“Can we talk privately?” the doctor said.
The moment I saw his face, tight and serious, my heart sank. Doctors don’t ask for privacy when the news is good. Whatever he was about to say, I knew it wasn’t something I would like to hear.
“Why can’t you say whatever you want to say right here?” my mother snapped. “He is our son.” My father nodded beside her, his arms folded across his chest, his eyes fixed on the doctor.
I sighed softly and forced a small smile. “Mom, Dad,” I said calmly, “as you can see, I am fine, I am not dying.”
They didn’t look convinced. “I just need a minute with the doctor,” I continued. “Please.”
They hesitated, clearly uncomfortable, but after a long moment, they finally turned and walked out of the room, though my mother glanced back more than once before closing the door behind her.
The moment they were gone, I turned back to the doctor. My chest felt tight, my palms slightly damp.
“Is there a problem?” I asked quietly.
This was my second week in the hospital after the accident. I had been here since then. The doctors said I was very lucky that my spinal cord wasn’t damaged. My arm had been broken, and there were wounds all over my body, but they were healing well. The pain was still there, but it was manageable.
Tomorrow, I was going to be discharged. “After the series of tests we carried out,” the doctor said, flipping through my file, “everything looks fine except for one thing.”
He paused. I frowned, my stomach tightening. “Except what?” I asked. “We noticed an injury to your pelvis,” he continued.
I stared at him, confused. “But I can walk,” I said quickly. “Aside from the pain from my wounds, I don’t feel anything wrong with my body. So what pelvic injury?” He sighed softly, choosing his words carefully. “Physically, you are stable,” he said. “But there is nerve damage involved.”
I nodded slowly, still not understanding. “Nerve damage where exactly?” He looked at me directly this time. “The nerves affected are connected to sexual function and ejaculation.”
My eyes widened in shock. For a moment, my mind went completely blank. Then the words hit me all at once, heavy and terrifying. What does that even mean?
I swallowed hard, my heart pounding. Does this mean I won’t be able to fuck anymore, fear crept into my chest.
“No,” he said, and I realized I had spoken out loud. “Both vas deferens has been damaged, not just blocked,” the doctor continued. “You can have sex, but the tubes that carry sperm were severely injured during the accident. You will ejaculate normally, but your semen will contain little or no sperm.”
I froze. “You are trying to say I won’t produce sperm?” I asked, shock edging into my voice.
He nodded. “Exactly. You can have sex, but you won’t be able to produce viable sperm.”
I dragged my hands over my face, my palms pressing into my eyes. I was completely finished, my parents expected our legacy to continue, and if I couldn’t father children, everything I had worked for, my sweat, my blood, my effort would automatically go to Declan.
“Is there a remedy?” I asked, my voice trembling. This was the first time in my life something shook me this much. Not even catching Rhea cheating on me, or facing the backlash after Amelia posted those pictures online, had felt like this.
The doctor exhaled slowly before answering. “I need to be honest with you,” he said. “The damage is complete. Both vas deferens were destroyed by the trauma. There is nothing to repair, nothing to reconnect.”
I felt my chest tighten. “Surgery won’t help,” he continued quietly. “There is no pathway for sperm at all. You will never be able to father biological children.”
The words settled heavily between us, my whole life ended in that moment.
After the doctor left and my parents were called back into the room, I couldn’t bring myself to tell them anything. The words refused to leave my mouth. Earlier, before he left, I had made the doctor swear to complete confidentiality. I warned him that I would be drafting a formal document, and if this information ever leaked to the media, he would lose his license and I would make sure his life became miserable.
This was not a threat I made lightly. That information could never get out. Not to the press, not to the family, not to anyone. If Declan found out, he would use it against me without hesitation, and my parents would forgive him for everything he had ever done. I couldn’t allow that to happen. So I said nothing.
When my parents finally left the hospital later that day, the silence in the room felt heavier than before.
Not long after, Alvin walked into my ward. He came with updates, everything I had missed while I was stuck in this bed.
“Sir,” Alvin said carefully, “Miss Amelia Davies has been coming here every day since the accident to check on you. She asked that I schedule an appointment with you as soon as you were awake.”
I clenched my jaw. If Amelia Davies had never come into my life years ago, Rhea and I would have had a child by now. Even if we were meant to go our separate ways, we had planned for it. We were going to hire a surrogate to carry our baby. Amelia ruined everything.
And now, I was only just beginning to ruin her life in return. She would suffer, trapped in a childless and miserable marriage for the rest of her life. That was the price she would pay.
“Fix the appointment,” I said coldly, “but let me meet my lawyer first.” Alvin nodded.
I needed to review every clause in that contract. She should have signed it long ago. Now that she hadn’t, she would pay for the hesitation because what was coming next would be far worse than anything she imagined.
