Chapter 200 A FRESH START
Edeline
I could not stick around to witness this... It would only break my heart further.
Just as the Alpha and Luna were about to turn to me with pity, I turned away and strolled quickly down the dirt road.
A deep, unexplainable pain settled in my soul. It was a sad occasion. My friend was about to have his puppy, and I felt superficial and scared. I was just by myself.
Yet, there was also a strange sense of relief. I was being let go...
As my thoughts wandered to what lay ahead and the exciting opportunities that awaited me, I felt a soothing comfort in the refreshing autumn air. My partner was about to become a father, and it was such a special moment. It was painful, yet freeing.
And I was okay with that now...
I had accepted that he was a mistake. Or she was...
Why on earth would the Moon put us through this? What was the point of giving us a mate bond only to let it fade away because of my feelings? Seriously, what was the Moon thinking?
There had to be a reason. Perhaps I was destined for something greater. Maybe this was a learning experience. Perhaps I needed this to grow.
I grinned to myself as I walked, my boots feeling heavy with each step, the leaves crunching beneath me. Sure, I was meant for something else...
This is where it all started for me, not where it ended. I was not going to dwell on these intense emotions any longer. I had mentioned it countless times before, but now I was determined. I was working on it...
Tonight marked the beginning of my fresh start, even though it pained me to leave this broken mate bond behind. I still could not get over my love for Percival...
I simply stopped caring.
I would always have love for him deep down. However, those memories of hurt and betrayal would come back to haunt me. I felt frustrated when he brushed me off, all because he wanted to keep his pup safe from harm. It was not like I was the only one who could have caused that danger. I would have been in big trouble if I had kept that dog.
I knew I was mistaken...
Well, I just could not control my emotions.
I was feeling pretty optimistic, though. I was totally okay with this. Everything would turn out fine in the end.
...
As I got closer to my house, I realized there were a few more things I needed to take care of.
A group of young wolves, both males and females, strolled past me on the dusty road. They all grinned and nodded their heads in my direction. I felt a surge of pride as my wolf puffed up. I couldn't help but raise my head a little higher as I returned their smiles.
"Hey, Edeline," a few of them greeted.
I gave a small nod as I strolled past, catching snippets of their hushed conversations trailing behind me.
“She’s stronger than Percival. The guys are getting together, preparing to take on Darius and Percival. We all believe Nixx should be our next alpha.”
“Yeah, I know. But Edeline should be our Luna... Nixx is mated to that ratchet female. She will never be our Luna. Never,” a female said.
“Yeah, I agree,” the guy in charge chimed in.
“Yeah, I noticed that too. Edeline getting marked by Percival was a clear sign she could become our Luna, but only if Percival became the Alpha. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen after all the challenges.”
“Who cares? Edeline can easily find another mate who’s worthy of her. It’s been done before. We could find an alpha of our own, someone we can truly call our leader. Alpha William’s family is simply too weak to continue leading us.”
I was taken aback by their conversation. Did they have no shame? Talking about us as if we were on the cover of a gossip magazine...
Looking for a new partner? Bringing in an Alpha from another country? Can they really turn me into a Luna? Is Nixx going to be the Alpha? Challenges?!
My heart raced as I finally reached my place. I felt a bit overwhelmed. I didn't mind if Percival got challenged; he had it coming. The group had noticed his vulnerability, but Darius didn’t deserve it...
Hurriedly dashing inside, I bounded up the stairs and left the letter I wrote for my parents on their spacious bed, face up. Then I headed over to Nixx’s room and casually placed his letter on his bed before making my exit once more. I was on my way to the pack house for my next adventure...
I could use some assistance with this one. Wrapping things up. The day was coming to an end, and I only had a couple of hours left before it was time. I told my parents I’d give them a call, even though I knew it might upset them.
As I strolled towards the Pack house at a casual pace, a sense of bewilderment washed over me when I spotted the Alpha and Luna engaged in a heated conversation in the enclosed area of the mudroom.
Why aren’t they at Doc’s? Wow, they got here in no time at all! It’s only been twenty minutes since I left Doc’s... Her puppy hadn’t been born yet. Or maybe it had been lifeless.
Whatever happened first, I had a gut feeling that the pup would pull through.
I looked down at my stomach and instinctively placed my hand on my abdomen. The chance of being pregnant kept slipping my mind. Every now and then, the thought would cross my mind, but my emotions or unexpected events would make me forget.
Right now, I needed to forget.
I slowly moved forward, making sure to stay concealed by the tall trees next to the screened-in porch. I quietly observed from the shadows, casually listening to William and Annabel as they spoke...
I overheard Annabel whispering some not-so-nice words, but I managed to catch them.
