Chapter 30: Rejected by the Beta, Claimed by the Alpha
It's well past nightfall, nearly 2:00 in the morning and I still can't sleep.
Lilac.
I still don't know where she is, but as long as she's not here, at least she's safe.
Many of the beast’s friends haven't slept in days. I can't tell why though. They just don't ever
seem to be tired. My eyes drift to the beast's tent and I imagine myself driving my claws through
his neck while he sleeps. If only.
We move at dawn, which is only a few hours away. Then it's another two or three-hour trek
before we get to Lethal pack and have a 'surprise attack.' I really dug myself a grave here. Letting
the enemy know when we're coming and then fighting on the opposing side. Great job alpha.
It's a miracle the beast didn't already kill me. Our last stop last night made him furious. He woke
up to find the majority of the allies I brought gone. My punishment now is to be on the front
lines, but I was going to do that anyways. Even if I can just explain to Alpha Lethal why I'm
doing this, perhaps he'll let us win? No. Perhaps he'll have mercy. At the very least, he could
help me see my mate again.
"Rouge on the North border!"
My ears prick up in alert at the shout and I rise from the wet log I was sitting on.
America is the last place I thought I'd find a rouge. Vicious pack does a good job weeding and
threading them out.
"Maybe it's on it's way to Revenge pack?" A wolf suggests, receiving a smack on the back of his
head by another.
"Don't call it that! If he hears you he'll throw a fit. Just capture it. It could be a Spy."
I along with about a dozen others inch my way to the tree line where obvious rustling is headed
in our direction. There's no scent other than that of obvious sweat and exertion. Strange.
"Should we kill it?" Someone whispers.
"No," I growl quickly.
This is a war and any Ally is a welcome Ally.
Even in the dark and with a small amount of light granted by our bonfire, I can see a small figure
coming at suck a quick speed that it's hard to make anything out.
One thing is unmistakable as the figure pounces through the line and latches onto me. It's that
hair. The wild knotted blonde locks that haven't been washed, probably since she was taken from
me.
"Lilac?!" I growl in equal parts thrill and worry. "What are you doing here? Who brought you?!"
I scan the woods for an escort or anyone really, but it's just my mate squeezing the life out of
me.
"I- I got out," she half pants and half sobs. "I went home, but you weren't there, so I followed
Mason and my dad said you were staying behind to battle the American packs, but then I heard
you couldn't leave cause you had a blood oath and I needed to see you!" She rushes out.
I shake my head and squint my eyes closed in frustration. Mason. How hard is it to keep a
teenage girl from running away?! Countries away! I'm beyond thrilled to see her as she can tell
by how tightly I hug her back and my refusal to let go, but now any hope I had for the Monster
dying due to his failed blood oath is over. Now I have to fight. Now I have to explain this all to
her.
"Lilac..."
I sigh and shake my head. How can I tell her that coming here was a mistake? How could I tell
my mate that she shouldn't have come to be with me?
"I love you," I finish weakly. I can't explain anything right now. She'll just have to learn as we
go.
"I love you too," she cries into my shoulder.
It's a moment of complete peace and absolute serenity. No one around us matters and none of
them question the circumstance, probably having realized what's going on themselves.
"Would you look at that?" The monster rumbles from behind us. "I'll call off the search party."
I turn around to face, not even bothering to let Lilac ho or set her on the ground. The monsters
voice alone makes her shiver in my grip.
"And now that my end of the blood oath has been fulfilled, we won't bother to wait until dawn.
We move now."
The monster's yellow eyes focus on my mate, a flesh crawling smile pulling at his face.
"Good to have you back little one. Another warrior is always welcome."
Like hell. Even as the monster turns, I know I'll have to find some way to get Lilac out of this. I
can't let her fight too...but maybe she could tell Alpha Lethal what's going on.
All I have to do is explain everything and if we move out now, I should have plenty of time to
catch her up.
This might turn out better than I thought, but either way, it looks like I'm still going to have to
fight. Possibly to the death.
