Chapter 61 THE MOON NEVER MESSES UP
Edeline
“So, like, why would she even say she’s going to mate with Percival? She isn’t. Everything is just temporary. He turned her down. So, why wouldn’t a female wolf want to know who her mate is? All we think about after a shift is that!” I asked, my voice rising in disbelief.
Nixx nodded quietly. “So, I asked her what would happen if things were different, you know? And she just shrugged it off, saying it didn’t matter. She already had her path set and apologized for it. I brought up the fact that she might end up losing the pup, and that seemed to worry her a bit. I was curious—why would I want a wolf like that? But I couldn’t help but wonder, if she miscarried, would she think of me? Well, she shut that down real quick, Edeline. She said no, she would already be mated to Percival by then. And if not him, then some other alpha, because apparently I’m not the one for her. Her dad’s counting on her to bring an alpha to the table and secure the pack’s future. It’s her responsibility, but I just don’t understand it, Edeline…”
My mind was racing. Tatiana seemed desperate to secure Percival as her mate before she potentially experienced a miscarriage. She hadn’t even considered Nixx because he wasn’t an alpha and she needed one for her pack. It was frustrating and puzzling.
The moon never messes up.
I felt a surge of determination to uncover the truth. I was planning to let Percival know and figure out why he had lied to me. It hurt deeply that he’d said he hadn’t checked on her when he had. Why lie about something like that? I wasn’t even checking on her—just the pup. It was a bit frustrating, but I could see where he was coming from.
“I’m really sorry, Nixx. It sounds like she’s gotten even worse now…” I said, feeling a pang of sympathy for him.
He looked at me with urgency in his eyes. “I mean, it’s crazy, but I can’t stop thinking about her, you know? It’s like I’m losing it! She’s carrying another guy’s pup, for crying out loud, but my wolf just wants to go all savage and take her away from Percival. But that’s not what I really want! I’m just so mixed up.” He grumbled, frustration clear in his voice. I completely understood what he was going through.
“Hey, Nixx, listen up. You’re going to feel like this for a while. It’s going to mess with your head, especially with that wolf of yours, but don’t give in to it. Seriously, things get messy if you do. You’re stronger than me, so keep it under control. I know it hurts to think about your special ability being used by someone else, but you’ve got to push those thoughts aside.”
Nixx covered his face with his hands, nodding slowly. He then settled back down on the bed, staring at the ceiling. “How do you do it?” he asked.
I looked at him, knowing I had to trust my brother through this.
“Honestly, Nixx, I don’t really know. But the thing is, Percival isn’t interested in Tatiana. He wants me. We’ve had some good times together, and I hold onto those happy memories when I have to wait for the outcome. But I’m not just sitting around waiting for him. I’m going to live my life. If what he says is true—if Tatiana has a miscarriage—he said he’ll keep trying to win me back, no matter how long it takes. Even if I’m with someone else. That’s how I handle it, Nixx. I just think about the things he’s said. It helps me avoid feeling miserable, even if those things might not actually happen.” I pulled the locket from my shirt and placed it in his hand. He looked at it with a puzzled expression, a slight frown on his face.
“Go ahead and open it,” I encouraged, closing my eyes and eagerly waiting.
After a moment, I heard the locket snap shut. My eyes fluttered open to find Nixx’s face etched with anger. “So, when did he give this to you?”
I could tell he was fuming. “So, last night, huh?” he muttered.
His face was a mask of pure outrage. “Let me get this straight—while the pregnant wolf carrying his pup is in the hospital, he’s off having a grand old time with you? Seriously?”
I let out an exasperated sigh, rolling my eyes. “Hey, Nixx, chill. It was just a coincidence that we ended up in the same place at the same time. No big deal. I’ve only had a few conversations with him, nothing significant. That’s all there is to it.” My older, larger brother didn’t need to know anything else, anyway.
He gave a slight nod, his jaw tight with frustration.
“Hey, Nixx, could you do me a favor and talk to William? It’s important that you reach out to Tatiana’s dad and let him know about your mate status. Also, try to figure out why she’s mated to you. There’s something fishy about her story.” I hoped he got the seriousness of it. A mischievous grin spread across his face, and his eyes took on a new, determined look. He gave me a grateful nod.
“Hey, little sis, that’s actually a pretty cool idea. It’ll definitely surprise her a bit. Maybe I’ll gather some information on the situation…” Before I could say another word, he jumped out of bed and dashed to the bathroom.
The shower roared to life almost immediately. I headed back to my room, deciding to wait until he finished so I could use my own bathroom. Two showers running at once always put a strain on the hot water supply. Well, at least he wasn’t sad anymore… just for now. He was clearly determined to get to the bottom of things.
Oh, and I found some pretty cool stuff too.
Now I just need to get them addressed… by someone I’m not even allowed to see.
Percival!
