Sophia carefully peeled chocolate liqueurs for the kids.
Watching them gobble it down, mouths full, she smiled with satisfaction.
Eat up. Get cavities. Turn into useless slobs.
Ella’s already dead. She’ll get Benjamin back.
She’ll have a baby that’s truly hers.
Those two little brats? A thorn in her side. She’ll deal with them eventually.
But not now. The priority was confirming that Ella was completely gone.
Rushing to her bedroom, she checked her messages. It failed.
She dialed frantically. No connection.
How? Was Ella… not dead?
Panic surged. She snatched the maid’s phone and secretly called the “kidnappers.” This time, it connected.
“What the hell? Why’d you block me? We had a deal-money for silence. Job done or not?”
The person on the other end paused, then said, shamelessly,
“You said it yourself: money for silence. She offered ten times the amount, so of course I let her go.”
“How dare you-”
“How dare I not? Go ahead, call the cops. Dare it. You’re shady too. We made enough on this score. I’m out. This number’s getting trashed. Don’t think you’ll ever find us again.”
Click. The call disconnected. Redial? No connection.
Sophia trembled, anxiety at a breaking point.
She slipped into the study, hoping Benjamin hadn’t noticed anything.
He was on the phone.
“Ellie’s not home? Whatever. That guy at the club and the kidnapper from that day… check what really happened.”
Benjamin felt irritation flare.
Logic told him: she’d run off again? Self-indulgent, out of line. She deserved the cold shoulder, maybe another lesson.
Yet deep down, a voice told him he worried about me.
That night at the club, when things spiraled and desire overwhelmed him, I was the only one he thought of.
He’d grown used to me. The more time we spent together, the clearer it became-I wasn’t like others. I was just… me.
Sophia? Just a lingering regret. Nothing romantic.
Benjamin pressed his fingers to his temples.
Maybe he hadn’t given me enough security. Okay. He’d be careful from now on.
If I wanted, he and Sophia could keep their distance.
Lost in thought, a jolt of alarm hit him.
He hated losing control. When did he start compromising like this?
Why could I make him bend the rules so easily?
Love. That realization hit like lightning, cleaving through the chaos in his mind.
He understood his heart.
He didn’t want a cold war. Didn’t want to wait. He just wanted to see me. Now.

To tell me from now on, no more worries, no more games.
Because he loved me. Only me.
Benjamin stood, spotting Sophia at the door.
“What are you doing here?”
“Are you going to see Ms. Thompson? Please don’t go,” Sophia whispered, voice trembling.
If he brought me back, everything would be revealed.
Benjamin frowned. “Ellie is my wife.”
Wife?
Sophia suddenly remembered the divorce decree.
She dashed off to grab it, checking the serial number and seal.
“No! She’s not! You’re divorced!”
