Chapter 44
Evelyn didn't hide her emotions - her expression darkened immediately.
Her red lips pressed together. She didn't say a word, but her displeasure was written all over her face.
"What are you looking for me for at this time?"
Benjamin looked down at her and directly changed the subject, as if the matter about Louis was already over.
Not only was Evelyn still fuming, and didn't want to deal with him.
Freya, who had specifically come here to play the victim, also wouldn't allow things to just be brushed aside like this.
"You don't need to have Chase follow me..."
Her voice was very soft, always giving people the feeling that she might not be able to get out the next sentence at any moment.
"Benjamin, you have so many things going on. It would be better to have Chase stay with you."
As she spoke, she quickly glanced at Evelyn, her eyes full of panic and unease.
"I'm just an ordinary student. No one would specifically target me."
"Is that so?" Evelyn curved her lips slightly. "Your social life is so simple - looks like the person you find most annoying is me."
Freya's tears immediately fell.
"Ms. Thomas, don't be like this. Benjamin and I, our relationship isn't what you think."
"Then what is it?" Evelyn smiled casually.
But this time, Freya didn't answer. She just kept wiping her tears, seeming utterly at a loss.
Freya looked like she'd been bullied badly and didn't know what to do.
There was also a kind of hidden, tacit acknowledgment in the air.
Evelyn suddenly felt suffocated.
She had thought that after clearing things up with Benjamin yesterday, their relationship could move forward.
But now, looking at Freya's nauseating face, and with Benjamin showing no intention of clarifying things for her, she didn't want to stay here at all.
She let out a light snort, ignored everyone, and turned to walk toward her car.
"Benjamin!" Seeing Benjamin about to follow, Freya immediately called out to stop him. "Does Ms. Thomas not like me? Shouldn't I have come?"
"Since you know she doesn't like you, stay away from her."
Benjamin's voice wasn't loud, and couldn't be called harsh, but it instantly made one's blood run cold.
Freya's face immediately turned deathly pale, as if she hadn't expected Benjamin to say such a thing.
Her big eyes were full of shock, her lips trembling pitifully.
But Evelyn's mood improved. She stopped and turned her head to look.
However, she didn't look at Freya, but fixed her gaze on Benjamin instead.
He seemed to sense it and turned to look at Evelyn, though his words were directed at Freya.
"If you have any problems in the future, talk to Chase. He'll help you handle them."
Benjamin dropped this line, then naturally put his arm around Evelyn's shoulder and walked toward her car.
He lowered his head and said something. Evelyn laughed coquettishly, her eyes sparkling.
Freya's body swayed, and she wanted to chase after them, but was stopped by Chase, who had been watching closely.
"Ms. Stewart, I'll take you back to school."
Couldn't Freya see that Benjamin only had eyes for one woman?
Chase grumbled internally, though his face still wore a friendly smile. "As for Louis's matter, I'll handle it properly and make sure he won't affect you again."
Meanwhile.
"Aren't you afraid of hurting Freya's feelings by saying that?"
Evelyn casually handed the car keys to Benjamin and sat in the passenger seat herself.
Benjamin smoothly started the car, his tone calm and steady.
"I promised Soren I'd take care of her for life, and I'll make sure she has food and shelter."
The premise being that Freya doesn't cause trouble.
As the young master of the White family who also moved in underworld circles, his grasp of human nature was far more precise than ordinary people.
How could he not see Freya's feelings for him?
It's just that she was his savior's sister after all, and the requests she made were all harmless enough, so naturally, he couldn't refuse her.
But if it involved Evelyn, that was absolutely not allowed.
"Is that so?"
Evelyn's tone was a bit sarcastic. "So is Mr. White warning me that minor squabbles are fine, but I can't leave her crippled or disabled?"
Benjamin looked at her with some amusement, but the affection in his eyes couldn't be hidden.
"I know you didn't do it."
The dissatisfaction in her heart faded a bit, but the next second, she started complaining again. "Why didn't you say so just now!"
Not clarifying for her in front of Freya, then saying it here - was he trying to please both sides?
He controlled the steering wheel with one hand and grasped her clenched fist with his right hand, speaking gently.
"Does what she thinks matter?"
Of course, it doesn't matter, but being protected feels good.
Why does his protection of her keep cutting in and out?
Evelyn pressed her lips together and unhappily pulled her hand away, her tone a bit fierce.
"Just drive properly!"
"I want to eat barbecue for lunch today."
He agreed, completely unfazed by her temper.
At the restaurant, he served her attentively.
But she still had a hidden thought - why did he let Louis out?
Just as she was about to ask, her phone rang.
It was Hannah calling.
"Mom." Evelyn had been raised with love and affection, and when talking to her parents, she unconsciously adopted a spoiled tone.
"Come home early tonight. Matthew's been discharged from the hospital. The family should have a reunion dinner together. We just don't know when your grandfather will wake up."
The chat records could only prove that Matthew and Sophia were having an affair and that Sophia was behind the plot against Evelyn.
He'd been with the Thomas family for so many years - Hannah and Timothy both treated him like their own son. How could they easily kick him out?
If she couldn't find concrete evidence, she'd probably have to wait until Preston woke up.
She didn't refuse, chatted casually for a bit more, then turned her gaze to the man who was grilling mushrooms for her.
He looked up at her, silently asking what was wrong.
"I wanted to ask if Mr. White has time tonight. I'd like to invite you to dinner."
Benjamin chuckled softly and transferred the grilled meat to her plate. "When you need me, I always have time."
"It's a Thomas family gathering. Matthew will be there, too."
His hand paused while grilling meat, then resumed as normal. "After dinner, come with me to buy some things."
When going to his future wife's home, he should bring some gifts.
At five o'clock in the evening, Benjamin drove Evelyn back to the Thomas Villa.
Entering the living room, they saw Matthew chatting with Timothy and Hannah. The atmosphere was quite harmonious.
When they saw Benjamin, everyone's eyes showed subtle emotional changes.
Matthew was the first to frown, his tone far from polite, carrying a questioning edge.
"What are you doing here?"
Benjamin set down the gifts he was carrying and nodded to Timothy and Hannah in greeting.
"Hannah, Timothy, and Evelyn said we're having a family reunion dinner."
With Benjamin and Evelyn appearing together for a reunion dinner, anyone could tell their relationship was serious.
Timothy and Hannah exchanged glances, both showing some surprise.
Matthew spoke bluntly. "Reunion dinner? What Mr. White did last night and today doesn't seem like you want the Thomas family to have a reunion dinner."
"Last night you were busy and didn't have time to pick up Evelyn - fine."
"But why did you let Louis out?"
"Aren't you afraid Evelyn might be hurt again?"
