Chapter 17: The Child Looks Like Him
Just like that, Samuel saw Mia's face and the resemblance to himself.
"Based on the timeline, Nora was pregnant with Mia before she broke up with you, so... I suspect Mia is your daughter!"
In a daze, Kevin's previous words appeared in Samuel's mind again.
His head buzzed. After a long while, he lifted his head and looked at Nora.
"Nora, is there something you want to tell me?"
"No!"
Nora's face paled. She grabbed him from the chair and used all her strength to forcibly push him out of her home.
"Mr. Green, you ruined my and David's reputation before. I'm very angry. I don't want to have dinner with you anymore. Please leave now and don't come to my house again."
After saying this, before Samuel could speak again, she slammed the door shut with a bang.
"Mommy, what's wrong? What did Mr. Green do wrong? Why are you mad at him?"
Mia was frightened by Nora. She stared at her with wide, timid eyes.
"It's nothing. Mr. Green... ahem, is Mommy's boss. He's very busy with work and can't stay at our house for too long, so Mommy was rushing him to leave."
Nora rubbed her temples, forced herself to calm down, and gave Mia a gentle smile.
"I see."
Mia nodded in confusion. After a moment, she muttered softly.
"Mommy, will he come to our house to play with Mia again?"
"I don't know why, but even though I've only met Mr. Green once, I feel he's so warm. I like him."
She... likes Samuel?
Is this the bond between biological father and daughter?
Nora's pupils shrank, and her eyes turned red uncontrollably.
"Mia, Mr. Green is a big boss, and he's about to get married. After marriage, he'll have his own children."
"Anyway... anyway, he's very busy every day and probably won't come to our house again! If Mia wants a playmate, after dinner, Mommy will play with building blocks with you, okay?"
"Okay."
Mia was an easily satisfied child. After Nora comforted her with a few words, she immediately forgot about Samuel and went to eat happily.
Looking at Mia's bright smile, a shadow fell over Nora's heart.
Samuel saw Mia's face and seemed to suspect something. Would he investigate her background?
If he learned the truth, would he see Mia as a stain on his life and try to get rid of them both?
Nora's mind was in chaos. She didn't sleep all night and went to the company the next day with dark circles under her eyes.
And her work wasn't going smoothly either.
"Nora, are you deliberately causing trouble?"
Shortly after Nora arrived at the company, Director Lee from the publicity department angrily burst into her office door and threw a file on her desk.
"The reimbursement receipts don't comply? The suppliers chosen when purchasing promotional materials don't comply? You're really good at throwing dirt on our publicity department. Believe it or not, I'll go to Mr. Green right now and have him fire you?"
"Director Lee, I'm currently conducting an internal audit of the company. The reimbursement receipts submitted by the publicity department are suspected of being fake. I have the right to ask you to provide more convincing receipts."
Nora glanced at the things thrown at her, her expression very calm.
"If you think what I'm doing is unreasonable, you can go to Mr. Green and have him handle it for you! But I need to remind you that as long as I'm in this position, my audit standards won't change."
"Fine, you just wait!"
Director Lee pointed at her nose and left cursing.
"You're in trouble."
Kevin's workstation was right next door. After witnessing everything, he sighed and pressed his temples.
"Nora, that Director Lee is not only a senior in the company but also a trusted aide of Mr. Green's father. In previous internal audits, the people leading the audits didn't dare to seriously check the publicity department's accounts."
"And you're going after them right out of the gate.""Just wait. She'll definitely go to Chairman Green."
So Director Lee had such strong backing. No wonder she showed almost no respect when mentioning Samuel.
Nora's eyes flickered, but her attitude remained neither humble nor arrogant.
"I'm just doing what I should do. If Chairman Green wants to blame me, I can't help it!"
"Why are you so stubborn?"
Kevin had no way to deal with her. He could only secretly tell Samuel about their conflict during lunch.
"That's good."
Hearing that Nora had offended Director Lee, Samuel was stunned for a moment, then showed a pleased smile.
"I put her in charge of the audit work to have her help me clean up the company's trash."
"But..."
Kevin looked worried and wanted to say more, but before he could finish, Samuel's phone rang.
The caller was his father, Sebastian Green.
"Assistant Nelson, you really guessed right. Director Lee did go to my father."
Samuel glanced at his phone screen, deliberately allowing the phone to ring for a little longer, then picked up the phone and pressed the answer button.
"Samuel, I heard you recently hired a personal secretary and put that secretary in charge of this year's company audit?"
As soon as the call connected, Sebastian's angry voice came through the phone.
"For you to value her so much, that personal secretary must have some real skills."
"But she's too reckless. She offended someone she shouldn't have. I suggest you give her a vacation and let her go home and rest for a few days."
