Chapter 76
"Ms. Thomas."
Chase came out of the office and saw Evelyn standing at the door, looking a bit dazed.
He paused for a moment, then immediately said with a smile, "You're here to see Mr. White, right? He's almost done with his morning work and can have lunch with you."
Chase's polite manner was no different from usual.
If Benjamin were really having an affair with some woman, Chase would definitely know. So how could Chase stay so calm when he suddenly saw her?
Besides, didn't she know Benjamin's character well enough?
Evelyn felt she was being paranoid, and the smile on her face became especially sweet.
"Get me a glass of water."
"Sure, Ms. Thomas."
She pushed the door open and walked in, immediately spotting Benjamin sitting behind his desk.
Benjamin's head was slightly lowered, so she couldn't see his whole face clearly, but his sharp features were enough to show how handsome he was.
Just looking at Benjamin made her heart fill with joy.
This handsome, capable man was her boyfriend - thinking about it made her quite proud.
She couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Benjamin's hand paused. He looked up and saw Evelyn standing at the door with a big smile on her face.
"What's making you so happy?"
A smile appeared on his face too, with a warmth in his eyes that others rarely got to see.
She toned down her expression a bit, put her hands behind her back, and walked toward him with an examining look.
"What, I can't be happy? Or are you hiding something from me?"
"How could that be?" He chuckled and lowered his head to look at the computer screen again. "I just have a bit more work to finish. Wait a moment."
Evelyn wasn't an unreasonable person. She knew work was important.
Besides, men looked even more attractive when they were focused on work.
She agreed and sat down on the sofa, waiting for Benjamin to finish his work.
Soon, Chase brought in a glass of water.
After quietly saying thanks, Evelyn was about to pick it up and drink, but when she looked at the cup, her eyes narrowed slightly.
It wasn't a disposable cup, nor was it the regular style commonly used in offices.
It was a blue-green cup, clearly one piece from a matching set.
She could understand Benjamin using a complete set of cups to serve guests.
But if he went to the trouble of preparing a set of cups for guests, why wouldn't he arrange a special cup just for her? Unless this whole set was prepared for her?
Evelyn was confident but not conceited. She didn't come here that often.
Evelyn tilted her head slightly, her tongue pressing against the inside of her cheek.
The cup by Benjamin's hand wasn't his usual glass either, but one similar in color to hers - clearly from the same set as the cup she was holding.
She got up and walked over, glanced at the cup by Benjamin's hand, then at the coffee pot nearby. She picked it up and sniffed it.
Herbal coffee.
Benjamin usually drank coffee, but he had no interest in herbal coffee.
Seeing her pour coffee, he seemed to ask casually, "Suddenly want coffee?"
"If Mr. White can suddenly drink herbal coffee, why can't I try some?" Her voice was calm, and her pretty face showed no unusual expression.
Chase wouldn't have the leisure to put this kind of thought into Benjamin's coffee.
And this kind of thoughtfulness - not disrupting Benjamin's preferences while adding a little creative touch - seemed more like a woman's doing.
She opened the lid and smiled.
"Chase has this kind of idea?"
"Not sure, maybe he just had a sudden inspiration."
Benjamin was used to drinking coffee and could make it himself, but his standards at the company were much lower.
Though recently, the coffee at the company did taste pretty good.
Evelyn looked at his unchanged expression and suddenly smiled. "This coffee is quite good. Since Chase knows this area, why don't you have him teach me?"
A flash of something unusual crossed Benjamin's eyes.
Clearly, he also sensed something was off, but he just glanced at the coffee pot in her hand and pressed the intercom button.
Soon, Chase walked in. "Mr. White."
"I'm the one looking for you."
Evelyn held the coffee pot, watching for changes in Chase's expression. "You know about coffee?"
"Coffee?" Chase was stunned for a moment, then immediately shook his head. "I don't know anything about coffee."
As he spoke, Chase very discreetly glanced at Benjamin.
"Didn't you make this coffee?"
"Coffee?" Chase looked at the coffee pot in Evelyn's hand, then belatedly began to explain. "It's the new intern in the executive office. She knows about coffee, so now she makes Mr. White's coffee. Also, she specially prepared a set of cups - they look pretty nice."
An intern?
Evelyn looked at Chase, who hadn't noticed the problem at all and was still praising the intern.
Her gaze turned to Benjamin. He had already put down his work.
"Call her in."
Chase, looking like he expected to be praised, went out to get her. Evelyn couldn't help but think critically.
Chase couldn't even read the room - how had he stayed by Benjamin's side for so many years?
On this point, Evelyn was wronging Chase.
Chase had a very clear grasp of Benjamin's emotional changes.
It was just that when Evelyn was around Benjamin, Chase's judgment always seemed to fail.
Right now, Chase just thought the intern had caught Evelyn's interest.
Soon, the intern walked in.
Very young, clearly not long out of college.
With her credentials, being able to enter the executive office meant she must have graduated from a prestigious school with an impressive resume.
And she came in just to serve tea and water?
Evelyn examined the intern, whose looks weren't particularly stunning but who had a fresh, pleasant appearance. She felt she looked familiar.
Her gaze fell on the intern's name tag: Violet Bailey.
She suddenly remembered where she'd seen Violet before.
The Bailey family wasn't well-known in Emerald City. Violet was known as a good girl, so naturally, she wouldn't fit in with Evelyn, who had a somewhat arrogant and domineering reputation.
But Violet and Evelyn were about the same age and from the same social circle, so they'd naturally met before.
It was just that Evelyn wasn't familiar with Violet and didn't recognize her at first glance.
Someone with Violet's background came to work as an intern at The White Group Branch?
The corners of Evelyn's lips curved up. "You really like making coffee?"
Violet was clearly nervous, her fingers clutching at her clothes. "I know a bit about it."
"In that case, why don't you become a barista? I'll open a coffee shop for you."
"Ms. Thomas..."
"The Bailey family's business isn't small. Ms. Bailey doesn't need to lower herself to be an intern. Or is the Bailey family going bankrupt, so you need to work?"
Violet had been pampered growing up, and with the Bailey family being insulted, her temper flared up.
"The White Group had open recruitment. I have the qualifications. What gives you the right to say that, Ms. Thomas?"
Violet glanced at Benjamin, who hadn't said anything, then, thinking of the friction between them, she bit out, "If you wanted to get in, you'd probably have to use connections."
Evelyn laughed in anger.
But she'd always enjoyed rubbing salt in other people's wounds.
"I can use connections to get into this company. Do you have connections you can use? Not only that, but you probably can't even keep this job."
She turned to look at Benjamin. "Can I use your connections?"
