Chapter 87

Chapter 87

Even if she lived again, Evelyn was still a girl in her twenties. Talking about this kind of thing with Hannah still made her feel a bit awkward.

Her face flushed as she called out softly, "Mom!"

This response, tinged with shyness and unease, made Hannah laugh.

Hannah gently patted the back of Evelyn's hand, her eyes showing more peace of mind.

"We don't have any other thoughts; we just hope you'll live a stable and peaceful life."

"We can see how good Benjamin is to you."

"Your dad was so angry just now, don't be upset with him. When Benjamin opened his mouth with threats, how could he feel at ease?"

Evelyn instinctively defended Benjamin.

"Mom, he didn't mean it."

"It was an accident. He thought you really were going to take me away. He panicked for a moment; that's why he spoke without thinking."

Not only was Hannah not displeased, but her smile deepened.

"You were just refusing to marry him, and now you're defending him like this. Tell me the truth, what are you really thinking?"

She definitely couldn't tell the truth.

If she said she had died once and was killed by Sophia and Matthew, Hannah would probably call a doctor for her immediately.

Would Benjamin believe her if she told him?

Forget it. This kind of thing was too surreal. If she said it, people might not believe her, and it could cause unnecessary panic instead.

She leaned against Hannah's shoulder.

This position made them intimate while also hiding the expression on her face.

"Mom, I really do care about him now, and I want to be with him for the rest of my life."

"Before, I was immature, that's why I insisted on breaking off the engagement."

"When you go back, please talk to Dad too, and don't bring up this kind of thing again, okay?"

After saying this, she added, "He doesn't have much sense of security. When he heard you were going to take me away, he completely lost his composure."

Her words were all explanations for Benjamin. How could Hannah not see that Evelyn's attitude had changed?

All of Hannah's worries vanished at this moment.

The atmosphere at lunch was no longer as tense as it had been in the morning. Benjamin and Timothy weren't exactly chatting and laughing, but they were polite to each other.

Until Timothy and Hannah left, they never mentioned taking Evelyn away again.

She breathed a slight sigh of relief, though the tension in her heart didn't completely ease.

After seeing them off, she immediately pulled Benjamin into the study.

Everything inside was as expected - clearly, the imagined scene of him smashing things in anger hadn't happened.

There was still an unfinished chess game on the desk. Everything seemed normal.

Benjamin watched her enter the study and look around, the corners of his lips curving up. "What are you looking for?"

As he spoke, he extended his long arm and pulled her into his embrace, bending down to rest his head on her shoulder, breathing in her pleasant scent.

Evelyn pushed him symbolically. When she couldn't push him away, she just let him be.

But her little head kept moving, her eyes scanning back and forth.

"What did my dad say to you?"

Without giving him a chance to speak, she continued talking.

"He's just worried about me; he didn't mean to give you a hard time."

"You're the younger generation, don't be so hot-tempered."

"If you're angry, tell me, don't talk to my dad like that, okay?"

By the end, she was completely coaxing him, her small hand gently patting his back.

"I know you felt wronged today. I'll make you something delicious for dinner tonight, okay?"

Remembering the last time when something went wrong at the company, and Evelyn had cooked dinner for him, but he didn't come home, his heart melted completely, and he even felt a bit guilty.

His large hand ruffled her hair.

"You don't need to do these things. You just need to be happy every day, that's enough."

Although this was a common line men used to coax women, Benjamin really could back it up, and he was sincere with her.

Evelyn's heart felt warm, and the affection in her eyes became even more obvious.

"I want to make you happy, too. So are you still angry?"

He didn't answer, but instead lowered his head and captured Evelyn's tempting red lips.

In the end, Evelyn never asked Benjamin how long he had stood in the entrance hall or how much of the conversation he had heard.

Some things couldn't be explained with words. She could only show him through her actions that she really didn't want to break off the engagement anymore.

To accompany Timothy and Hannah, Benjamin had specifically postponed his work for the day.

So in the afternoon, Evelyn and Benjamin had nothing to do, and they simply stayed in the room watching movies.

Curiosity drove Evelyn to watch a horror film, though she didn't have the guts for it.

Now with Benjamin accompanying her, she certainly wouldn't pass up this opportunity. Benjamin was indifferent to these things, but he really enjoyed the feeling of her throwing herself into his arms.

Whenever the lighting in the movie changed, and the music played, she would shrink into his embrace, wishing she could embed herself completely in his arms.

Half her face was pressed against his chest, only her eyes wide open, staring at the screen.

As if the ghosts crawling around in there could drill out of the TV, her whole body was tense.

He patted her back soothingly, but it made her shudder and turn back to glare at him unhappily.

"Why are you patting me at such a tense moment? Scaring people can scare them to death, you know!"

Scary?

He hadn't noticed.

Those deliberately mysterious things couldn't arouse the slightest interest in Benjamin's eyes. Instead, the vivid expressions on Evelyn's face in his arms were much more attractive to him.

He smiled and held her petite body tighter, soothing her in a low voice.

"My mistake. Keep watching."

She huffed in dissatisfaction, told him not to move around, and nervously went back to watching the movie.

Just as the film was building to a climax, Benjamin's phone suddenly vibrated, startling Evelyn in his arms.

After recovering, she stared at the phone in Benjamin's hand, her eyes full of resentment.

He was both helpless and affectionate, but when he noticed her gaze fixed on his phone screen, he looked too.

The phone screen showed "Celeste."

Seeing the caller, Evelyn was clearly not pleased, but she still picked up the remote and pressed pause to let him take the call.

As he pressed the answer button, he put it on speaker.

"Mr. White! Ms. Harris is in trouble; she's been detained."

It wasn't Celeste's voice, but a younger woman's. Her voice was full of panic, as if she were extremely frightened.

Compared to her panic, Benjamin's voice was calm and measured.

"What happened?"

"I'm not sure. Ms. Harris was discussing raw material supply with a business partner, and everything was settled. Suddenly, some people came and said they wanted Ms. Harris to drink a few glasses with them before they'd sign the contract..."

"Who are these people?"

"I'm not sure, I only know everyone calls him Mr. Martinez."

Did the Martinez family people still dare to cause trouble?

Benjamin hung up the phone and looked down at Evelyn in his arms. "Evelyn, I have to go out now. Stay home and be good."

Celeste again.

Evelyn felt strongly that she and Celeste were jinxed.

Every time she and Benjamin were on a date, Celeste had to pop up and cause some trouble.

"I'm going too." She reached out to hug his waist, speaking matter-of-factly. "If you're going to save another woman, I'm coming with you."
