Chapter 50
Evelyn and Benjamin had been engaged for several years, and news of their wedding had even spread.
But due to the complications in their relationship, plus Preston's sudden incident, the wedding date had never been set.
Let alone preparing for the wedding.
Bringing this up now seemed casual, yet carried a deeper meaning.
"Okay."
Evelyn nodded with a smile without any hesitation: "But a wedding dress is once in a lifetime, I'm very picky, so you can't just brush me off."
"I won't."
Benjamin's voice was a bit hoarse, with surging emotions rolling in the depths of his eyes.
Ballet tutus were pretty much the same; the key was sizing. Evelyn just glanced at it casually and had someone wrap it up.
When they went upstairs and saw the dazzling array of wedding dresses, their eyes were almost overwhelmed.
"After so many years in design, I've never really paid attention to wedding dresses. I don't know which style suits me."
Cleo had just made a mistake and now really wanted to prove herself, so she immediately said with a smile.
"Ms. Thomas is beautiful with a great figure; you can pull off any style. So just pick whatever you like."
"What about you? What do you think?" Evelyn turned her head to look at Benjamin beside her.
His fingers gently lifted her long hair: "You have a beautiful neck; you could wear a strapless dress."
People working in this kind of store were all smart. Cleo immediately brought out minimalist strapless wedding dresses.
"These are all newly arrived wedding dresses. Ms. Thomas, if you like any, just try them on."
Amid all the compliments, Evelyn picked a wedding dress and went in to try it on.
Benjamin sat on the sofa outside, noble and elegant, attracting countless gazes.
"Ms. Thomas is so enviable, such a good family background, and such an enviable fiancé."
"I heard Mr. White is a young master of the White family; he has connections in both the Underworld and Authorities, with power reaching the sky."
"Ms. Thomas is a rich girl before marriage, and will be a CEO's wife after marriage. She'll never suffer in her life."
"Not necessarily. Matthew, the adopted son of the Thomas family, has a very ambiguous relationship with them. They say the person she really loves is Matthew."
"What? Matthew could be better than Benjamin?"
"Who can say for sure about matters of the heart?"
The gossip flew around, while Benjamin sat there, his face showing no emotion.
Until the curtain of the fitting room was pulled.
Benjamin instinctively looked up.
Evelyn appeared before him in a wedding dress.
Evelyn was beautiful. She had a great figure, and she looked even more beautiful in the wedding dress.
The strapless dress revealed her beautiful shoulders and neck. Her long hair was casually pinned up, exposing her swan-like neck.
He just looked at her calmly like that, but in his mind flashed images of her completely naked that night.
"What? Doesn't it suit me?"
Seeing him silent, Evelyn frowned slightly, feeling uneasy.
Did this wedding dress not match her?
Surely it couldn't be that she wasn't worthy of this wedding dress?
"It looks great." Benjamin stood up, his voice carrying a bit of hoarseness, his eyes deepening.
Perfunctory.
That was Evelyn's first impression.
She pouted with some dissatisfaction: "If it doesn't look good, just say so. What kind of attitude is that?"
"It really does look good." He stood up and walked toward her.
His presence was too strong. Cleo, who had been standing beside Evelyn, immediately stepped aside.
Benjamin's hand fell on her shoulder, turning her toward the full-length mirror.
Petite Evelyn in her white wedding dress, standing together with tall Benjamin, looked very well-matched.
So beautiful, yet in her previous life, she had ended up as a plaything in the red-light district.
Hadn't she been good enough to Matthew and Sophia? How could they have been so cruel to her?
Evelyn, whose eyes had been smiling, now showed a desolate emotion in her gaze, even with a hint of self-mockery.
"We're just looking, not deciding on anything, right?" A light voice came by her ear.
Evelyn suddenly looked up. Though she didn't see his expression, her heart jumped.
"Do you think this wedding dress isn't pretty enough?"
Benjamin released his hand from her shoulder: "A casually chosen wedding dress ultimately isn't worthy of your status. We can find a specialized designer to custom-make one for you."
He was accommodating her.
She suddenly turned to look at him: "You're right. Since I'm getting married, everything should be the best. My wedding dress must have style too. I want to design it myself, how about that?"
As she spoke, she was already walking toward the fitting room: "I want a one-of-a-kind wedding dress."
Cleo didn't quite understand what they meant and instinctively asked, "Ms. Thomas, our store also has designers we work with who can design a wedding dress for you."
"No need," she didn't look back, "I want the most special one."
After changing back into her original clothes, Evelyn handed the gift box with the tutu to Benjamin: "Carry this."
In the car.
Benjamin started the engine: "Where do you want to go?"
"Are you really that free?" She didn't answer but asked instead, looking at him thoughtfully, "You're not going to the company or discussing projects? Isn't it said that those who can sit at the top of the financial news are all there because they spent time working their way up?"
He glanced at her: "The person sitting in that position now is my dad."
Benjamin paused, then added: "Do you want me to replace him?"
She suddenly felt like she was instigating a power struggle between father and son.
"No, I just think you're quite free. So what are your plans next?"
"It's almost noon, shall we have lunch together? Then I'll go back to The White Group Branch."
Benjamin still had to go to work.
"Then I'll go to the Thomas Group too."
The demolition issue needed to be pushed forward, and the matter of dealing with the Brown family couldn't be put on hold either.
As Evelyn was thinking, Freya's face flashed through her mind, and she couldn't help but ask a question she had never thought about before.
"Benjamin, have you ever had a first love? You know, that kind of teenage crush that you keep in your heart forever."
After she finished speaking, the air in the car instantly became quiet.
She also realized what she had said.
When she turned her head to look at him, she found his profile somewhat tense, his thin lips pressed into a straight line.
His gaze, looking ahead, carried a sharp meaning.
Just as she opened her mouth to say something, he curved his lips, his voice carrying obvious coldness: "Are you trying to say your first love is Matthew?"
Benjamin knew he shouldn't be this sensitive.
But when he heard that question, his emotions still tensed up instantly.
The veins on Benjamin's hand gripping the steering wheel bulged, his fingers turning white from the pressure, his deep eyes accumulating layers of turbulent emotions, as if they would explode at any moment.
Until—
"I don't want to mention him at all. I want to know if you've ever liked anyone else."
"They say a man's first love stays with him for life, and no one can replace her."
Evelyn's soft words released most of his hostility.
When he spoke again, his tone had returned to normal.
"You are my first love."
"Then what do you like about me?" Evelyn was genuinely curious.
Benjamin was a young master of the White family; he could have any woman he wanted, yet he was devoted to her.
And in her previous life, she had been such a fool, hurting him so many times for that scumbag.
She really felt it wasn't worth it for him.
Benjamin didn't speak for a while. Just when she thought he wouldn't answer, his calm voice sounded.
"Love comes without reason."
And runs deep.
