have to point a gun at others using dear daddy’s name to be there at your wedding.”
Cassie said what I wished but didn’t for the fear of letting my pack or my parents take the brunt of his ire because I trampled upon the wishes of his daughter.
Cassie was glaring at Nicole who frowned again.
“Oh come on, learn to laugh a little!” She tried to downplay the act but Cassie took a step forward as if she was a bull with horns that she wanted to ram into Nicole’s abdomen.
“No, you learn to step back a little. Ever since you showed up, you have turned this dinner into your personal scoial media campaign. Not once did you ask how Lady Aurelia was or the father you recently acquired through no credibility of your own. You showed up here, and just turned it all about yourself, your stupid proposal and an even stupider marriage. But you know what, not everybody is going to bend backwards for the pretty bitch who is ugly as fuck on the inside.”
The silence that followed after Cassie’s spontaneous outburst was rather deep. Cassie was panting like a mad bull, glaring daggers at Nicole who did what she did best when confronted.
Her eyes grew moist and she tried to take a step back, looking at the others for support.
Nate cleared his throat delicately. “Look Cassie, that is not what she wants or I want either. We just wanted to make the moment special and memorable with our loved ones.”
Cassie directed her murderous glare to him.
“Yeah I know very well how you treat your loved ones so dont try your sleazy act with me. Its not going to work.”
Nate stared back at her for a second, hoping that she would say its all a joke but when she didn’t, he laughed.
“You are such a badass, Cassie. And funny!”
His laughter died too when nobody else joined him but after a few more minutes of awkward silence, Alpha Alaric tried to diffuse the tension.
“Oh my sweet daughter thinks I ignored you for Nicole. Come here.”
He pulled her into a hug and ruffled her hair, dismissing her words as tantrum. Seeing that, Nicole and Nate sighed in relief.
“So now, that is settled, right? We will have a weeding soon and will have to call all our distant relatives and other dignitaries soon.”
He then looked at Lady Aurelia. “I believe this will keep you occupied for days to come. But I am sure you can manage everything withing a short span of time.”
She looked a bit surprised and pleased to finally have her partner’s attention, even if it was for the sake of assigning work and nodded.
“Of course, alpha Alaric. We will turn this event into a celebration no werewolf has ever seen before.”
Nicole clapped again, forgetting all of Cassie’s words and began fussing about designer clothes, makeup and brands that she wanted.
Meanwhile, Cassie came back towards me. “Thanks” I muttered and she frowned.
“Thats the least I could do after realizing how I contributed to your sorrow. But like always, nobody took me seriously for being the youngest. They never do!”
I pulled her close and hugged her.
“Its okay. I take you seriously and so does your brother.”
I said and my eyes wandered through the hall that was exploding in gossip and chats. Elijah had walked away from the hall and I saw the faint outline of a black shirt disappearing down the hallway so I let them all revel in celebration and dashed after him.
Elijah was walking stiffly, a scowl etched on his face.
“Hey, where are you going?”
He sounded irritated.
“To my pack and work I guess.”
“What?” I shouted. “And leave me here?”
Elijah looked at me with an expression that was closer to hurt.
“You are wanted here. I am not.”
He began walking down the hallway and that is when I suddenly realized that all of them were fixated on one-upping each other.
Nobody had really had a conversation with him. In fact, Alpha Alaric had not even exchanged a word with him as far as I could remember correctly.
“Hey!”
I ran towards him, seeing that look of defeat in his eyes. He had met his family after ages and neither of his parents, biological or not, had bothered to talk to him.
“I tried my best but I can’t make the world defy alpha Alaric’s orders. So I am sorry you are stuck here for more than a month when I promised to take you home this morning.”
He hung his head and I hated how deflated he looked.
“Hey, look at me!” I snapped my fingers and then cupped his face with both my hands.
“You said you were not leaving me yesterday right? I wanted to go but you didn’t let me. So now, I am asking you to stay with me until this mess is sorted out. Stay with me, stand by my side as my pillar of support.”
He leveled his gaze at me and asked. “So are you really going to be a maid of honor in your ex’s wedding?”
I exhaled a long breath and replied. “If you promise to stay with me till the end. After all, you are going to drop me home, remember?”
And just like that, the dimple showed up again.
A month ago, I would not even have imagined being a bridesmaid in Nate’s wedding instead of the bride. Or to start looking forward to seeing a cute dimple on the face of a man I had not known until that day back at Salt and Smoke.
Fate was weird that way.
But I felt glad to have Elijah by my side. I was still not sure what name to give our relationship but he was a far better person to me than Nate ever was.
Elijah stuck his hands in his pockets and shrugged.
“Then who is going to run my pack if I stay here for a whole month?”
I bit my lip at that. I hadn’t thought that far ahead.
“Well, I saw your pack when I visited it during Cassie’s treatment and I know that you dont have a traditional pack. There were no high borders, no guards running around with high tech security gear. Everybody looked happy and was doing their own thing. That tells me, it would function well without its alpha well enough.”
Elijah bowed his head.
“I will take that compliment. But the truth is, I dont do it all. I have a lot of help. Gavin and Tyler are not just my warriors but my pillars of support.”
Hearing their name made the smile falter on my face. Elijah noticed that and inched closer to me.
