Chapter 14: Laura Also Came
Linda introduced the guy next to her to Mary, "This is Matthew's dad."
Richard Montagu gave Mary a quick look, radiating authority.
Mary nervously said, "Mr. Montagu."
Richard's face stayed the same as he gave a slight nod, then led Linda into the living room first.
Mary took a deep breath and followed them in.
She could totally feel that Richard and Linda weren't fans of hers.
Actually, to be exact, no one in the Montagu family, except for Victoria, liked her.
So, was this the real reason Matthew agreed to have her come over for dinner?
To make her see just how unwelcome she was?
As soon as she stepped into the living room, Mary heard a cheerful dance tune, which stopped shortly after. Victoria called out with a smile, "Mary! You're here!"
Seeing Victoria, Mary gave her first real smile of the night. "Grandma."
"Mary! I've been waiting for you forever. Come here, sit next to me." Victoria smiled and came over to pull Mary along.
Mary found it a bit odd and said, "Grandma, didn't Matthew go to pick you up? How come you're already home, where's Matthew?"
Hearing her words, Linda and Richard instinctively exchanged a glance.
Victoria looked puzzled. "Matthew didn't come to pick me up. I came back this morning."
Mary's face froze for a moment.
Victoria had come back earlier, so why did Michael say Matthew went to pick her up?
The next second, as if to confirm her suspicion, Matthew's deep, pleasant voice came from the doorway.
"Grandma, I'm back."
When Mary looked up, she saw Matthew standing at the entrance in a dark, custom-made suit, tall and handsome.
And standing next to him was Laura!
Mary lowered her head, finding it laughable.
He ended up breaking his promise to pick up Laura!
She came to the Montagu Mansion for dinner as "Mrs. Montagu", and he deliberately brought Laura, who grew up with him, to upset her!
Matthew was truly ruthless!
But clearly, she had already agreed to the divorce, so why did he still use such a method to repeatedly hurt her heart?
No one noticed Mary's disappointment.
Linda even smiled and went forward to link arms with Laura.
"Laura, it's been so long since you came over for dinner. It's perfect for us to gather tonight."
With that, she instructed the servants to serve the dishes.
Victoria took Mary's hand and said to her, "Come on, Mary, let's grab some food! If there's anything you like, be sure to tell me, so I can make it for you next time!"
Mary forced a smile. "Thank you, Grandma, I'm not picky."
Soon, everyone was seated.
Linda originally intended to seat Matthew and Laura together, but Victoria quickly intervened, seating Mary and Matthew together instead.
"The married couple should sit together," she said with a smile.
Mary instinctively glanced at Matthew, only to see his tense jawline.
Was he annoyed because he couldn't sit with Laura?
Mary's lips curled into a mocking smile.
At that moment, a piece of vegetable was placed in her bowl.
Looking up, she found that it was Linda who had served her!
Mary was momentarily flattered. "Thank you, Mrs. Montagu..."
Before she could finish, Linda smiled and placed a piece of fish in Laura's bowl.
"Laura, these are your favorite dishes, right? Try this fish, it's incredibly fresh. It was caught overseas and took less than four hours to get from the ocean to our table."
Mary suddenly found the vegetable in her mouth tasteless.
Although Linda didn't say anything, her actions were more hurtful than the most venomous words.
One was a common vegetable, the other a precious fresh fish.
Wasn't this just a way to mock her for being cheap and unworthy of attention?
