Chapter 39: It Was Never Her Intention to Make Things Difficult
"Emily, hold up a sec!"
Emily watched as Sophia walked away, gearing up to confront the person who had been lurking around. Suddenly, she heard someone calling her name, panting heavily.
Recognizing the familiar voice, Emily's expression turned icy, and she kept walking, ignoring it.
The person hurriedly stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "You heard me, why didn't you stop?"
The person stomped their foot, almost like they were throwing a tantrum.
Emily frowned, narrowing her eyes at the person, as if to say: Are you serious?
For someone who usually didn't get along with her, to act all cutesy?
"Lily, I'm sorry!"
Lily, seeing Emily's expression, blushed with embarrassment but bit her lip and mustered the courage to say it.
Emily's frown deepened, becoming more alert, "What scheme have you and Bianca cooked up this time? Pretend to be friendly and then stab me in the back?"
Lily's face froze.
She hadn't expected her attempt at making amends to be so misunderstood.
She was also someone who was pampered at home, and now, after admitting her mistake, she was being misunderstood.
Lily's expression turned colder, "I don't have the energy for that. I came to apologize for misunderstanding you about what happened to Bianca last time."
Emily crossed her arms, looking at Lily with a leisurely gaze, "I remember you were just threatening me in the office. This sudden change, shouldn't I be suspicious?"
Lily was at a loss for words.
She bit her lip and sincerely apologized, "I reviewed the photos and videos and realized I misunderstood you. It was my mistake, so I'm apologizing. But that doesn't mean you weren't wrong for bullying Bianca before. Bianca is very kind; if you just got along with her, you could be the best of friends."
Emily had always seen Lily as Bianca's most loyal follower and disliked her because she disliked Bianca.
She didn't expect Lily to have some sincerity.
It seemed like she was just another fool duped by Bianca.
"I accept your apology. But remember, it's never been me making things difficult for her. This won't work on me."
With that, Emily walked past Lily and left.
"…What does that mean?"
Lily was momentarily confused.
She reached out, wanting to call Emily back for an explanation.
"Lily, why did you run off alone? Who were you talking to?" Bianca, realizing something was off, hurried after Lily. She had a bad feeling and quickly followed her.
But she only saw Lily standing there, staring into the distance.
The retreating figure seemed to be Emily.
She quickly approached and grabbed Lily, asking, "I just found out I misunderstood Emily, so I thought I should apologize and persuade her to get along with you."
Lily didn't hide anything and replied honestly.
Bianca's heart sank.
Lily, who had always disliked Emily, was now changing her mind over this one incident. This couldn't be happening.
Bianca's eyes reddened with guilt, "It's my fault for being unwell lately and not knowing what was happening online. By the time I found out and wanted to explain, it was too late. Emily probably thinks I did it, so she dislikes me even more."
Lily thought for a moment but didn't follow Bianca's lead. Instead, she tried to comfort her, "Don't be upset. Maybe Emily didn't think that way. She doesn't seem like a petty person. Perhaps we misunderstood her. When I apologized, she accepted it graciously."
Also, when I suggested she get along with you, guess what she said? She said, 'It's never been me making things difficult for her. You should be telling her that.'"
"What does that mean? Are you saying I'm the one making things difficult for her?"
Bianca's expression turned cold, and she couldn't help but blurt out.
She was always seen as gentle and kind.
This cold and hostile demeanor was something Lily had never seen before.
"I-I didn't mean that. Bianca, I just thought, maybe you're too sensitive and misunderstood her hostility."
Lily was so scared that she stammered and instinctively distanced herself from Bianca.
Bianca had been having a tough day, something she had never experienced before.
She wasn't naturally a patient person, so she couldn't help but reveal her true emotions.
"Sorry, I was just afraid you'd think I'm a bad person. You know you're my most important friend, and I'm scared of losing you, so I got a bit emotional."
Bianca quickly explained.
Lily, being a childhood friend, immediately believed her.
She was deeply touched, seeing Bianca on the verge of tears, she hugged her and patted her back to comfort her, "I know, I just want you two to get along. You don't need to get upset and fall ill every time."
"Thank you for understanding, Lily!" Bianca hugged her back, her voice choked with emotion.
But her eyes, hidden from Lily, were cold enough to send chills down one's spine.
Emily was becoming harder to deal with.
What had happened to her recently?
Bianca thought of Daniel, whom Emily had called. No matter what, she had to go see him.
She hid her true intentions, letting go of Lily.
Then she said, "Lily, wait for me here. I'll go say a few words to Emily, let her know I really want to get along."
"Okay, I'll wait for you!" Lily agreed without much thought.
Bianca let go of Lily and quickly went after Emily.
Emily was almost at the hiding spot when her phone rang.
"Mr. Smith, are you here?"
"I'm here, by the roadside at the school gate."
Daniel had seen Emily and thought she hadn't noticed his car, so he called to remind her.
As he spoke, he signaled the driver.
The driver understood and rolled down the window.
Emily, hearing the call, turned to look at the roadside.
She saw a Maybach with its hazard lights on, signaling her.
The window rolled down.
Emily and Daniel, inside the car, locked eyes from a distance.
His gaze was deep and mysterious, as if it could pull her in completely.
Daniel!
Mysterious and intimidating.
Emily thought of the danger lurking nearby.
Daniel meant well, and she didn't want to drag him into the danger.
She stepped forward but didn't open the car door. Instead, she leaned on the window and looked at Daniel inside.
Her face, hidden in the shadows, added to the mystery.
"Mr. Smith, I'm sorry, something came up, and I might be late. Could you give me an address, and I'll get there later?"
Emily apologized.
Daniel's face, hidden in the shadows, was unreadable.
"Alright."
After a long pause.
Just when Emily thought he might be angry at her for standing him up, he gave a concise reply.
Emily let out a sigh of relief.
"See you later, Mr. Smith!"
She waved and stepped back, turning to walk away.
At that moment, Bianca had caught up.
She was about to call out to Emily but saw her talking to someone in the Maybach and then turning to leave.
As Emily stepped aside, the window rolled up, and Bianca caught a glimpse of the cold, distant face inside.
Bianca's pupils contracted, and her eyes widened.
How could it be him?
